1 Application for Scholarships Applicants for College of Education scholarships must be enrolled in a University of North Texas College of Education program and classified as a UNT College of Education student. Individuals completing this application will be considered for the scholarships administered by the College of Education Scholarship Committee. Other scholarships may be available and are administered by departmental scholarship committees in the College of Education and will require a separate application, specific to that department. Please contact your department for more information. All UNT students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at to ensure all available financial resources may be utilized. The FAFSA becomes available after January 1 each year. Early application ensures the best opportunity to compete for available funding. If you are unable to complete the FAFSA, you may be eligible to complete the Texas Application for State Financial Aid available through College for All Texans or the Texas Public Education Grant for International Students (TPEG-I) Application available through the UNT International Office. Awards to scholarship recipients may be coordinated with your other awards received for the award period by Student Financial Aid & Scholarships. Once posted to a student account, receipt of late awards may cause other scholarships (awarded by UNT or outside agencies) and other resources (federal, state and institutional financial aid) to be adjusted if the current cost of attendance at UNT, or the student need for assistance as calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is exceeded. Competitive Scholarship Requirements: Non-Texas residents assessed non-resident tuition receiving UNT competitive scholarship(s) of at least $1,000 will have their non-resident tuition charges waived and be assessed tuition costs at the in-state rate for the fall, spring and following summer term. Non-Texas residents residing outside of Texas and only enrolled in online courses should contact their major department for specifics regarding tuition charges. This Competitive Scholarship Waiver is considered other financial assistance by the State of Texas. Students receiving a competitive scholarship wavier of nonresident tuition must complete Selective Service Registration, according to applicable Texas Education Code Per Texas Education Code (TEC) : An individual may not receive a loan, grant, scholarship, or other financial assistance funded by state revenue, including federal funds or gifts and grants accepted by this state, or receive a student loan guaranteed by this state or the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, unless the individual files a statement of the individual's selective service status with the institution or other entity granting or guaranteeing the financial assistance as required by this section. Students may fulfill the Selective Service Requirement by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). However, students may also complete the Selective Service Requirement by registering through The following scholarships may be awarded by the College of Education Scholarship Committee: The Jack Atkins Education Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Education, majoring in Early Childhood 6, Grades 4 8. Applicants must also demonstrate eligibility for need-
2 based financial assistance as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicants must be a graduate of any Denton Independent School District high school, if no applicants meet this criteria, then applicants who are graduates of any other high school in Denton County will be eligible for consideration. Preference will be given to first-generation college students. Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment, unless nearing completion of the degree program and do not need full-time enrollment. The Eva Marie Howard Atkins and Opal Watson Bryce Collier Education Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Education, majoring in Early Childhood 6, Grades 4 8. Applicants must also demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial assistance as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicants must be a graduate of any Denton Independent School District high school, if no applicants meet this criteria, then applicants who are graduates of any other high school in Denton County will be eligible for consideration. Preference will be given to first-generation college students. Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment, unless nearing completion of the degree program and do not need full-time enrollment. The William T. Bill and Margie L. Bryant Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Education, and must demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial assistance as determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference will be given to first generation college students with an interest in public education (as addressed in the essay), and to students who attended the William T. and Margie L. Bryant Elementary School in Arlington, TX. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless nearing the completion of their degree program and do not need full time enrollment. Annually renewable if recipient reapplies and meets requirements. The Robert and Martha Carter Scholarship for Child Development and Early Childhood Education Applicants must be a junior or senior, majoring in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, and have at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must enroll in and complete at least 15 semester credit hours each semester they receive this scholarship, unless less than 30 hours are remaining to graduation. College of Education Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled as a full time student in the College of Education. Undergraduate students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa and graduate students must have at least a 3.5 cumulative gpa on a 4.0 scale. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment. The Bessie P. Cowan Scholarship for Early Childhood Development Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in child development or early childhood education, with a 3.0 gpa, and must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicant essays must address why the scholarship is necessary to supplement family resources. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless they have less than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program, and must maintain a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Education: The Key to Success for North Texans Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education. Recipient must maintain full time enrollment unless they have less than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program. Recipients must maintain a 3.5 cumulative gpa, and must be seeking a career in teaching, administration, special education, counseling, or higher education. The Furr Endowed Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education and have a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless they have fewer than the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program, and must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa.
