Large Item Pick Up Program: Curbside collection of four large household items. Green Cart: Foods scraps and yard trimmings recycling. Blue Box/Cart: Recycling of spiral wound containers, aerosol cans, plastic/paper drink cups and flower pots, paper and newsprint, glass, rigid plastic containers, and tin and aluminium containers. City Garbage Collection: Garbage collection, not including banned items such as hazardous waste and materials that can be recycled. Extra Garbage Disposal: Garbage tags and vouchers for sale to dispose of additional garbage or large items. Recycling Depot: Collection site for Styrofoam, small/large appliances, batteries, cell phones, plastic bags and overwrap, etc. Home Composting: Sale of residential compost bins at the Recycling Depot, a composting demonstration garden and related workshops. FOOD SCRAPS AND YARD TRIMMINGS RECYCLING FOOD SCRAPS NOT ALLOWED IN GARBAGE Starting in 2015, food scraps are banned from the garbage which means they must be recycled or composted. Richmond s convenient options to recycle food scraps and yard trimmings include the Green Cart program, home composting (bins available at Recycling Depot) and garden and yard trimmings drop-off services at the Recycling Depot and Ecowaste. Green Cart is currently provided to residents in single-family homes and townhomes with City garbage and/or Blue Box service. Most single-family homes have the Large size (240 litres) and townhomes have the Compact size (46.5 litres). If you would like to exchange your current Green Cart for a different size, please contact 604-276-4010. The cost to exchange a Green Cart is $25. If you require a new Green Cart, either due to loss, damage or you are a new resident and your Richmond home does not have a Green Cart, please call 604-276-4010. CURBSIDE COLLECTION FOR LARGE HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Richmond s Large Item Pick Up program provides a convenient curbside collection service for up to four large household items per year, including mattresses, furniture and appliances. This program is designed to make it more convenient to dispose of large household items and to help reduce illegal dumping. As well, through this program, large household items that can be recycled will be diverted from the landfill, which will help Richmond achieve its goal for 80% waste diversion from the landfill by 2020. Large Item Pick Up is currently provided to residents in single-family homes and townhomes with City garbage and/or Blue Box service. STEPS ON HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS: 1 2 To schedule collection of up to four items per year, residents can contact the City s service provider, Sierra Waste Services at 604-270-4722 or schedule online at www.richmond.ca/recycle. Sierra Waste Services will contact you to provide a pick up date and confi rmation number. WHAT S ACCEPTED AND NOT ACCEPTED? ACCEPTED Furniture (couches, coffee tables, chairs, desks, dressers, TV stands, cabinets, drawers, tables, hutches, cribs, high chairs, entertainment centers) Appliances (stoves, dishwashers, washers and/or dryers, hot water tanks, refrigerators, freezers, microwaves) Electric lawnmowers NOT ACCEPTED Small household goods, provided they are boxed or bundled and are a reasonable size (one box or bundle is equal to one of the resident s four allotted items) Barbecues (remove lava rock briquettes and/or propane tank) Mattresses (including headboard & frame) Outdoor furniture (chairs, patio tables, patio umbrellas) Weight training equipment (treadmills, ellipticals,stationary bikes, stair masters, weight sets) Note: The item(s) must be able to be safely handled from curbside in order to qualify for collection. To ensure your mattress and cloth furniture can be handled safely, please ensure they are kept dry and mould-free by covering it in a plastic bag. Reuse the bag from newly-purchased furniture or purchase bags from home hardware and supply stores. If your household item is not listed, contact Sierra Waste Services at 604-270-4722 to see if it is accepted for collection. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS For safety reasons, if the large item is a freezer, refrigerator, icebox or other container that is equipped with a latch or locking device, the door/latch must be removed and placed beside the large item. Mattresses and cloth furniture must be wrapped in plastic to avoid items becoming water-logged and too heavy for collectors to lift. DID YOU KNOW? Wet mattresses cannot be recycled and pose safety hazards for lifting, which is why you need to cover your mattresses in plastic before placing them at the curb for pick up.

