We are committed to excellence in teaching, mentoring of graduate students, research, and service, and to fostering community among scholars. unm lies in the heart of Albuquerque, a high desert city of 700,000 bordered by the Sandia Mountains, featuring the Rio Grande, and enjoying 310 days of sunshine per year, mild winters, miles of recreational trails, and beautiful sunsets. the National Communication Association s most recent survey ranked our program #3 in intercultural communication in the united States. We use the term inter/ cultural deliberately to stress our interest in (1) culture as socially constructed and structurally produced through communicative practices; and (2) the study of difference as perceived and communicated across cultures. the MA program leads to a general communication degree. It is typically a twoyear program. the PhD program offers emphases in intercultural communication, health communication, and mass communication. It is a three-to-four year program, depending on student background, interests, and needs, as well as the kind of research study selected for the dissertation. Funding via teaching assistantships is provided for up to four years and includes a tuition waiver and health benefits. GRADUATE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES Intercultural Engagement Project As a special independent study available for a variety of intercultural activities, the Intercultural Engagement Project gives students the option to enroll for up to three credits of graduate course work. The IEP can be an individual project designed in consultation with faculty, or students can take part in exchange programs offered by the department. Since 2008, C&J has had a graduate exchange program with the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, which engages students and faculty from both universities in an intensive oneweek, three-credit course--alternating yearly between Odense and Albuquerque. Course titles have included Health, Identity, and Culture, Cultural Places and Spaces, and Cultural Memory and the Media. We are pursuing similar exchanges with the Mudra Institute of Communications in Ahmedabad, India, and the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Teaching Students have the opportunity to individually teach two classes per semester, teach a variety of classes, and teach undergraduates who bring diverse cultural experiences into the classroom. They have access to training and resources at UNM s Teaching Assistant Resource Center and the Center for the Advancement of Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning, and benefit from the supervision and supportive feedback from departmental faculty regarding teaching.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION & JOURNALISM UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO 505.277.5305 THE GRADUATE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Collaboration characterizes our diverse and international graduate student community; students work together and support one another in their academic endeavors, and faculty and students often collaborate in research, service projects, and social activities for the department. In addition, other campus the graduate curriculum offers students flexibility to design their program of studies in various ways, including the blending of courses within and beyond our department. the program also enables students to prepare for their futures as faculty or practitioners. For example, students often teach a variety of departmental courses; present at regional, national, and international conferences; and engage in their own research or in collaborative projects with faculty. In the department, graduate students enjoy a fully renovated building and state-of-the art technology. they work in newly designed offices, with access to departmental resources, and a graduate student-run lounge that includes amenities for eating, socializing, and studying. Collaborative work research centers and programs provide opportunities for collaboration, such as the Latin American & Iberian Institute, Southwest Hispanic Research Institute, Institute for American Indian Research, Women Studies, Africana Studies, the Research Service Learning Program, the Feminist Research Institute, and Sustainability Studies. The Institute of Communication, Culture and Change Within the department, the Institute of Communication, Culture, and Change promotes research with community partners to address local and international social justice issues. ICCC hosts annual community-department conferences and meetings to identify needs, foster networking, develop collaborative work, and offer small grants for community-based action research. ICCC also provides opportunities for graduate students to gain cultural knowledge and expertise in local communities, and allows for Service Learning and unique community-based participatory action research. Previous projects, awarded to faculty-graduate student-community groups, include Challenging Invisibility: Highlighting the Experiences of Asian Immigrants in Albuquerque and Comadre A Comadre: Peer Mentoring for Breast Cancer Survivors.
