4 5 Lighting Lighting There are huge dollar savings hidden in your inefficient lighting. Energy-efficient equipment, effective controls and a well-planned design can result not only in energy savings, but increases in productivity, aesthetics and safety. Linear fluorescents Fluorescent tube lighting is a great way to light up large spaces, but not all fluorescents are created equal. Energy-efficient T8 lamps are up to 40% more efficient than old, inefficient T12 lamps. Bonus they also reduce eyestrain and render colors closer to natural light. High bay Lighting in warehouse, retail, manufacturing and industrial environments with ceiling heights greater than 20 feet is a particular challenge. Replacing outdated High Intensity Discharge (HID) fixtures with specially designed T8 or T5 fixtures can have a simple payback as little as two to four years. Induction Induction lighting is essentially a fluorescent light without electrodes or filaments, the parts that often cause fluorescent bulbs to burn out. With an average rated life of 100,000 hours (that s 11+ years, operating 24 hours per day) it s a great solution where accessibility to change the lamp is a challenge. Do you have T12 lighting? The simplest way to tell if you have T12 lighting in your facility is to look at the end of a fluorescent tube. If it s 1 1/2 inch in diameter, it is likely an inefficient T12 lamp. T12 1 1/2 T8 1 Lighting controls Even energy-efficient lighting saves money when turned off! Adding lighting controls increases the flexibility of your lighting plan. CFLs and LEDs Easy energy savings: count up the number of screw-in bulbs in your office, break room, restrooms and storage areas. Consider the savings for one bulb. And there are a lot of them in schools, factories and office buildings. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are more than 100 million exit signs in the U.S., consuming 30-35 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity annually. LED traffic lights LED traffic lights use approximately 90% less energy than their incandescent counterparts, but that s just one advantage. Because they last so long, maintenance costs are reduced by 75%. This results in a simple payback as short as one to three years. Find details on page 3. Now our rebates include ductwork insulation, repair and sealing. Duct insulation You re paying to heat or cool the air that runs through the ductwork. Up to 30% of your energy can be lost if your ductwork is not insulated. Insulating ductwork is especially important if the ducts run through unconditioned spaces. The air running through the ducts can be warmed or cooled by the air temperature of the spaces the ducts run through. See all the rebates for insulation and air sealing on page 24. Duct repair and sealing Did you know up to 20% of your conditioned air could be leaking through your ducts? The result is higher energy bills and difficulty keeping your business comfortable. Stop duct leaks by repairing and sealing your ducts. Chiller pipe insulation Do you have piping in unconditioned spaces? Adding insulation on chiller pipes keeps the temperature of the water running through the pipes cooler improving the system s efficiency. Plus, it can control condensation on the pipes. Boiler vent damper Improve gas boiler efficiency with a boiler vent damper. It keeps cold air out and warm air in. The damper automatically allows the boiler to exhaust properly during operation, but prevents conditioned air from leaving your business. ECM furnace motor Electronically commutated motors (ECM) deliver multiple advantages. They run cooler and quieter and require less maintenance over a longer lifespan. All while using up to 50% less energy compared to induction motors. Heating and cooling rebate details available on page 22-23

10 11 Refrigeration Keeping it cool Walk-in strip curtains Rebates on refrigeration equipment just got easier! Previously, refrigeration rebates were available only through our Custom Rebate program, but starting in 2014 we re offering standard rebates on the most popular refrigeration equipment. Anti-sweat heater controls It s low-tech, easy to install, uses no energy to operate, and yet continuously saves you energy and money. What is it? It s the strip curtain on your walk-in refrigerator or freezer. By keeping dry, cold air in, and warm, moist air out, strip curtains lower electric bills and extend product life. In addition to saving energy, they help keep out dust, debris and bugs! Opening between the strip curtain and bottom of doorway must be no larger than one inch. Strips must have an overlay greater than one inch. Walk-in evaporator fan controllers Evaporator fans typically run at normal speed all the time, regardless of demand. An evaporator fan controller will automatically adjust fan speed, allowing for energy savings without an impact on the overall temperature of the cooler or freezer. Must reduce fan motor power by at least 75% when the compressor(s) cycle off. Refrigerated glass display cases use anti-sweat heaters to prevent moisture from forming on their glass and frames. Most typically operate non-stop 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, even when conditions don t require it. That can add up to as much as $200 per year per door in energy