1 014 APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTER'S PROGRAM IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS September Enrollment Vitality) Originality Services Admission Policy With the focus on what we call the VOS concept ( Vitality, Originality and Services to society ), in order to train students to become leading international engineers and researchers with practical and creative capacity, we provide an educational system whose curriculum integrates the undergraduate and graduate levels. We invite students with the following various backgrounds: 1. students who have a strong interest in technology and science, and the basic academic ability required for it. students who are rich in humanity and have a strong sense of responsibility and sincerity. students who have a desire to contribute to society through technology and science 4. students who have a desire to tackle learning and research positively on their own initiative 5. students who have a desire to develop a new field, create a new theory and engage in productive activities. students who have a desire to display their unique strengths Fields of Study and Authorized Student Enrollments A small number of students will be accepted in each field stated below. Qualifications for Application The following qualifications are required for applicants. (A) Non-Japanese who hold a resident visa status permitting enrollment to the Graduate School under the Immigration Control and Recognition of Refugee Status Law (B) Non-Japanese who are expected to obtain the above status after enrollment in the Graduate School under the Immigration Control and Recognition of Refugee Status Law ( 8 () 8 () 1 8 (4) 1 8 (5) 1 8 Those who satisfy either (A) or (B) are further required to meet one of the following qualifications: ( Be a university graduate, or be expected to graduate by the end of August 014, in Japan. () Have successfully obtained a bachelor s degree at the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation (NIAD-UE), or be expected to do so by the end of August 014, in Japan. () Have successfully completed a 1-year course of school education abroad, or be expected to do so by the end of August 014. (4) Have completed, in Japan, the correspondence course of an overseas educational institution and completed a 1-year course of school education, or be expected to do so by the end of August 014. (5) Have successfully completed a course at an overseas educational institution in Japan which requires graduates to have completed a 1-year course in the school education system, which is deemed to have university courses in that system, and which is specifically recognized by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, or be expected to do so by the end of August

3 Selection of Field of Study Applicant must choose one field of study and research area(s) referring to "11. Fields of Study and Research Areas" on page 1. Please consult with academic staff(s) of the chosen research area(s) BEFORE application. NOTE: When choosing the field of study and the research area(s) in the fields, please refer to "Outline of Master's Program in the Graduate School of " and the university s website below; 4. Application Procedure 4.1 Application Period May 7-0, 014 *Applications must be received within this period. We have established a special full Screening Fee exemption for victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake (including evacuees from the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station). Applicants who believe that they qualify for the exemption are asked to confirm whether they fall under one of the following categories and to then call the Division of Admissions (Phone: OR ) for instructions regarding relevant procedures, before submitting their application fees. 1. Applicant or person responsible for bearing the primary burden of payment (hereinafter defrayer ) lives in a damaged area, and said person s house is completely destroyed, largely destroyed, half destroyed, or damaged by flooding above floor level.. Note that the screening fee may NOT be deposited through a post office, through Japan Post Bank or through an ATM. The commission fee associated with this payment is the responsibility of the applicant. The screening fee may be paid three weeks before the beginning of the application period. Be sure to receive the Certificate of Screening Fee Deposit (A) and the Receipt of Screening Fee Deposit (B) stamped by a bank clerk. Reply Envelope (5 10mm in size) Write the name and full mailing address of the applicant on replay envelope. Put postal stamp(s) worth yen (including express mail fee). Submission of the Application Documents Applicants should bring the documents in person or send them by mail to Division of Admissions. Use registered express mail or international courier service. Place the documents in an envelope with the size of 0 40mm, and write Application Forms for Master s Program on the top of envelope. The documents may be brought in person between 9:00 and 17:00 during the application period. 10

6 Screening / Examination Procedures The applicants will be judged on three components: oral examination, interview, and the application documents. The applicants will be invited for oral examination and interview conducted in either Japanese or English. In Nuclear System Safety, applicants from overseas may be exempted from coming to the university for the examination, subject to the approval of our graduate school. In such cases, applicants may be required to provide alternate evidence of their academic ability. 5.1 Oral Examination Basic knowledge in the applicant s field of study will be examined by faculty members of the department. In some cases, an applicant may be required to present a supplementary explanation in written form. Test subjects are listed in the following table. 5. Communication & Information, Power, and Solid State Physics Applicants should choose one area from the following list: - Physical Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry - Organic Chemistry (including Polymer Chemistry) - Materials Science (including Metallurgy) Applicants should choose two areas from the following list: - Structural - Concrete - Geotechnical - Hydraulic - Infrastructure Planning and Management Applicants should choose two areas from the following list: - Environmental Remote Sensing - Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Dynamics - Environmental Biochemistry - Water Environmental Protection - Solid and Hazardous Waste Management - Materials Science and (Mechanical Properties of Materials are excluded) - Transportation Planning - City Planning Applicants will be asked questions in their selected research area. Basic knowledge of bioscience and biotechnology will also be examined. Applicants will be asked questions about in their selected research area. Successful applicants will also receive formal notification of admission by mail. The success rate for graduate school admission will be displayed on the university s website: No inquiry will be accepted by telephone or other means. 8. Applicants who have received notification of admission need to fill out and submit documents that are included in the enrollment procedure information. They are also required to pay the admission fee and tuition. ( Admission fee: 8,000 yen (not refundable for any reason) () Tuition: 55,800 yen per year Students must pay a part of the tuition at the time of enrollment (44,50 yen for the month of September). The remaining tuition (7,900 yen for the remainder of the academic year) may be paid either at the time of enrollment or in November. In the event that the tuition is revised, the revised tuition fee will be applied ( () () Distribution of the Application Form To request the application forms by mail, mail a self-addressed return envelope (0 40mm) with stamp(s) worth 90 yen for regular mail, worth 70 yen for express mail, to Division of Admissions. Write Request for Application Form for the Master's Program, International Students, September Enrollment. Please note that that, due to an increase in postage fees, delivery charges will be raised from 90 yen to 400yen and from 70yen to 780 yen as of April, 014. Please enclose six International Reply Coupons instead of attaching stamp(s) on the returning envelope if living overseas. 10.
