DISCIPLINE Discipline means management not punishment. The goal is for each individual to be self-managed or disciplined. To assist students in learning self-management, instruction will include: character education, conflict resolution and citizenship education. This will start at the beginning of the year in each classroom as teachers teach the contents of the Handbook, including the discipline plan. The learning will continue throughout the year during state and system mandated character education lessons and in a variety of school activities. The Incentive-Based Discipline Plan is an extension of the Code of Conduct governing student behavior in Birmingham City Schools_ The plan seeks to build on the positive goals of the Code of Conduct and enable students to avoid becoming subject to the punishments specified in the code. This plan cannot work without parent involvement, Students and parents must first know and understand the rules and then accept that following the rules is a choice _good citizens make. The plan enables students to earn rewards for making the right choices. Students who choose not to follow the rules must learn that consequences result. Parental support is essential to make this or any discipline plan work: *To achieve this support open twoway communication between parents and the school staff is necessary. Using the Homework Assignment Folder daily is the first step. The following section describes the rules, incentives and steps for handling disruptive behavior.