costs! Adding anti-sweat heater controls saves you energy and money, in the range of 70% to 90%. Controls must automatically reduce energy consumption of the anti-sweat heaters by at least 50%. Electronically commutated motors for refrigerated display cases and walk-ins Evaporator units, each with a small fan motor are integral components of walk-in refrigerators and freezers. Though each motor is small, when considered together and running continuously, the energy consumption is considerable. Installation of Electronically Commutated Motors (ECMs) can significantly reduce energy consumption and your energy bill. Must replace shaded-pole or permanent-split capacitor evaporator fan motors. Scroll compressors Scroll compressors not only use less energy, but have significantly fewer moving parts, resulting in superior performance, lower maintenance cost and greater reliability. Must replace reciprocating compressor. Display case night covers Leaving display coolers uncovered at night can waste a lot of energy. Using night covers on display coolers lowers heating and air conditioning costs overnight. Just keep things undercover while the store is closed. 12 13 Food service equipment Water heating Rebates on everything but the kitchen sink Alliant Energy s food service rebates aren t just for restaurants! Schools, grocery and convenience stores, community centers and churches any place there s food service preparation, there s potential for energy savings. Whether you re serving up school lunches or dinner at a five-star restaurant, it s an energy-intensive business. In fact, according to ENERGY STAR, the annual cost to operate a single gas or electric fryer is often more than the annual utility bill of an average home. Red-hot rebates Investing in new ENERGY STAR qualified cooking equipment could save you up to 30% on energy costs. Alliant Energy rebates range from $500 to $1,500 help you make the upgrade on cooking equipment including: Broilers Fryers Griddles Steam cookers Convection ovens Conveyor ovens Rotisserie ovens Rotating rack ovens Does your business use a lot of water? Water heating can be a large expense for many businesses. How large? It s typically the second biggest energy user, right behind heating and cooling. Saving energy can help your bottom line. Drain water heat transfer system Use the water you ve already paid to heat to preheat more hot water. Drain water heat recovery systems can recover heat from the hot water used in showers, dishwashers and clothes washers. Swimming pool covers Don t let your energy dollars swim away. Save up to 70% on heating costs by using a pool cover. Pool covers reduce heat loss and water evaporation and save you money. Spa and hot tub covers Relax, we ve got you covered, with a rebate that is. A well-insulated spa or hot tub cover traps in the warmth of your hot tub or spa and reduces water evaporation. Water heaters Use of a high efficiency water heater can cut your costs up to half, according to ENERGY STAR. Check out our water heating rebates on page 24. On the cooler side Alliant Energy can also help you to keep things cool with rebates on all sizes of new solid and glass door refrigerators and freezers. Cleaning up Serving all those delicious meals can result in a mountain of dirty dishes, pots and pans. Not to mention silverware! Alliant Energy helps you clean up for less with new commercial dishwasher rebates of $125 to $250. There are rebates on new commercial clothes washers too for all those aprons, towels and uniforms. 14 15 Commercial New Construction Plan ahead to maximize Alliant Energy s Commercial New Construction program provides complimentary energy design assistance and financial incentives to help offset the cost of implementing energy efficient strategies. The program is available to businesses that have new construction, additions or renovation projects before the design phase. A customized energy model simulates energy use for your project, demonstrating which strategies have the greatest impact and which are the most cost effective. Strategies are then selected by the building owner and the design team, assisted by the energy design consultant. Systems available for energy modeling include: Motors Energy-efficient motors pay for themselves The extra cost of an energy-efficient motor is often quickly repaid in energy savings especially when you factor in a rebate from Alliant Energy. Lower operating and maintenance costs coupled with relatively short payback periods make efficient motors a sound business investment. Industrial electric motors represent the single largest end use of electricity in the United States. The Department of Energy recently estimated that 25% of the electricity sold is consumed by industrial electric motors used to power production processes and heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Custom Rebate projects must be pre-approved by Alliant Energy, so before making a commitment to proceed with a project call 1-866-ALLIANT to get started. Appliance Recycling Let us do the heavy lifting. If you have a working refrigerator, freezer or room air conditioner you don t need, give us a call! We ll send a recycling contractor to pick up and dispose of your old appliance properly and we ll give you a check for that appliance.
