Michael L. Evans, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN 3 Barnes-Jewish College moved in spring 2008 into a new 40 million dollar, 105,000 square foot building that includes extensive simulation teaching facilities which earned the distinction as a Laerdal Center of Educational Excellence, one of only 12 such centers in the world. Simulation staff and faculty were leaders in research investigating outcomes of student learning with simulation as well as using simulation to improve outcomes in patient care. Selected accomplishments while in this role include: Completing the execution of a strategic plan in less than 3 years when it was originally thought it would take 5 this included transitioning some programs out of the College, building the BSN and graduate programs and placing major emphasis on a vibrant research program. Playing a key role in a capital campaign that resulted in raising 20 million dollars, including a gift naming the school and 4 endowed chairs, to be used for new building technology, education programs and research programs. Creating a partnership with Missouri Baptist Medical Center resulting in a satellite campus of the school beginning in the spring term of 2011, eventually with 200 additional BSN students. Creating a partnership with the St. Louis College of Pharmacy resulting in joint academic programming, joint student extracurricular events as well as the potential for a future residence hall which will be shared by pharmacy and nursing students. Leading the creation of a partnership between 4 local schools of nursing resulting in multiple successes, including progress toward a joint faculty practice program in a local clinic serving the uninsured. Serving as a member of the Governing Council of the Washington University Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), integrating research activities in the

January 1995 December 2006 TEXAS HEALTH RESOURCES, Arlington, Texas Vice President for Learning and Chief Learning Officer (Jan 2001 Dec 2006) This newly created corporate position, reporting to the Executive Vice President of THR, was responsible for coordinating and insuring the operational relevance of all educational activities and creating a health care corporate university model for this health care system consisting of 12 hospitals, 1 long-term care facility and 18,000 employees. Continued to serve as a full voting member on the Chief Nurse Executive Council at the request of the CNEs in the 12 system facilities. The presence in this body enabled the championing of key initiatives at the system level on behalf of the Chief Nurse Executive Council. Also led several system changes to enhance staff nurse job satisfaction, such as beginning the measurement of staff nurse job satisfaction in all 12 system hospitals. Selected accomplishments while in this role include: Securing over $1.5 million in federal and state grant funding to create the Dallas-Fort Worth Nursing Education Partnership including 20 hospitals and 3 schools of nursing. This program was created to increase the numbers of nurses graduating from the schools as well as increasing the numbers of BSN nurses as well as MSN prepared nurses for faculty positions. The success of the program was disseminated nationally and internationally. The Texas State Legislature adopted the program into state law in May 2007, calling for funding and replication of the model throughout the state of Texas. Developing nurse internships in multiple specialty areas in order to prepare graduate nurses to be able to practice in specialty areas. The internships also prepared the nurses to sit for certification examinations in each specialty area. Leading the creation of a shared governance model to give staff nurses a voice in organizational decision making. Instituting a nurse satisfaction survey with longitudinal measurement and achieving continuous improvement that resulted in a reduction in the RN turnover rate from 25% to less than 5% over a five year period. Guiding the development of nurse internship programs for each specialty. Guiding the development of a nurse self-scheduling system to give predictability and control of work time Promoting evidence-based nursing practice and created opportunities for nurses to participate in research projects through support for research coordinator role. Working with staff nurses to create a Career Advancement System, which rewarded staff nurses for development activities, including participation in research activities and achieving the BSN and MSN degrees. Reducing contract nursing agency expenses through a common contract and rates and greatly decreased usage, which was a major nurse satisfier. Re-establishing productive relationships with local colleges and universities. Maintaining high visibility and regular communication opportunities with employees, which was a major employee satisfier. Beginning the process of preparation for magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 1999. The hospital achieved magnet designation in 2004. Measuring staff nurse job satisfaction with planning for and demonstration of continuous improvement, which greatly reduced turnover and enhanced recruitment. Initiating of a model for staff nurse input into organizational decision-making. Working with staff nurses to develop a new care delivery model. The legislation was based on replicating the Dallas-Fort Worth Nursing Education Partnership consisting of 20 hospitals and 3 local schools of nursing. I conceived of and implemented the DFW partnership model in order to address the nursing shortage as well as the faculty shortage and the effect of the shortage on care quality and nurse satisfaction with the workplace. Texas Peer Assistance Act of 1987 Led, advocated for and testified on behalf of the passage of this bill, the first of its kind, creating the Texas Peer Assistance Program for Impaired Nurses. This was a unique partnership model between the Texas Nurses Association and the Texas Board of Nursing to protect the jobs and licenses of impaired nurses who sought treatment. Nursing Practice Policy Texas Health & Safety Code change in 1991 authorizing RNs to determine death As President of the TNA, I led, advocated for and testified on behalf of this change, to improve care of all patients and their families. I represented TNA in interfacing with the Texas Medical Association and Texas Hospital Association to negotiate and to craft language acceptable to all organizations, which was essential for this code change to occur. Texas Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriptive Authority Act of 1989 As President of TNA, I led, advocated for and testified on behalf of the passage of this bill, one of the first in the nation.

Unpublished doctoral dissertation. The University of Texas, Austin. Dissertation research derived from ANA experience and a curiosity about labor unions and their effect, if any, on staff nurse workplace job satisfaction. Study compared staff nurse job satisfaction in 3 national samples of staff nurses in state nurse association (SNA) labor union workplace environments, trade labor union workplace environments and non-union workplace environments. Found the highest mean satisfaction scores in nurses represented by SNA unions and a significant difference between SNA unions and trade labor unions. The Executive Director of ANA, Dr. Barbara Redman, was on the dissertation committee and the abstract of this study was widely disseminated by ANA to the state associations and the wider nursing community via ANA publications, ANA presentations and special notices.
