NOTE: DO NOT Choose "Work Offline" When you run Interactions/Gas Exchange after installation, you may get a message suggesting that an Internet connection is not available. This setting will interrupt communication with the Edugen server and the program will not function properly. Choose "Try Again" (or 'Connect'). NOTE: DO NOT 'Close' the Edugen server without exiting the course first. You may lose data from your study session. You may EXIT the Interactions/Gas Exchange program from any page in the program. When you want to exit the program, simply click on the Exit button inside the Navigation Icon Bar. This button terminates your current program session and logs you out of the program. NOTE: Notes' e-mailing function may fail to operate, especially under old versions of e-mail clients and/or operating systems. If you have trouble using this function, please copy the text from the Note window and paste it into your e-mail client in order to send your note via e-mail. System Requirements ---------------------------- Minimal configuration: * Pentium 166 or higher * 32MB RAM * 4x speed CD-ROM drive * 800x600 screen resolution, hi-color mode * Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP * Windows compatible sound card * Netscape v4.7x or Internet Explorer v5.0 or higher versions Preferred Configuration * Pentium II or higher * 64MB RAM * 16x speed CD-ROM drive * 800x600 screen resolution, hi-color mode * Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP * Windows compatible sound card * Netscape v4.7x or Internet Explorer v5.0 or higher versions NOTE: Netscape v 6.0 or above is not supported. NOTE: Interactions/Gas Exchange will run with a 640*480 screen resolution, although some important features will not fit into the program window. We recommend that you change your computer screen resolution to 800*600. NOTE: When you run Interactions/Gas Exchange animations with an 800*600 screen -1-

resolution, the taskbar on the Windows desktop can obscure the animation's control bar. To prevent this we recommend that either you set the taskbar to autohide or maximize the browser window. Program Installation Requirements: Running Interactions/Gas Exchange will require the following: Internet Explorer v5.0 or Netscape v4.7; MS Java Virtual Machine (recommended) or Sun's Java Virtual Machine; Shockwave Player. These programs can be found on the root of your CD if required. Installation and Running of the Program. Installation: 1. Insert the Interactions/Gas Exchange CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the Auto Run menu appears, click 'Install' and follow the on-screen instructions. If Auto Run is disabled or the menu does not appear, select 'Run...' from the Windows 'Start' menu (usually in the lower left corner of the screen) and type 'D:\Go' in the Open box (where D is the letter of your CD-Rom drive), and click OK to run the installation program. 2. The program will scan your hard drive to see which components you need to install and will ask you if you want to install them if they are not already installed. Therefore it may not be necessary for you to install all of the following components. 3. If you do not yet have an appropriate browser installed to view Interactions/Gas Exchange you will be given the option to install Internet Explorer V5.0. Click 'Yes' to install IE5 and follow the on-screen instructions, otherwise click 'NO' to bypass this part of the installation. 4. If you needed to install IE5 your PC will need to be restarted. Once it has restarted you can eject and then reinsert the CD tray - the Auto Run menu will again appear. Click 'Install' to continue installation. If the menu does not appear follow previous instructions as detailed in 1 above. 5. If necessary you will now be asked to install 'Microsoft Java Virtual Machine' if it has not already been installed. Click 'Yes' to install and follow the on-screen instructions. Clicking 'No' will bypass this component. After this installs you will be asked if you want to restart your computer--this is not necessary at this stage, click 'No'. If you select 'No,' please remember to restart your computer before running the Interactions/Gas Exchange program. You will again need to eject and then reinsert the CD, the Auto Run menu will again appear. Click 'Install' to continue installation and follow the on-screen instructions. If the menu does not appear follow previous instructions as detailed in 1 above. 6. You will now be asked, if required, to install Macromedia Shockwave Player. Click 'Yes' to install and follow the on-screen instructions. Clicking 'No' will bypass this component. 7. The remaining components of Interactions/Gas Exchange will now be installed. Please follow the on-screen instructions. 8. Before running the program please restart your computer. -2-

