DESCRIPTION HP Advanced Solutions provides the delivery and support of the BC Government s hosting infrastructure. The provision of infrastructure services includes maintaining and enhancing the stability of the IT hosting infrastructure, including; database services; shared middleware application services and support. The Application Enabling Services team is responsible for the management and operations of the shared infrastructure platform services. The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for planning and managing the database management services for a number of clients within multiple environments. The Database Administrator (DBA) position within HP Advanced Solutions is responsible for providing expert technical support in the development and implementation of client databases and infrastructure supporting the databases, ensuring interoperability with all related infrastructure components, adherence to standards, effectiveness and relevance to company and client programs. The DBA will follow IT industry developments, research program requirements, liaise with company Architects, Planners and Client Service Representatives, and clients as well as promoting the implementation and operations of the client database infrastructure. 1 P a g e
ACCOUNTABILITIES/DELIVERABLES 1. Provisions of Technical Expertise: Analyses business availability and performance requirements and develops, recommends, and implements operational policies and procedures, migration strategies, and procedures for individual environments; Advises and participates in the development of physical database design standards; Reviews and/or prepares technical project plans; assesses impacts and risks both initial and postimplementation; identifies and coordinates changes to database management systems; leads the resolution of issues; liaises with other clients to facilitate the resolution of infrastructure issues; Provides expert advice on standards and policies for database development; Advises on appropriate hardware and operating systems for specific application requirements; Evaluates new technologies; Designs physical data model; designs and develops database security model; designs and develops data loading procedures; develops logical data models; develops/implements data conversion and loading procedures; Ensures continuous 24x7 availability, reliability, and optimal performance of production Oracle instances and MS SQL Server databases; Engages Oracle and Microsoft support as required to resolve complex issues; Supports 24X7 off-hour on-call on a rotation basis; Provides support of application deployments and management of middleware products; and Works with clients to coordinate and promote new versions of Oracle DBMS, MS SQL and middleware support products, new installations, upgrades, and patches. 2. Database Environment: Identifies and recommends physical database design (example: performance, backup, recoverability); Installs, configures and upgrades Oracle and MS SQL server software and related products Tailors/adjusts security software to address application requirements; Reviews overall database usage trends and forecasts impact; identifies growth requirements for additional hardware, software, and network resources; Adjusts and tunes database and system components on an ongoing basis; Coordinates scheduled production outages following change release standards; Reviews changes to database design for adherence to standards and implements. Documents standards and procedures for database operations; Creates and maintains database administration guides for each client; Responds to unexpected database outages; determines failed component and extent of impact; identifies options and selects and assigns remedial and recovery activities; escalates issues to other sections and vendors as required; ensures status of problem is being tracked, logged, and communicated; rectifies problems with database components; develops and implements data restoration procedures as required; participates in debriefing the outage and develops measures to prevent reoccurrence; Proposes and develops strategic database improvements in technical areas of database implementation, support, and enhancement; Develops, documents, and enforces data security and disaster recovery plan with consideration for key dependencies; 2 P a g e
Acts in a consulting capacity supporting development teams during application design and implementation phases; and Troubleshoots user database issues, including working with end-user groups, external clients, technical support organizations, or 3rd party vendors. 3. Business Relationships: Meets with current clients to identify client-specific requirements; Analyses existing services and work practices; identifies and recommends potential areas of cost-savings. 4. Experience with MS SQL Server (2005, 2008); Additional experience with Web Logic and WebSphere would be an asset; Certificate in Oracle RDBMS 10g/11g preferred; Certificate in MS SQL Server preferred. Related experience must include: Minimum 5 years experience as an Oracle Database Administrator; Minimum 2 years experience as an MS SQL Server Database Administrator; Minimum 2 years managing Web Logic or WebSphere Application Servers preferred; Experienced working in a fast-paced implementation environment; Extensive database performance tuning experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Experienced in all subject areas and professional practices with regards to Oracle database administration; Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; Experience with UNIX/LINUX troubleshooting, scripting and security Ability to lead positive and effective client interactions and deal with highly sensitive and time bound client demands; Working knowledge of ITIL processes and tools; Sound knowledge of and experience in incident and change, service availability and continuity management processes Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; Ability to be flexible within the work environment and work alone or as a team player; Pragmatic, result-oriented, pro-active; Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and presentation skills; Strong organizational skills including demonstrated tenacity for following up with team members and leadership on outstanding items; Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and effectively prioritize; Ability to establish strong and effective working relationships at all levels and participate effectively.
