BDO can assist in mitigating this through: Due diligence Control design and implementation; and Audit remediation Research shows that SAM programmes require more than a tool to be successful; it is an integrated initiative requiring process redesign and dedicated resources for all possible benefits to be fully realised. Similarly, there is no such thing as a big, one-time payback from SAM. It is a series of incremental steps or stages that lead to savings over time. WHY A SAM PROGRAMME? What s to gain? A SAM programme can return R5 to R10 for every R1 invested. Companies investing a minimum of 3% of their annual operating budgets into IT asset management programmes (including SAMs) can expect a 25% reduction in total cost of ownership. What is lost without one? AT LEAST 75% of all companies worldwide are overspending on their IT assets LESS THAN of the global customer base 10% have an effective software asset management programme in place AROUND 9% of software costs (UK companies) are tied up in over-licensing AROUND 90% of software in Africa is illegal

SAM principles: Software investments must be identified, evaluated, and managed so expenditures are optimised across the enterprise. Software assets must be employed in ways that achieve the business objectives of your organisation. Software asset data is captured in a way that facilitates analysis and reporting. Software asset information detail required for an agency to efficiently and effectively manage its information technology operations (assets) is expected to meet or exceed the level of detail required. Accurate software asset management is performed to ensure continued alignment with the organisation s cost and risk objectives. Software asset data should be accessible as individual records are aggregated into groups of related items. The cost and effort required to manage assets should not exceed the total value of the asset over its lifecycle. Value is based on purchase price plus value added factors like maintenance, ongoing support, disposal, and any potential risk to state, such as legal or political impact. This is a timeous process with specific stages that need to be achieved to ensure success.
