1 GREENSPUN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER COURSE EXPECTATION SHEET Teacher: Joie Bloom Course Title: English 6 Course Number: 0210 Course Scope: Course Goals: This one-year course provides instruction in the English Language Arts strands identified by the Common Core State Standards as reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This course is designed to build knowledge and critical thinking skills through close reading of texts; writing to support claims, to clarify ideas, and/or to develop ideas; and a range of collaborative discussions. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills the sixth grade English requirement. 1. To read and study a wide variety of text (informational, fiction and non-fiction, expository) independently and proficiently. [RL.6.1-7, 9-10; RI ] 2. To respond, and/or explain, in writing or speaking with a focus on: how an author conveys the theme or central idea of a text through structure and details, how an author develops point of view in text, and how an author develops an argument. [RL.6.5; RI.6.5; W.6.1-8; SL.6.3; L.6.1] 3. To demonstrate a command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. [W.6.4-5; SL.6.6; L.6.1-3] 4. To generate and support ideas by conducting short research projects and gathering relevant information from multiple print and digital sources to use when writing or speaking. [RL.6.1; RI.6.1; W.6.7-9; SL.6.1] 5. To combine information from multiple sources to support analysis of literary and informational text to produce clear and coherent writing appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. [RL.6.1; RI.6.1; W.6.1-2, 4, 8-9; SL.6.1a, 2-4, 6; L.6.1-3, 6] 6. To explore the elements of text, selected from a range of sixth grade literary and informational text exemplars to understand how authors use structure, word choice, details, and elaboration to convey the theme, central idea, or purpose of a text. [RL.6.1-6; RI.6.1-6; W.6.1-2; SL.6.4; L.6.4-6] 7. To learn the purposes and characteristics of the major genres of text (e.g., prose, poetry, drama, literary non-fiction). To apply the general strategies of organization, and revision to produce writing (e.g., argument, expository, narration) appropriate to task, purpose, and audience whether over time or under a tight deadline. [W ]
2 Grading Policy: Grades will be weighted as listed below: Practice work and homework-10%. This includes work that is completed at home and school for practice. This does NOT include projects. Classroom assessments, projects, and compositions 90%. This includes classroom assessments and activities where students demonstrate what they actually know in relation to the objectives being taught. This includes, but is not limited to: tests, quizzes, oral presentations/defenses, worksheets, essays, projects, creative writing, note taking, etc.* Grades and Citizenship: Quarter grades will be based on: Practice/homework 10% Tests/Quizzes 45% Projects/Compositions 45% Total: 100% Semester Grades: Each semester grade will be comprised of Quarter 1 & 2 45% Quarter 3 & 4 45% Semester exam 10% Total: 100% How and when students will be advised of their grades: Infinite Campus real time live system Unsatisfactory D & F Grades - noted in mid-quarter progress in Infinite Campus Citizenship: Citizenship will be determined utilizing a Citizenship Citation Rubric. Practice/Homework Work: Practice/Homework work may be assigned Monday through Thursday. Assignments posted on myccsd.net and in student agendas All work must be: Neat On straight-edged notebook paper Headed correctly using school-wide heading format On time Completed with a dark blue ink pen, black ink pen, or typed when needed Absent Assignments: When a student is absent (excused or unexcused), it is his/her responsibility to obtain missed assignments before or after school. The student will be expected to complete all missing work. Late/Missing Assignments: If a student chooses to turn in an assignment after the assigned due date, they will be penalized as follows: One day late: 10% off of the grade received Two days late: 20% off the grade received Three days late: 30% off the grade received Four or more days late: 0% - No credit will be given
3 After the third day, no credit may be given. Any assignment that is NOT turned in, will receive a zero. A day late is defined as being from one class period to the student s next class period for the same subject. Homework is considered late if the student does not have the assignment completed by the start of his/her specific class period. ** It is not the teacher s responsibility to provide an additional copy of an assignment/handout that the student has previously received in class** Agendas: Agendas will be used daily. Agendas will be utilized school-wide for hall passes. Students must have their agenda with them daily. Failure to have these materials may result in a grade of zero for class work. If a student loses or damages their agenda they must purchase a new one from the school banker. Classroom Rules and Consequences: 1. Respect yourself and others 2. Follow the directions the first time they are given 3. Be responsible 4. Stay on task 5. Always do YOUR best! Behavioral Expectations: Students are expected to follow the school wide rules and act in a respectful manner at all times. Consequences for misbehavior may include, but are not limited to: verbal warnings, use of the Citizenship Log, teacher detention, telephone conferences with parents/guardians, counselor/dean s referrals, and parent teacher conferences. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CLASS EVERYDAY: 1. Turnitin $4.00 access fee (submit payment online to WebStore or to school banker). Username: Student ID Password: first initial & last name (no spaces & all lower case letters). Ex: John Smith=jsmith 2. College ruled loose leaf paper (with 3 holes and kept in a binder) 3. 2 Composition notebooks 4. Greenspun agenda 5. #2 pencils 6. Pens (dark blue or black ink only) 7. Red grading pen 8. Four highlighters (yellow, blue, orange, and green) 9. Glue stick 10. Flash drive and/or access to web drop box platform 11. A package of colored pencils Turnitin is a web-based writing assessment toolkit which allows teachers to provide feedback to students through markup tools, rubrics, proofing tools and originality reports to detect plagiarism. It is a comprehensive cloud-based solution that helps students learn by facilitating personalized feedback. Turnitin also provides peer review options. Greenspun Jr. High will institute the program for submission of ELA assignments for the upcoming school year. A $4.00 user fee to access the comprehensive cloud-based program is a part of the student supply requirement as stated in student supply requirements. 4 Infinite Campus Greenspun Jr. High School will be utilizing Infinite Campus. This communication program will be available online for those families with computers and through the telephone for those without access to computers. We will also be utilizing the Infinite Campus and Autodialer system, so that we can get important information out to every student s home through the telephone as well. With an activated user account and password, families can access important school information like grades and attendance from home, school, work, or the library. Infinite Campus and Autodialer enhances the role of families in the day to day school experience by providing secured access to information such as daily and weekly assignments, grades, attendance, and tardies over the internet or phone. You will also be able to immediately post an e- mail message online to a teacher simply by clicking the teacher s name. It is important that all students and parents have activated accounts to receive weekly information on student achievement in individual classes.