To run the program after installation: 1. Select the Windows 'Start' menu (usually in the lower left corner of the screen). Select 'Programs,' then 'Interactions,' then 'Gas Exchange,' and click on the 'Gas Exchange' icon or use the Gas Exchange shortcut to launch the program. Network Installation and Running of the Program. ------------ The Interactions/Gas Exchange CD can be used on a network by several students simultaneously. There is no limit to the maximum number of users. Server computer installation: Create a Gas Exchange folder on the network server. Make a copy of the whole Interactions/Gas Exchange CD-ROM to this folder and share this folder to make it accessible for all networked computers. Installation for all clients' computers: Open a shared Gas Exchange folder on the network server. Assign (map) a drive letter to a network Gas Exchange folder. Open the Gas Exchange folder and run the Setup.exe application. This application will install all required components. To run the program after installation: Select the Windows 'Start' menu (usually in the lower left corner of the screen). Select 'Programs,' then 'Interactions,' then 'Gas Exchange,' and click on the 'Gas Exchange' icon or use the Gas Exchange shortcut to launch the program. Brief Instructions to Begin Using your Interactions/Gas Exchange CD: --------- NOTE: DO NOT 'Close' the Edugen server without logging out of the program first. You may lose data from your study session. 1. Splash screen. - Click inside the Splash screen to go to the Login screen of the title. 2. Login screen. - If this is the first time you are using the program, click on the 'New User Registration' button to go to the New User Registration screen. - Otherwise enter 'User Name' and 'Password' and then click on the 'Login' button to enter the program. 3. New User Registration screen. - Fill in all the fields and click on the 'Submit' button to complete registration. When the Login screen re-appears, type your User Name and Password, and then click on the 'Login' button. 4. Content List. - Click on the 'Contents' button on the Navigation toolbar to show the Content List. Use the Content List to navigate through all the parts of the program. 5. Navigation toolbar. - Click on the Wiley logo to go to Wiley Web site dedicated to anatomy and physiology at www.wiley.com/college/apcentral. -3-

- Click on the 'Contents' button to show the Content List. - Click on the 'Help' button to bring up help. - Click on the 'Bookmark' button to place a bookmark on the current content item. The bookmark placed is displayed as a small icon on the top-right corner of the appropriate content page. - Click on the 'Notes' button to open a Notes window. - Click on the 'Search' button to get a search window where you can accomplish a full-text search through the given chapter. Type a word (or two with appropriate criteria), click on 'Search', then choose a link in the list (or double click the line) and click 'View". - Click on the 'Browse' button to get a window where you can find the main navigation items of the program. - Click on the 'Concepts' button to show a picture list of all the "Concepts and Connections". - Click on the 'Shows' button to open the Show window and create your own presentation. - Click on the 'WWW' button to open a window where you can enter your course URL and link directly to it by clicking on the 'Go' button. - The 'Exit' button exits the program. - The 'Prev / Next' buttons allow you to go through content pages. ------------------------------- TROUBLESHOOTING AND OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS TCP-IP Protocol: TCP/IP is the underlying communication protocol for the Internet. Your Interactions/Gas Exchange CD uses this protocol and cannot function properly on a system without TCP/IP support. Interactions/Gas Exchange Setup checks for the presence of TCP/IP and displays a warning message if it is not present. If you have an Internet Service provider to allow you to send email and browse the Internet, then TCP/IP should be set up already. The installation requires Windows' set-up CD-ROM. --------------------------------- a) TCP/IP Set-Up in Windows'95/98 1. Choose 'Network' from START/Settings/Control Panel. 2. Click on the 'Add' button. This will bring up the 'Select Network Component Type' dialog. Choose 'Protocol' from the list and click 'Add...' 3. In the new dialog 'Select Network Protocol' choose 'Microsoft' and 'TCP/IP'. Click 'OK'. 4. An updated 'Network' dialog will appear. From the drop-down menu 'Primary Network Logon' choose 'Windows Logon' and click 'OK'. 5. Restart the machine if required. b) TCP/IP Set-Up in Windows Millennium 1. Right-click on the 'My Network Places' icon and choose the Properties command. 2. Click on the 'Add' button. This will bring up the 'Select Network Component Type' dialog. Choose 'Protocol' from the list and click on 'Add...' -4-

