Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCM E&P SOLUTIONS Knowledge Worth Sharing Petrel 2014 User Interface Changes With Petrel 2014 the User Interface has significant changes. The changes to Petrel s interface reflect the rapidly changing interface designs aimed at minimizing the differences between devices such as desktop monitors, tablets and phones. The goal is to minimize the resizing, panning, and scrolling required by the user and to maximize the window display area. This is broadly defined as 'responsive web design'. This is the first of a series of brief TIPS&TRICKS articles featuring selected changes or options now available to the Petrel 2014 user. Topics covered here are: 1. User interface changes since Petrel 2013 2. User Interface options in Petrel 2014, 'Classic' vs 'Ribbon' interfaces 3. Petrel Help changes, 'Classic' vs 'Ribbon' interfaces dependence 4. Quick Access Toolbar 5. Tool Palette 6. Perspectives Changes since 2013: Petrel Startup The splash screen is different, but the 'wait' is unchanged. License Selection Reformatted license components Petrel s license selection window has changed between releases 2013 and 2014. 1

User Interface The default user interface in Petrel 2014 is the Ribbon interface. To view the more traditional looking interface, click: [From the Ribbon] File System Systems settings. Go to the Effects tab and put a check in the box in front of Classic user interface and click OK. To return to the ribbon interface, uncheck the box. There is no guarantee this option will be available after Petrel 2014. 3

Pane location changes: Pull-down menu changes are broadly unchanged except for the expected icon design changes, as well as new functionality introduced with version 2014. Typical example shown below. Note the Pane location changes from 2013 (Figure 1), to 2014 (Figure 2) in the Classic view. Figure 1: 2013 default interface (with message and task panes). The traditional or now 'classic' User view Figure 2: 2014 'Classic' interface option. 4

Toolbar Changes: 2013 'traditional' vs 2014 'Classic' interface Figure 2: Traditional Toolbar from Petrel 2013 Figure 3: Petrel 2014 Classic Toolbar In the 2014 Classic Interface, the toolbar has the same look-and-feel of the traditional Petrel user interface. A few new Icons appear in version 2014, dealing with the uncertainty of a wellbore plan, but will not be discussed here. Toolbar Changes: 2014 'Classic' vs 2014 'Ribbon' interface The traditional toolbar has been replaced by user customizable toolbar in 2014. When in Ribbon mode, the user can select additional pull-down menu items or by right-clicking on input folder data items. 5

Petrel 2014 has introduced a Quick Access Toolbar above (or below) the ribbon. The default Toolbar looks like: The default tools on this toolbar are: Save Project Undo Redo Window Adjust Color Table Inspector Players Copy Paste 6

The customized Quick Access Toolbar can easily adjusted by adding and removing tools, to improve the efficiency of often repeated work tasks. Add new tools to this toolbar by right-clicking on an object; right-clicking on a choice under the menu that appears (such as Copy as surface attribute) and then choosing Add to Quick Access Toolbar. The Quick Access Toolbar now looks like: NEW 7

Delete it from the Toolbar by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Remove from Quick Access Toolbar, You may add diverse items to the Quick Access Toolbar including: File System System Settings opens the System Settings dialog Import (on selection) - opens the correct import types for the selected object Calculator - opens the correct calculator for the selected object Settings opens the Settings for the selected object and many more 8

Action and Edit Toolbar Changes: 2014 'Classic' vs 2014 'Ribbon' interface In the 2014 Ribbon interface, the Process and Data specific Action and Edit tools, located in the Classic view on the top and right side of the Display Window are now available at the top-center of the window: Ribbon Classic 9

Tool Palette: 2014 'Ribbon' interface Frequently used edit and visualization tools can also be added to the Tool Palette. To access the Tool Palette, click on any option on a ribbon that contains a red toolbox. The two examples shown below are the Home and Structural Modeling ribbons. As you can see, there are multiple choices on the Structural Modeling ribbon. 10

Perspectives Petrel 2014 introduces the concept of Perspectives. These perspectives change what ribbons are available to use. Perspectives may be accessed from the Home ribbon. Included perspectives are: Seismic to Simulation Geology and Geophysics Advanced Geophysics Reservoir and Production Drilling Shale Each Perspective can have from 5 to 10 tabs, each with different ribbons. The examples below are from the Seismic to Simulation and Geology and Geophysics perspectives. Arrows point to differences. Seismic to Simulation Geology and Geophysics 11
