3 Green Vs Sustainability Going Green... At work and at home, we re encouraged to recycle in an effort to protect the environment. The GREEN I m seeing is environmental Sustainability. Many of these initiatives are taking place within the technology side, and more specifically in the IT arena. Some examples include data centre design, server consolidation, strategies and tactics to reduce power, water, and HVAC consumption. 3
4 Sustainable Practice Simplest form sustainable practices are those that allow the present generation to meet their needs without adversely affecting the ability of future generations to do the same. It includes at least three main components 1) People 2) The planet 3) Profits. Societal Security The way ISO22031 addresses it (ISO s BCM Standard expected by End of this year) 4

Holistic management process that identifies potential threats to an organization and the impacts to business operations that those threats, if realized, might cause and which provides a framework for building organizational resilience with the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, business, reputation and brand BS :2007, Clause 2.4 6

10 BCM relevance to Sustainability Recently published UK disaster recovery invocation statistics which showed that power related disruptions were the fastest growing cause of customer disaster declarations Given the extreme dependency that the data centre has on power supplies, anything that organisations can do to better manage power and cooling within IT environments and lessen the load on their supply systems the better their business continuity positioning will be. Integrating a Green approach into the business continuity management strategy can, therefore, lower risk, reduce costs and make better use of resources. 10
11 BCM relevance to Sustainability Enhanced management effectiveness of the current exponential data growth, reducing operational risk exposure. Enabling non-stop operations, non disruptive storage growth and maintenance which further assures information availability day to day. Delivering the flexibility for the alignment of data protection mechanisms across the storage estate, irrespective of vendor or product. This will negate the requirement for dedicated storage system administration teams and lead to better people availability. Helping the organisation meet regulatory compliance objectives in a cost effective way. 11
12 BCM relevance to Sustainability Helping with the alignment of storage services to the business together with the optimised data protection and information security / BCM overlays. Helping to reduce the operational exposure to IT disaster recovery plan invocation (invoking the DR plan creates its own risks). Resource flexibility that will meet the requirements of an agile business. 12
13 BCM relevance to Sustainability Emergency management professionals have long recognized how vital it is to protect the environment. The second of three priorities in the people, planet and profit that are adhered to consistently, right between the protection of life and the protection of property. Additionally, BCM professionals are often faced with resource management issues. Issues where response and recovery goals and tasks must be accomplished with resources that are limited in supply resources that can t afford to be wasted. 13
14 How does, what I m doing positively impact Sustainability? Managing projects Define an environmental policy, identifying and prioritizing the issues the organization wants to address. Do this within the context of the enterprise's existing Business Continuity Management Systems and CSR Conducting Business Impact Analysis Identifying critical business activities through BIA and ensuring that your IT infrastructure is aligned, you will by default be optimising IT expenditures and eliminating waste within your organisation. 14
15 How does, what I m doing positively impact Sustainability? Conducting Risk Analysis Include all environmental Risks that would affect organizations sustainability Developing recovery strategies Stop over provisioning on servers, storage, UPS, cooling and so on. In an energy- and carbon sensitive world, this is a habit that needs to change. Virtualize and consolidate. Supply Chain - Look for Insight Into the Technology or Service Providers' Own Environmental Programs. Look for an environmental assessment of the vendor's operations, products, services and supply chain. 15
16 How does, what I m doing positively impact Sustainability? Planning Challenge the Technology Providers' Products Use existing and emerging energy management tools, as well as address behavioural issues to decrease the power consumption of IT-related equipment. Move From "Always On" to "Always Available" in the Data Center Include in the plan to remove unused equipment. Exercising Perform Tabletop and Walk through Exercises more frequently than that of SIMULATIONs that could be planned once every year or even every 2 years. 16
17 How does, what I m doing positively impact Sustainability? Training and creating awareness Green the Staff Include the sustainability as part of the BCM awareness Create Awareness to ensure usage of Green Printers and Printing Switch It Off if It's Not in Use Responding & Recovering from events Resource flexibility that will meet the requirements of an agile business. 17
18 Final Thoughts Today, business continuity management and green strategies should be integrated. Green is good for business continuity, green is good for business. IT - the biggest user of power Power, data growth and storage Higher utilisation rates and agility from storage resources Virtualization helping with power and cooling reductions 18
19 Points to think about "The IT Industry Is Part of the Climate Change and Sustainability Problem "Are Alternative Environmental Delivery Models More Environmentally Sustainable? "How to Manage the Environmental Impact of Printing "The Role of Job Schedulers in Reducing Power Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emissions "Use Existing Standards for a Quick Start to Green IT Procurement Business Continuity and Emergency Management professionals can become leaders of change when it comes to sustainability. 19
20 Are you ahead in the Green Curve? Does your organisation have a Green initiative, a strategy to reduce your organisation s environmental impact, underway? Does your organisation s general business continuity management strategy actively involve IT professionals with an IT service continuity strategy (see BS25777 Code of Practice for ICT Continuity ) Does your IT service continuity strategy (if it exists) align your critical IT infrastructure to your critical business activities, as defined by business impact analysis (BIA)? If the answers to above are a resounding YES and your business continuity professional are actively involved, then I believe you are ahead of the green curve. 20
