1 LOCATOR: 3.01 TITLE: School Psychologist QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid Connecticut certification with endorsement as psychologist. 2. REPORTS TO: JOB GOALS: Pupil Services Director To help improve the educational experience and general wellbeing of those students who are unable to profit from the existing school program. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Evaluation: 1. Participates on child study meetings and Planning and Placement Team meetings, and makes recommendations for interventions and/or further study. 2. Observes children in the classroom when needed. 3. Obtains, analyzes and interprets background observational and personal data pertinent to the referral problem. 4. Selects and administers appropriate diagnostic psychological tests, scores and analyzes the data, and writes reports from the information. 5. Interprets and shares diagnostic results with teachers, involved specialists, administrators and parents. When appropriate shares this information with outside agencies or professionals. 6. Re-evaluates special education students on a triennial basis when requested. B. Consultation: 1. Provides psychological consultation to students, parents, teachers, administrators and other school personnel, as well as members of community agencies. Content of these consultations may include, but is not limited to the following: a. Assistance in the planning of educational programs from a psychological perspective. b. Enhancement of the understanding of individual students' needs and perspectives. c. Modification of instructional programs to facilitate learning. d. Promotion of a positive climate for learning and teaching. e. Provision of home-management techniques of students. 1 of 2

2 LOCATOR: 3.01 f. Provision of classroom strategies for individuals and groups of students. g. Provision of psycho-educational/prescriptions for individuals and groups h. Assistance in the development and modification of curriculum both in general and special education, as it relates to students' cognitive and other psychological processes. 2. Assist with in-service training for school personnel. C. Counseling: 1. Provide a range of psychological intervention procedures to facilitate learning, social-emotional adjustment, and adaptive school behaviors to students having school related problems. The counseling services may include the following: a. Psychological counseling of individuals and groups of students. b. Psychological counseling with parent and/or other family members as it relates to school issues. c. Crisis intervention. d. Behavioral management. e. Parent workshops. D. Research: Participates in research as appropriate. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and working conditions established by the WEA/Board contract. Work year established by the Board. 3 TITLE: School Social Worker LOCATOR: 3.02 QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Master of Social Work Degree with valid Connecticut certification in school social work. 2. Knowledge of child and adolescent development. 3. Teaching experience desirable. 4. Background/experience in clinical social work. 5. Ability to use and integrate technology in the management of performance responsibilities. 6. Ability to effectively communicate and work successfully with students, staff and parents. REPORTS TO: JOB GOAL: Pupil Services Director To help students resolve such personal, emotional, and social problems as interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered them. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Conducts structured goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of groups of children. Themes include academic skill building, social skill development, anger management, conflict resolution, family issues and making healthy choices. 2. Assists parents in addressing school related problems and issues. Refers students and their parents, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs and/or outside agencies. 3. Consults and collaborates with other school personnel and parents in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the student s behavior. 4. Supervises the referral of students, and serves as liaison with, such outside agencies as the welfare department, child placement bureau, juvenile court, and the like, as appropriate. 5. Makes home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on a student s background and completing social histories. 6. Serves as liaison between home and school when considerable follow-up is necessary, as in welfare cases, foster home children, and disadvantaged students. 7. Assists student directly toward adjustments to school. Works directly with students and provides individual or small group counseling to promote student adjustment to school 1 of 2

4 LOCATOR: Keeps sufficient records of cases for use by school staff members, and outside agencies when appropriate. 9. Works cooperatively with staff members to improve student adjustment and achievement. 10. Provides for crises intervention. 11. Serves as a member of Planning and Placement Teams when requested and carries out the responsibilities agreed upon by the PPT. 12. Develops and implements systematic transition activities for students eighth grade to high school. 13. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. 14. Assumes responsibility for personal professional growth. Adheres to the ethical standards and preferred practices of state and national school social work associations. 15. Performs other duties as assigned by the Pupil Services Director. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: EVALUATION: Salary and working conditions established by the WEA/Board contract. 5 LOCATOR: 3.03 TITLE: QUALIFICATIONS: REPORTS TO: JOB GOALS: Nurse 1. Registered professional nurse. 2. At least the equivalent of one year full time working experience as a registered nurse within 5 years immediately prior to em-ployment. 3. Ability to work successfully with staff, students, and parents. Building Principal To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students. 2. Under doctors' directions and parental written permission, stores and dispenses medication to students requiring them. 3. Conducts health service screenings, i.e. vision, hearing, color, scoliosis, height and weight. 4. Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. 5. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness. 6. Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care. 7. Prepares reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters, as requested. 8. Visits student homes when necessary. 9. Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health program. 10. Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students. 11. Implements Board policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. 1 of 2