3 The Doris and Forrest Herold Scholarship - Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education and have a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless they have fewer than the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program, and must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa. The Karnes Scholarship for Education Applicants for this scholarship must indicate in their essay how they have worked diligently to overcome early education deficits or other major obstacles, demonstrated high potential for leadership, exceptional capacity for solving problems, and a compelling interest in experimentation and exploration, the innovative and the creative. Preference will be given to promising applicants who are daring enough to pursue one or more of the new areas of study and career options which evolve as scientific and technological advancements are made and as complexities of the human experience increase (as indicated in the essay). Recipient must maintain full time enrollment in the College of Education unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program. The Dean M. Jean Keller College of Education Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in any degree granting program in the College of Education and have at least a 3.5 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment. Annually renewable if the recipient reapplies and meets requirements. The Alvin and Lillian Miller Honorary Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education, and have a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 cumulative gpa and full time enrollment. The George S. and Betty Jane Morrison Early Childhood Education and Development and Family Studies Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time unless they are nearing completion of their degree program and do not need half-time enrollment, be majoring in Early Childhood Education or Development and Family Studies, and submit an essay of 800 to 1,000 words addressing how they serve others through community service or extracurricular activities, how the scholarship will benefit them, and how they plan to use the funds. The essay must also address how the scholarship will help them meet their goals and how it will make a difference to them in their career. The Vivian S. Spohn Education Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program. Annually renewable if recipient reapplies and meets requirements. The L. Fred Thomas Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time as a graduate student in a College of Education program. Recipient must maintain full time enrollment unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program. Preference will be given to applicants that are employed by a public school, and demonstrate a commitment to teaching (as addressed in the essay). The Bill and Marge Webb Memorial Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education with a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment and a 3.0 cumulative gpa. The Paul and Dorthy Zarafonetis Memorial Scholarship Applicants must be enrolled full time in the College of Education with a 3.0 cumulative gpa. Recipients must maintain full time enrollment unless they have fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full time remaining in their degree program, and must maintain a 3.0 cumulative gpa.
4 To apply for these scholarships: 1. Complete and submit the attached application. 2. Submit a typed one page essay on educational and professional goals, academic success, and financial need. To be considered for the following scholarships, please include the information requested: William T. Family members are not allowed to serve as a reference. Individuals completing scholarship recommendation forms should either: 1) place the form in an envelope, seal it, sign across the seal, and return the form to the applicant for submission with the application; 2) scan the completed form (with signature) and it to coe-info@unt.edu; or 3) mail to the College of Education Dean s office at 1155 Union Circle, #311337, Denton, TX If the individual completing the scholarship recommendation form s or mails the form, it must arrive or be postmarked by 5:00 pm, February 29, Please note: COE Scholarship Committee members are not allowed to serve as one of your three references. Completed application, essay, and the three completed scholarship recommendation forms must be received in the COE Dean s Office (Matthews Hall room 214) no later than 5:00 pm, February 29, Recommendation forms sent directly to the COE Dean s Office must be postmarked no later than February 29, or be received through no later than 5:00 pm on February 29.
5 The Scholarship Committee will review your completed application and will score it according to the following: 1. Cumulative GPA - 35% 2. UNT and/or community involvement - 20% 3. Essay - 30% 4. Recommendation forms - 5% each for total of 15% (limit of 3 recommendation forms) Applicants will receive an notification on April 4, 2016 of any scholarship awards for Written notifications will be mailed April 5, 2016 to scholarship recipients at the address listed on this application. The notification will include forms that must be completed and returned no later than April 18, Students who receive a scholarship award will be required to attend the STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Celebration that is held in appreciation of College of Education Scholarship Donors in September or October 2016, to meet scholarship donors. Additional information will be sent to the scholarship recipients regarding the celebration.
