ADMISSION GUIDELINES Nagoya University Graduate School of Mathematics Master s Program (second round) Admission Policy Ideal Candidates for Graduate School of Mathematics are individuals with a solid academic foundation who seek to explore the boundaries of mathematics using an awareness of a broad range of problems and perspectives. 1 Qualifications needed to apply Applicants must meet one of the following conditions: (1) University graduates, or will graduate from university by March 31, 2012 (2) Persons who have obtained or will obtain, by March 31, 2012, a Bachelor s degree according to Article 104(4,1) of the School Education Law or will be conferred a Bachelor s degree by the end of March, 2013. (3) Persons who have completed, or will complete by March 31, 2012, 16 years of academic education in a foreign country. (4) Persons who have completed, or will complete by March 31, 2012, 16 years of academic education in Japan through correspondence courses run by foreign educational institutes. (5) Applicants who have completed an undergraduate course of a foreign university in Japan, which is an educational establishment approved in that particular foreign country (the applicants must have completed 16 years of school education in their education system) and have qualifications approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. (6) Applicants who have completed (or will complete by March 31, 2012) an advanced professional course of a professional training college. The course must fulfill the requirements set by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (e.g., offering a minimum of four years of education) and be recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, as such. Applicants must have graduated from the course after the date of approval by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. (7) Persons who have qualifications approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. (Notification No. 5 of the Ministry of Education, 1953) (8) Persons who have completed or will complete more than 3 years at university by March 31, 2012 or those who have completed 15 years of education in an education system in a foreign country or enrolled in a foreign university in Japan, which is approved by that foreign country s school education system (the applicants must be recognized to have completed 15 years in the 1

education system), and those who have qualifications approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan and who have been recognized by our Graduate School as having excellent results of the required credits. (9) Persons who will be 22 years of age or over as of March 31, 2012, and have been recognized by our Graduate School, based on the results of individual examinations of the applicant s qualifications, as having academic abilities equivalent or superior to university graduates. Note: Advanced screening is conducted for students applying under Application Eligibility qualifications (8) and (9). Applicants desiring advanced screening are required to submit in writing their 1) name, 2) address, telephone number, email address (if holding an email account), and 3) academic history (from high school graduation to the present) to the graduate school. This documentation must be sent by post and arrive at the graduate school by June 8, 2012. Please write Documentation Required for Advanced Screening for Master s Program on the front of the envelope. Use an express, stamped addressed envelope (square No. 2, 33cm 24cm, with a 390yen stamp, and your return address clearly indicated). 2 Number of Places Department Mathematical Sciences Noumber of Places 10 approx 3 Application Period January 5 (Thursday) 19 (Thursday), 2012 Hours received: 10:00 12:00, 13:00 16:00; Application must arrive by 16:00 on January 19 (Thursday) if sent by post. 4 Application Documents and Other Materials (1) Application for Admission (form designated by graduate school) (2) Your Personal History (C.V.) (use form designated by the graduate school) (3) Photo (taken within three months prior to application, affixed to the photo slip as indicated by the graduate school) (4) Transcripts (not required for graduates (or students anticipating graduation) of the Nagoya University School of Science) (5) Graduation (anticipated) Certificate (not required for graduates of School of Science) (6) Degree certificate (students satisfying the requirements of Application Eligibility (2), certified by a recognized organization granting academic titles) 2

(7) Self-addressed envelope (for sending examination admission slip, rectangular No. 3 (23.5cm 12cm) envelope, with 80yen stamp affixed, with your own name and address clearly written). (8) For the notification labels used by the university to send documents to you (Letter of Acceptance, Entrance Procedures), please be sure that the address is written clearly and is the same as the Address for notification on the application form. (9) Application fee payment form (enter your name in two locations in Name fields) (10) Admission application fee: 30,000yen ordinary money order. See Notes (2). Note: In addition to (1) (10), applicants are required to enter their current subjects (including details of graduation research if any) and the desired subjects upon enrollment on the designated form for submission. 5 Application Procedure Applicants must submit the documentation described in (1) (10) above to the graduate school. Incomplete application documentation will not be accepted. Important Points (1) Use registered mail when sending application documentation by post, and always write Graduate School Application on the front of the envelope. Ensure that it reaches its destination by the closing date. (2) Pay the application fee using a 30,000yen ordinary money order. Do not enter anything on the money order. (3) No changes in details, or refund of the application fee, are possible following application. 6 Selection Method (1) Scholastic ability Department Graduate School of Mathematics Examination Date February 7 (Tuesday), 2012 Test Subjects Written examination Note: Available in English if desired. The timetable for scholastic ability tests is sent together with the test admission slip. Note: Applicants desiring testing in English are required to submit in writing their 1) name, 2) address, telephone number, email address (if holding an email account), and 3) a written note to the effect that testing in English is desired. This documentation must be sent by post and arrive by January 6, 2012. Please write Request for Testing in English on the front of the envelope. 3

7 Announcement of Results At evening [tentative] February 7 (Tuesday), 2012 The results will be posted in front of the entrance to the Graduate School of Mathematics building. It is expected that the Letter of Acceptance will be sent to successful applicants at the end of September. Entrance Procedures, will be sent at the end of February. Applicants wishing to enroll while remaining employed in a government agency or private company are required to provide an enrolment authorization form from their employer. 8 Registration and Tuition Fees A Registration Fee (enrollment fee) 282,000yen (Fee must be paid within the period for admission procedures as specified by the university, during March 2013.) Tuition First semester 267,900yen (The annual amount is 535,800yen.) Notes: 1. Tuition fees are divided into first and second semesters. First semester tuition fees are paid in April, and second semester fees in October. 2. Please note that fees may change at the time of enrollment or while attending; in such cases, the new fees will apply. 9 Others (1) When requesting the graduate school offer requirements (as noted in this brochure) and pamphlets, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope (square No. 2, 33cm 24cm, with a 240- stamp affixed, and your name and postal code clearly written) with your application. (2) We will use personal information such as address, name, birthday, etc. only for admission selection, announcement of admissions, entrance procedures and related matters. We will strictly control personal information and will not use personal information for any other purpose.
