1 Job Description Job Title Lead DBA Function IT Services IT Applications Reporting to IT Applications Manager Direct Reports DBA team, currently comprising of two other DBA s Working Hours Standard 35 hours per week Normally working Mon Fri 9am to 5pm with additional hours as required Other Hours of Work: Due to the nature of the role, it will be required to work outside core hours as well as weekends Job Purpose This role will focus on the installation, configuration, administration, monitoring and maintenance of the database management systems that underpin PPL s software applications. As well as being directly involved in this Database Administration activity, the role will also be responsible for managing and developing a small team of more junior DBAs. PPL s systems are predominantly based on Oracle 10g/11g database technology. In addition, Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2012 underpins the package software we use for calculating member distributions and is the basis of the data warehouse that is currently being constructed. Context of the Role Any party wishing to broadcast or play sound recordings (typically music) in a public setting in the UK must purchase a licence from PPL. The licence income collected by PPL must then be allocated and distributed to the record companies that own the sound recordings and to the musicians that performed on them. To achieve this allocation and distribution, PPL has a range of software systems: - The Repertoire Database Based on Oracle 11g database technology, PPL operates one of the world s largest and most authoritative databases of sound recording metadata. This system is fed with large volumes of data (around 10,000 recordings per week) from all the record companies that release sound recordings in the UK. Oracle Warehouse Builder and SAS Dataflux technologies are used to standardise and de-duplicate the data we receive in what is essentially a bespoke Master Data Management system. The Repertoire Database currently stores metadata for 6 million distinct sound recordings. PPL has recently invested in Informatica PowerCentre and over the coming months, all data movement and integration will be migrated from OWB onto Informatica. - The Usage and Matching System Also based on Oracle 11g, OWB and SAS Dataflux, this system receives data about all the music that is broadcast on TV and Radio across the UK. Through a complex set of routines, the system seeks to match the usage it has received to the sound recordings we hold in the Repertoire Database. In any given year, this system receives data accounting for 3.2 billion seconds of music usage, and matches to around 350,000 sound recordings in the Repertoire Database. - The Member Management System Is based on Salesforce.com and is accessed through a WebLogic and Java portal. - The Distribution System is a package application from Real Software that runs on a SQL Server 2008 database. This system generates around 320 million rows of data each time a distribution is processed as it stores data for each performer, for each month, for each source of income, for each sound recording. - The Data Warehouse we are currently constructing a data warehouse to combine data from across our systems such that we can undertake deeper analysis and gain greater Amo Lead Oracle Dba Job Description Page 1

2 insight into our operations. This will be constructed around Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition and will use Informatica for all ETL tasks. With the exception of Salesforce.com, these systems all run on infrastructure that is operated and managed by a 3 rd party hosting provider (Rackspace). Reporting to the Applications Manager, the Lead Database Administrator will be accountable for the effective and pro-active administration and support of the PPL systems described above. The scope of the role covers both production and non-production databases, including deployment of releases between environments. The Database Administrator will be expected to work in close collaboration with other members of the Applications and IT Projects teams as well as the wider IT department, including assisting the development teams with performance tuning and other support. As the lead DBA, this role has day-to-day team lead responsibility for the DBA team which currently consists of two others, and is expected to provide technical leadership including definition and proactive improvement of processes / working practices within their sphere of expertise, as well as knowledge sharing with the other DBA s. This role requires a self-motivated individual combining a high degree of technical skill with a proactive, can-do attitude, flexible approach, and strong focus on both quality and customer service. It is ideally suited for someone looking to take the first steps in team leadership. Internal contact will be primarily with Membership Services, Distribution, Usage, International and Finance departments, whilst external contact will be with hosting providers and software vendors. Work Experience 4 year s minimum experience as an Oracle Database Administrator with both production and development responsibility in a structured environment 2 year s experience of administering and deploying Oracle Warehouse Builder in a clustered environment 2 year s experience administering complex, mission-critical bespoke production databases using RAC Experience as a DBA in projects involving complex bespoke data processing, ETL and data warehousing requirements Service delivery experience in an IT managed services organisation is preferred Leading a small team Functional / Professional Knowledge Essential: Proven expertise in the following: Database administration using Oracle 10g / 11g (11g preferred) Professional certification (eg OCP) on Oracle 10g / 11g (11g preferred), Administration of mission-critical production databases, including RAC configuration Administration and deployment of Oracle Warehouse Builder SQL, PL/SQL performance tuning, using Oracle Enterprise Manager Management of database, data warehouse and Oracle Warehouse Builder deployment using formal configuration management tools Linux / Unix shell scripting (RHEL5 preferred) ITIL or similar service management methodologies Desirable: Experience of Master Data Management Experience of Data Quality concepts and tools Experience of using XML to manipulate data on a large scale Experience of administering Microsoft SQL Server (2008 / 2012) Experience of administering a Data Warehouse Experience with Informatica s PowerCenter ETL/middleware tool.