6 LOCATOR: Makes recommendations to school physician on health needs of individual students. 13. Prepares and submits reports as designated by the administration and State Board of Health. 14. Advises staff on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects. 15. Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools. 16. Attends committee meetings (including child study meetings and IEP s) and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum, as requested. 17. Maintains professional growth. 18. Implements medical orders from the town physician for carrying out employee health screening/vaccination series. 19. Performs other duties as requested by the principal or superintendent. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten months per year. Salary established by the WESS/Board contract. Work year established by the superintendent. 2 of 2

7 LOCATOR: 3.04 TITLE: Speech and Hearing Clinician QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid and appropriate Connecticut certification. 2. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: JOB GOALS: Building Principal To help reduce or eliminate the effects of language, speech, and/ or hearing disorders that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement. 2. Provides a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of children with language, speech, and/or hearing disorders. 3. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments. 4. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, hearing, and language disorders. 5. Provides screening to identify communicatively handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels. 6. Assists in referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate. 7. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy program in the school setting. 8. Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate. 9. Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement, language development, and hearing habitation. 10. Keeps thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech/language services. 1 of 2

8 LOCATOR: Maintains lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services. 12. Compiles case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate. 13. Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies. 14. Prepares and administers the annual budget for speech therapy services. 15. Assumes responsibility for personal professional growth and strives to improve professional competence. 16. Performs such other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the administration. 9 LOCATOR: 3.05 TITLE: School Counselor QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Hold a master s degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university. 2. Meet the certification requirements for initial educator or higher from the Connecticut State Department of Education. 3. Ability to work successfully with students, staff and parents. REPORTS TO: JOB GOAL: Building Principal 1. Develop and deliver the school counseling curriculum in a classroom setting. 2. Assist students in the areas of academic and career planning and in social/emotional development. 3. Provide individual and small group counseling in a variety of settings. 4. Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting. 5. Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists. 6. Participate in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school. 7. Plan, evaluate and revise the school counseling program. 8. Pursue continuous professional growth to stay abreast of the field. 9. Promote an understanding and appreciation of diverse populations and cultures. 10. Monitor and advise students and their parents as to progress toward promotion/graduation. 11. Prepare students for the transition to the next level: middle school, high school and post high school activities. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Counseling 1. Provide individual planning sessions to students in the areas of academic planning and success, career awareness and social/emotional development in accordance with planned objectives for grade level. 2. Assist in the transition to middle school, high school and to post high school options. Interpret tests, student data and other assessment results appropriately in the counseling environment. 4. 10 B. Consulting 1. Provide information and skills to parents, school staff, administration and the community to assist them in helping students in academic, career and social development. 2. Take a leadership role in the infusion of counseling content into the curriculum, staff development and parent education programs. 3. Assist parents in addressing school related problems and issues. Refer students and their parents, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs and/or outside agencies. 4. Inform students and their parents as to pertinent test results and their implications for educational and career planning. C. Coordinating 1. Promote the liaison and coordination of school activities and resources and communicate between and among home, school, community agencies and business and industry. 2. Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all services. 3. Coordinate programs such as career and college fairs, scholarships, and other counseling curriculum. 4. Coordinate parent education programs and assist students in making a smooth transition from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school. D. Curriculum Management 1. Design, deliver, evaluate and revise a planned sequential and developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum to include lessons in academic success, career awareness and planning and personal/social growth and understanding. 2. Deliver the curriculum in a systematic manner using diverse strategies and settings. 3. Facilitate the instructional process in collaboration with school and community resources. E. Individual Planning 1. Systematically develop and evaluate planning for high school and post high school on an annual basis through individual planning which results in a written career/educational plan for each student. 2. Address written objectives for grade level. F. Managing 1. Review the school counseling program annually with administrators. Establish a planning calendar for activities. 2. Plan, implement, maintain and evaluate the systems necessary for the support, maintenance and improvement of the school counseling program. 3. Activities include but are not limited to preparation of budget, production of printed materials, guides, etc. that support the program. 4. Contribute to a program of public relations. 5. Articulate the school counseling program to students, parents, teachers, staff and community. 6. Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development activities. 2 of 3

11 G. School System 1. Participate in school decision making and in activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school. 2. Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. Communicate with the administrators, teachers and staff, parents and students as to the role of the school counseling program in the overall educational process of the school. H. Professionalism 1. Adhere to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations. 2. Adhere to preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of local policies and state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling. 4. Demonstrate personal growth and professional development.
