What s in this kit. Check that you have the following items: 2 x filters 1 x wireless modem 1 x grey DSL cable 1 x black power supply cable 1 x white ethernet cable 2
This guide will take you through each step to set up your modem. Everything you need to set up a basic connection or a wireless network is covered on the following pages: Your computer To set up your Internet connection, you ll initially need to use the Ethernet cable. Due to the length of the cable, your computer needs to be close to the jackpoint. NOTE: Once you ve established a connection using the cable, you ll be able to set up a wireless Internet connection. With wireless Internet you ll be able to unplug the cable and connect to the Internet anywhere in your business. Connecting filters You need to connect a filter wherever you have a phone line in use, including phones, faxes or digital TV decoders. This will remove interference on your phone lines and improve your broadband service. Unplug your phone, fax or digital TV decoder from the jackpoint. If you need more filters, you can purchase them from BES Telecom. Call us on 0844 5678 427. 3
Plug the supplied filter into the jackpoint. Jackpoint Filter Phone cable Phone (or other device) Plug your phone (or other device) into the end of the filter marked phone. Plug in your modem Plug one end of the grey DSL cable into the DSL port on your modem Jackpoint Filter with ADSL port Grey DSL Cable DSL port Black power cable Phone Power plug 4
Plug the other end of the grey DSL cable into the end of the filter marked ADSL. Plug one end of the black power cable into the modem and the other end into the wall socket. Turn on the power at the wall. Connecting your modem to the computer Plug one end of the white ethernet cable into any ethernet port on the modem. Plug the other end of the white ethernet cable into the ethernet port on your computer which has a symbol like this: Press the black on/off button to turn the modem on. On/off switch 5
Check your modem lights Check that all four lights illustrated in the diagram above the green. This can take up to two minutes. The power light should be a solid green, any of the other lights may be flashing green. Lights amber or not working? See the troubleshooting section on page 8. Setting up your wireless connection Router Setup and Configuration 6 Setting up a wireless router is straightforward as long as you have a PC with a wireless network adapter, as well as an active Internet connection. This general procedure will guide you through the process for the common kinds of network equipment.
Setup your Wireless Router on a Windows PC 1. Connect the wireless router to your modem using an ethernet cable. 2. Connect your wireless router to a power source. Wait about a minute, and then continue to the next step. 3. Click the network icon in the notification area; the icon should look like a series of vertical bars, or a tiny PC with a network adapter alongside it. 4. Select your wireless network from the list of available networks to complete the setup process. If you can t set up your wireless router as explained above, you may need to configure your router manually. Manually Configure your Router 1. Connect your wireless router to the modem, using an ethernet cable. 2. Connect the wireless router to a power source. Wait about a minute to ensure that your router is fully operational. 3. Connect the wireless router to your computer using an ethernet cable. 4. Log in to your router s Web interface by opening a browser and entering the IP address of your router into the address bar. The IP address should be listed within your router s documentation. Can t find your IP address? 5. Enter the default username and password, which you should find within your router s documentation. (Username Administrator, Password Serial number from the router) 6. Use the Web interface to set up a network name and password. 7. Disconnect your computer from the wireless router and then reconnect wirelessly. Caution: Be sure to use a password to protect your wireless network. Unauthorised parties can easily connect to an unprotected network, stealing your bandwidth as well as your personal data. Include a combination of letters, symbols, and numbers to build a better password, and don t use words found in the dictionary. The onetime minor inconvenience of connecting a computer to a password-protected network is worth the huge security advantage. Congratulations! You should now be experiencing wireless broadband. 7
Troubleshooting Guide If you have problems setting up your modem check below for a solution: The power light is off Check that the black power cable is connected to both the wall and the modem. (step 3) Check that the power is turned on at both the wall and the back of the modem. (step 4) The ethernet light is off Check that the ethernet cable is connected correctly to both the modem and your computer. (step 4) The broadband light is flashing or not lit Check that you have put jackpoint filters on all phones, faxes and digital TV decoders. (step 2) You may have a faulty jackpoint. Try connecting to another jackpoint. (step 3) 8
