Our Mission The mission of the Smart Love Family Services is to help children, parents and adults achieve greater inner well-being, sustain closer relationships, and lead more pleasurable and productive lives. s m a r t lov e The principles of Smart Love, an approach to parenting and child development developed by Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D., and William J. Pieper, M.D., guide all of our programs. Endorsed by scholars and child development experts around the world and supported by the latest child development research, the Smart Love approach focuses parents attention on maximizing parent s positive influence on the child by understanding their child s mind and emotions at every age and stage. One of the cornerstones of the Smart Love approach is that every young child copies the care she receives but cannot evaluate it. For this reason, informed accurate parenting, teaching and caregiving are crucial if children are to grow up treating themselves and others with compassion and if they are to develop the ability to care for their bodies, work productively, have stable inner happiness, and sustain enjoyable relationships. Programs and interventions based on Smart Love principles promote closer, more enjoyable caregiver and child relationships and increase success and confidence for both caregiver and child. Smart Love (1999) describes the application of the Pieper s approach to parenting. The underlying psychological theory is described in Intrapsychic Humanism (1990), is the Piepers book for professionals. Smart Love is a registered trademark.
F r o m t h e E x e c u t i v e D i r e c to r Dear Friends: As we begin our 9th year, we have many achievements to celebrate. The most exciting new development is the dedication of The Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool. Located in a historic mansion on Chicago s north side, the preschool includes two classrooms, a parent and tot play space, a children s library, a school garden within an expansive enclosed yard ideal for running and romping as well as quite walks through the specially designed nature path. We have capacity for 80 children in morning and afternoon half day programs as well as 60 families in Toddler Explorations, our parent and tot program for toddlers 12 to 36 months. This location is also home to our Chicago clinic and executive offices. Our clinical program continued to expand to serving 355 clients. We were able to offer over $50,000 in charity care to families unable to afford services. We also launched a new clinical training program to train both psychology and social work graduate students in our therapeutic approach, Inner Humanism. Our parenting and consulting services also continued to grow, building on our many years of focus in this area. We continued to work with professional staff at Children s Memorial Hospital in ways to extend the Smart Love approach into areas of the hospital. Additionally a new avenue opened up for us when the American Medical Association asked us to develop a continuing education program for physicians on how to help their patients make healthy lifestyle choices. We could not have attained this kind of success without a generous and growing group of donors as well as our extraordinary board of directors and staff. I would also like to thank Vedder Price and Menomonee Club for their very generous inkind gifts. Thank you all for making a difference. Sincerely Carolyn Stolper Friedman, M.A. Executive Director G R O W I N G
w h e r e w e a r e to day Dedicated First Preschool Built on Smart Love Principles: We dedicated The Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool in October 2010. The preschool will also house Toddler Explorations, our program for toddlers and their parents. Additional programs for parents of infants will also be offered Counseling Services We offer psychological counseling for children, adolescents, parents, couples and adults in the Rush Medical Office Building in Oak Park, IL and in new offices at 800 W. Buena Avenue in Chicago. We provide play therapy, individual therapy, parent counseling, couples therapy, diagnostic evaluations and psychological and neuropsychological testing. Services for Parents Parent education seminars: This past year, we presented to parents and professionals on topics such as sibling rivalry, healthy sleep habits, self-esteem and managing children s behavior. Parent Coaching: We also offered over 50 private coaching sessions and infant sleep consultations for parents wanting to understand their children s behavior and how best to respond. Publications for parents: We published a new addition of Parenting Questions- Smart Love Answers called Smart Love Solutions in Early Childhood. This new book is available on Amazon Kindle as well as in hard copy on Amazon. Consulting and Training Services for Professionals, Schools and Agencies With the generous support of Polk Bros. Foundation, we launched a year-long training and consultation initiative for family support staff at Children s Memorial Hospital. Through consulting contracts we trained clinicians at PCC Wellness and continued our work with the staff at Easter Seals Near South Side Early Head Start program.
I n O u r F u t u r e Expanding Smart Love Preschools With the recent opening of The Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool, we are working to expand enrollment as well as planning additional preschools in Chicago and nationally. Providing Charity Care for Disadvantaged Families: We continue to seek opportunities to provide sustainable charity care for disadvantaged families. Private support from foundations, corporations and individuals allow us to offer scholarships to cover gaps in insurance coverage as well as to those that come to us unable to afford the full fees. Developing Online Program Offerings for Parents We will continue to bring Smart Love to a broader audience through new online program offerings, presentations at national conferences serving the mental health, parenting, and early childhood fields and through radio, television and print media. Training Clinicians and Early Childhood Teachers: We wish to provide a setting where student clinicians and experienced professionals learn to practice both the Smart Love approach and Inner Humanism, our psychotherapy approach. Additionally, we are planning a teacher institute to train early childhood teachers using Smart Love principles. Establishing a Research and Evaluation Capability: We are building a research and evaluation function within our organization in order to improve our services to serve better the needs of families. We also plan to add to the evidence that will encourage others to adopt our very effective approach. c a r I N G
