The Partnership Update - March 2007 Partners' Forum Dear Members: We are nearing the Partners' Forum in Tanzania and are looking forward to greeting and meeting those members who are able to join us from the evening of Tuesday, April 17 until the afternoon of Friday, 20 April. There is an very full agenda planned for the meeting in Tanzania. Malaria prophylaxis before travel is advised. A Yellow Fever certificate is also required for entry to Tanzania for all travelers coming from endemic countries. Emergency health facilities will be available on site at the Partners Forum venue, at the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel. The designated government referral facility is the Muhimbili Medical Centre. A number of private facilities also exist in Dar es Salaam, including the Aga Khan Hospital, Ocean Road, tel: 022-211-5151/3. Chemist shops are located on Samora Avenue. What to Pack Mid-April in Tanzania is warm and humid, with daytime temperatures reaching 25-30 degrees Celcius, with occasional rain. Mosquito repellent and an umbrella are recommended. Hair-dryers are supplied in hotel bathrooms. The voltage is between 220 and 240. A three flat-pronged plug is used in Tanzania, similar to that which is used in the United Kingdom. It is advisable to have both square and round adaptors on hand for mobile phone chargers, laptop adaptors, etc. Business attire is smart-casual for men and women. For casual wear, short skirts and bare shoulders are not advised in Tanzania.

Entry Visa Delegates may require a visa for Tanzania (please check your status at http://www.tanzania.go.tz/visa.html). If visas cannot be obtained in advance, they will be available for purchase on an emergency basis at a special counter set up near the Immigration window upon arrival at the Dar es Salaam airport. Luggage Security Theft has been reported recently from checked baggage on arrival at the Dar es Salaam airport. Travellers are advised to lock their bags before traveling. Airport Transfers Airport transfers will be provided as a courtesy for all delegates upon arrival and exit from the airport in Dar es Salaam. Upon arrival, please look for the Partners' Forum banners near the baggage carousel. There will be staff from The Partnership there to greet you and show you to the buses. Delegates who wish to book private transport are advised to pre-arrange transfers via their hotels for a cost of approximately US$10 each way. Accommodation & Internet Connection Participants will be accommodated at the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel, Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski, and the Holiday Inn Hotel. Wireless internet is available in all rooms at the hotels. Hotel Help Desks Each of the three conference hotels will have a Partners Forum help desk in the lobby. The hours of operation of the desks will be posted, along with the timings of the conference shuttles to and from the Holiday Inn and the Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski to the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel. Meeting Venue The venue for the meeting is the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel. The Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel is located in the heart of Dar es Salaam city; it is approximately 12 km, or 20 minutes, from Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport. Delegates who wish to arrange private transport are advised that the average cost of transfers from the designated conference hotels is about US$10 each way. Conference Shuttles Shuttle buses will operate morning and evening between the Holiday Inn and the Kempinski Kilimanjaro hotels to take delegates to the conference venue. A bus schedule will be available at each hotel help desk. Business Centre & IT Support There will be a dedicated business centre with computers, printers and Internet access available free-of charge for all conference delegates on the first floor, room 113 in the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel, from 07:30 to 19:30. Private meeting rooms are also available on request. All parallel break-out rooms will be equipped with LCD projectors for delegates who wish to make PowerPoint presentations. Money The official currency is the Tanzania shilling (Tsh), although US dollars are widely accepted in Dar es Salaam. The current USD-Tsh exchange rate is US$ 1 = Tsh 1,240. Tanzanian shillings are available in coinage of 10/=, 20/=, 50/= 100/=, 200/=. Other denominations are in notes which are 500/= 1,000/=, 2,000/, 5,000/= and 10,000/=. The hotel exchange counters offer a slightly more favourable rate of exchange than the counter outside the airport. The bureau de change at the Movenpick is open Monday to Saturday from 0800 to 2000.

Automatic teller machines (ATM) are available widely through Dar es Salaam, allowing cash withdrawals from most foreign bank accounts. The nearest ATM to the Movenpick is at Barclays Bank, located directly across the street from the entrance of the Movenpick. Visa, MC and American Express are widely accepted. Language Kiswahili and English are both spoken widely in Dar es Salaam. Time Zone Dar es Salaam is located at GMT +2. For instance, 15:00 in Dar es Salaam is 19:00 in Phnom Penh, 17:30 in Delhi, 14:00 in Geneva, 13:00 in London, 08:00 in New York and 05:00 in Seattle. Security Participants should avoid walking outside the hotel alone, especially at night. As when traveling to any country in the world, there are things that we can do to minimize the risks of having possessions stolen/becoming a victim of crime. It may be a good idea to maintain the philosophy of taking with you, only that which you are prepared to lose.