3. In the new dialog 'Select Network Protocol' choose 'Microsoft' and 'TCP/IP'. Click 'OK'. 4. An updated 'Network' dialog will appear. From the drop-down menu 'Primary Network Logon' choose 'Windows Logon' and click 'OK'. 5. Restart the machine if required. c) TCP/IP Set-Up in Windows NT 4.0 (if network is not installed) 1. Start the Network applet from the Control Panel. 2. If the question 'Windows Networking is not installed. Do you want to install now?' appears, answer 'No'. 3. Choose 'Protocols' bookmark; click on the 'Add...' button. 4. Choose 'TCP/IP Protocol' and click 'Ok'. 5. Answer 'No' for the question 'Do you wish to use DHCP?' 6. Indicate the path to files with Windows NT distribution; click on the 'Continue' button. 7. When all the files have been copied, click on 'Close'. 8. Choose 'Ignore' when the 'Noncritical Error' appears. 9. Answer 'No' when the 'Restart Computer' suggestion appears. 10. Start the 'Services' applet from the Control Panel. 11. Choose 'TCP/IP Netbios Helper' service from the list. 12. Click on the 'Startup...' button. 13. Choose 'Manual' Startup Type. 14. Click 'Ok'. 15. Click 'Close'. 16. Start the 'Devices' applet from the Control Panel. 17. Choose 'WINS Client (TCP/IP)' service from the list. 18. Click on the 'Startup...' button. 19. Choose 'Manual' Startup Type. 20. Click 'Ok'. 21. Click 'Close'. 22. Restart your computer. d) TCP/IP Set-Up in Windows NT 4.0 (when network is available) 1. Start the Network applet from the Control Panel. 2. Choose the 'Protocols' bookmark; click on the 'Add...' button. 3. Choose 'TCP/IP Protocol' and click 'Ok'. 4. When the question 'Do you wish to use DHCP?' appears, answer 'Yes'. 5. Indicate the path to files with Windows NT distribution, then click 'Continue'. 6. Choose the 'Bindings' bookmark. In the combo box choose 'all protocols'. 7. Open 'TCP/IP Protocol' item. 8. One by one select all the adapters in the list below 'TCP/IP Protocol' and click the 'Disable' button for each of them. 9. Click 'Close'. 10. When the 'Restart Computer' suggestion appears, answer 'Yes'. e) TCP/IP Set-Up in Windows 2000-5-

1. Open the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder (Start/Settings/Network and Dial-Up Connections). 2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and choose the Properties command. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears. 3. Click on the 'Install ' button. The Select Network Component Type dialog box appears. Select Protocol and click on the 'Add ' button. 4. The Select Network Protocol dialog box appears. Choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on the 'OK' button. 5. If prompted, insert your Windows 2000 CD and click 'OK'. 6. Click on the Close button in the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. Browser's Security Level Some pages may cause an error message if the security settings of your Internet browser are set to HIGH. It is recommended to set the security level to MEDIUM while running the program. Internet Explorer 5: 1. Choose the 'Security' tab from the menu Tools/Internet Options. 2. Select 'Trusted sites' as a Web content zone. 3. Click 'Sites...' 4. Uncheck 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone'. 5. Type 'localhost' in the 'Add this Web site to the zone' field and click the 'Add' button. 6. Click 'OK'. 7. Set slider 'Security level for this zone' to Low. 8. Click 'OK'. Switching Between Browsers If both Internet Explore V5.0 and Netscape V4.7 are installed on your system it is possible to switch the program to use the one of your choice. To do this: 1. The Interactions/Gas Exchange program will need to be running. Restore the Edugen server, which will be minimized on your task bar (usually at the bottom of the screen). To do this, right click on the Edugen item and choose 'Select'. 2. Choose your preferred browser and click OK. 3. Shut down Interactions/Gas Exchange and restart to select the new browser. 4. So that your new browser displays the program correctly it may be necessary to install the following components again: MS Java Machine and Shockwave Player. These programs can be found on the root of your CD if required.