CITY GARBAGE COLLECTION STANDARDS Weekly curbside collection of garbage and recycling is provided to residents in single-family homes and some townhomes. Please use the following tips to help make sure your garbage can be picked up weekly. For townhomes with private garbage collection, this information may not apply. Please contact your building property manager for information.!!! TWO-CAN LIMIT Up to two, 100 L containers or bags per household, accepted per week. Residents are required to provide their own garbage containers. Maximum bag size is 30 inches (76 cm) x 48 inches (120 cm). GARBAGE PICK UP Place garbage and recycling at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day, but no earlier than 8:00 p.m. the night before. ADDITIONAL GARBAGE Garbage Tags: $2 each for each additional garbage bag/can. Garbage Disposal Voucher: $5 each, value up to $20 at the Vancouver Landfi ll. Use to dispose of items such as dirt, rocks, construction or demolition materials. Garbage Tags and Garbage Disposal Vouchers are available for purchase at all City facilities including City Hall, Recycling Depot, Community Centres and Libraries. WHAT GOES IN THE GARBAGE? NOT MUCH! The more we recycle, the less we need to throw into the garbage. The following are examples of the few remaining household items that go into the garbage: Diapers & baby wipes Plastic cutlery Broken ceramics & glass Chip bags and Plastic cling wrap candy wrappers *There are also some hazardous materials and other household items that must be taken to drop-off locations for safe disposal. See the Tips and Resources tab for more information. FUTURE OUTLOOK Richmond s goal is to reduce garbage by 80% by 2020. The City is conducting a garbage cart pilot program to evaluate options for city-provided garbage carts. The City is testing preferences for garbage collection frequency and cart size options with a goal to improve service while promoting increased recycling. The City will use feedback from residents and data on garbage and recycling output as well as overall program performance to make recommendations for a city-wide garbage cart program for single-family homes and some townhomes. BLUE BOX & BLUE CART RECYCLING Richmond s Blue Box and Blue Cart programs make it easy and convenient to recycle paper products, aerosol cans, spiral wound containers, milk cartons, plastic/paper drink cups, glass, aluminium, tin and rigid plastic containers. These recyclable materials are banned at the landfill, which means they are not permitted in the garbage. WHAT GOES WHERE: All newsprint and paper items are combined into a yellow Mixed Paper Recycling Bag or Mixed Paper Recycling Cart 30.5cm 30.5cm Glass jars & bottles are now separated into the grey Glass Recycling Bin or Glass Recycling Cart Plastic bottles, tin & aluminium cans plus many other recyclable items go in your Blue Box or Containers Recycling Cart 7:30 a.m. HOW TO GET REPLACEMENT BOXES AND BAGS There is no charge for new or replacement Blue Boxes, Mixed Paper Recycling Bags, Glass Recycling Bins and Blue Cart Indoor Collection Bags. Boxes and bags are available for pick up at the City Recycling Depot or City Hall. RECYCLING DEPOT - 5555 LYNAS LANE CONVENIENT AND CLOSE TO HOME Richmond s Recycling Depot is ideal for recycling and drop off of items like large and small appliances, paint and solvents and other materials banned from the landfi ll. The City is continually expanding the range of materials we collect at our Depot. This year we ve added coloured Styrofoam, aerosol and spiral wound cans, plastic bags and over wrap. The barrels require a water diverter unit to hook up to the downspout of the water runoff from the roof. Water Diverters are available for purchase at hardware supply stores. Compost Bins: Available to residents at a reduced price of $25 plus tax. 3 Garbage Disposal Vouchers & Tags: - $2 Garbage Tags: May be purchased to help dispose of additional waste for curbside collection. One Garbage Tag must be present on each additional garbage can or bag. - $5 Garbage Disposal Voucher: Value for up to $20 in disposal charge at the Vancouver Landfill and are valid during their regular operating hours. Limit one per household per year. DID YOU KNOW? Food scraps, oils and grease should never be disposed down sinks, drains or garburators as the material hardens and builds up on the inside of sewage lines, causing blockages. This can lead to breaks and sewage spills or overfl ows. Recycle food scraps and grease solids in your Green Can/Cart, and take used cooking oils and liquid fats in a sealed container to the Recycling Depot. RECYCLING DEPOT

Richmond sends recycled food scraps and yard trimmings to Harvest Power, where these recyclable materials are composted and turned into nutrient-rich compost and soil blends used by farmers, gardeners and landscapers. Harvest Power also uses anaerobic digestion to harness biogas from food scraps, which is turned into clean, local electricity. Composted soil is available for sale from Harvest (harvestpower.com/bc or 604-270-7500) and through local dealers. Note: Residents need to purchase a minimum of 2 cubic yards if they d like to buy composted soil directly from Harvest Power (material available in bulk form only). HAZARDOUS WASTE & OTHER DISPOSAL OPTIONS Hazardous household materials must be taken to drop-off depots for safe recycling or disposal. There are also a number of household items that are not accepted at curbside collection but can be recycled by taking them to local retailers and special depots. LET S REDUCE OUR FOOD WASTE! Starting in 2015, food scraps will no longer be permitted in the garbage you will need to recycle them with your Green Cart or through backyard composting. Compostable materials like foods scraps and yard trimmings still make up about 43% of the waste going to landfills from singlefamily homes and townhomes. These organic materials should not go in the garbage. Please put them in your Green Cart or backyard compost bin so they can be recycled into compost for nutrient-rich soil used in home gardens, by landscaping companies and in the farming industry.
