4 About the Netherlands Relatively speaking, the Netherlands is a quite small country with a population of 16.8 million people, which makes it one of the most densely populated countries in the world. On the other hand, the Netherlands is one of Europe s most accessible and centrally located countries, with major European cities in countries like England, France and Germany close by. The extensive rail, road and air network enable you to get to any place of interest, in the Netherlands and in Europe, quickly and easily. The country has a knowledgebased society and its prosperity is primarily based on sophisticated, global services. The Dutch have always had extensive trade relations with other countries and continents, and the tradition of openness towards the rest of the world is very much alive today. It is open to business and for business, but also open in a social and cultural sense. This international orientation along with religious tolerance have led to a well integrated international mix of people settling in the Netherlands over the centuries. Dutch culture The Dutch regard their reputation for down-to-earth directness as a sign of honesty and openness. They are used to discussing differences of opinion and admire those who stand up for themselves, their ideas and ideals. The Dutch are also known for being tolerant, particularly to those of different opinions and persuasions; freedom is a cherished virtue in the Netherlands. Also, being a small country, the national language, Dutch, is little spoken outside the Netherlands so the majority of the population speaks English and often other foreign languages as well, like German or French. This makes it an ideal environment for students who want to enrich their knowledge abroad. About Eindhoven Eindhoven is located in the south-east of the Netherlands, within 50 kilometers of both the German and Belgian borders and about 100 kilometers of Amsterdam. The Eindhoven region is served by an international airport and a comprehensive road and rail network. With a population of around 217,000, it is the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands. Eindhoven is a modern city with extensive cultural and sports facilities as well as plenty of city parks and rural countryside nearby. It also has a lot to offer for people with a technological focus. You can find out more about Eindhoven at www.eindhoven.eu. Brainport EIndhoven TU/e is situated in the top technology region Brainport, the beating technological heart of the Netherlands, with many excellent relationships with high-tech companies and organizations in the region. The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2013 shows that TU/e has the strongest research cooperation with industry of all universities worldwide. This demonstrates the stability of the unique and intensive partnerships between TU/e and industry, and specifically with high tech companies in the Brainport Eindhoven region. As a student you can benefit from the presence of many high-tech companies located both on and near the TU/e campus. The claim that Eindhoven is leading in technology is more than just a slogan. Forty percent of all Dutch spending on research and development

TU/e Graduate School 5 Xin Hu (China) Commenting on the Electrical Engineering Master s, student Xin Hu says that the Master s program includes a number of internships in industry. These give you a good impression of your future, in terms of both the environment in which you re later going to work and the contents of your specialized field. Classes with a strong link to issues that come up in practice enable you to do these internships. The teachers are helpful, and they also help you to find an internee position. I find that very useful because I don t have so many contacts yet. After my Master I may decide to do a Technological Designer s program in the TU/e Graduate School to prepare me even better for the future. It means two years of extra studying, but one year of that is in a company. I m really looking forward to that. Once I ve finished my studies, I think I might work in the Netherlands because there s still a lot that I can learn here. takes place in this region, which is internationally recognized as a center for advanced technology and characterized by knowledge and creativity. As one of Western Europe s leading technology centers it is strategically important and has been the base for the R&D facilities of Royal Philips Electronics for over a century. With many other global companies having established research, development and production facilities in the Eindhoven area, it is no surprise that Eindhoven and the surrounding region is officially referred to as Brainport. Like the High Tech Campus Eindhoven in which research and development take place in an environment of open innovation, focusing on the technology of tomorrow and helping to create a caring, safe and sustainable world. You benefit from these relationships in terms of your assignments, internships, graduation projects and future career. Eindhoven has everything you need, all the facilities and amenities you would expect of a modern city. A great place to live, work and learn. 6 2 TU/e Graduate School The TU/e Graduate School offers 15 graduate programs each focused on a specific field of research. A graduate program consists of one or more with the possibility to continue with a Technological Designer s or PhD program in the same field. This offers you as a student the chance to specialize within a research discipline along with the freedom to decide on your research project and how you want to flesh it out. So after you have completed your Master, you can opt for a designer s program within that domain or apply for a suitable PhD position or even to start a career in industry. The strong relationship between research and education within a graduate program ensures that the results of state-of-the-art research are naturally integrated into the education. Moreover, you see the same intrinsic focus in cooperation with industry. This generates countless opportunities for cooperation both during and after your study. In brief, a graduate program at TU/e comprises three components from which you can choose: Master of Science programs, leading to an MSc degree Post-Master, leading to a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) PhD programs, leading to a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) degree In the Netherlands, a Master s degree or an equivalent qualification is required for admission to a PhD or PDEng program. As a result, an Eindhoven graduate program for foreign Bachelor s graduates typically comprises an MSc program followed by either a PhD or a PDEng program. Even so, it is still possible to follow just one or two components within a graduate program (see the figure on page 7). The two-year at TU/e are conducted in English. TU/e offers 22 Master s programs and 8 Special Master s tracks. The difference between programs and special tracks is in their formal status. The relatively new special tracks have not yet been recognized by the government as independent programs. If you graduate in one of these Special Master s tracks, you will receive the diploma of the corresponding recognized Master s program. All these programs link up education and research, which means that TU/e students are up close to the latest technological developments. All MSc degree programs offered by TU/e are fully accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). There is a wide choice of specializations and once you have successfully completed your studies you are awarded the degree of Master of Science (MSc). More information can be found on www.tue.nl/masterprograms.

TU/e Graduate School 7 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) ECTS is a standard system, based on the workload of a student to complete course units. One ECTS is equivalent to a workload of 28 hours. A full-time, one-year program amounts to 60 credits, which comprises a student workload of about 1,680 hours. Post-Master TU/e offers several two-year PDEng programs which will help Master s graduates in engineering to expand their technological knowledge, to apply this in practice and to work on their professional skills. In the first year, students mainly take courses and in the second year of the program they do a complex design project in industry. Once you have successfully completed your studies, you will be awarded a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng), equivalent to the British Engineering Doctorate. All designer s programs (PDEng programs) offered by TU/e are fully certified by the Dutch Certification Committee for Technological Designer s Programs (CCTO). When you enroll in a post- Master Technological Designer s program, you are considered to be an employee and you will receive a salary. Full information on all TU/e PDEng programs can be found on www.3tu.nl/sai. PhD programs After gaining your Master s or Technological Designer s degree, you can apply for a PhD position within the TU/e Graduate School where you can develop into an independent researcher within four years. You will undertake research within a domain under the supervision of a professor, and complete the research with a dissertation. You will write scientific articles, give presentations to scientists in your field at conferences and seminars as well as perform some educational duties. TU/e also offers PhD students the opportunity to take courses and training geared to personal development as well as supplementary scientific schooling. All TU/e research programs in which PhD students participate are subject to independent external assessments according to the Standard Evaluation Protocol 2009-2015 for Public Research Organizations. As an employee of TU/e, you will receive a salary during your PhD research period along with attractive secondary employment conditions. Once you have successfully completed your dissertation, you will be awarded the title of Doctor of Philosophy, which will boost your career prospects in both science and industry. Full information on all TU/e PhD programs can be found on www.tue.nl/jobs. Joint Master programs and Joint PhD programs TU/e is involved in various joint or joint PhD (Sandwich PhD) programs funded by the EU.
