Common Sense, Uncommon Commitment Certainly, clients look to their Financial Advisor for investment advice that will help earn acceptable returns, but for most people that s only the beginning. Throughout my more than 30-year career, I ve come to realize that investment expertise is only one attribute that clients value. They want someone they can talk to about their fondest aspirations and deepest concerns. They need someone to let them know their goals are unreachable without change in their saving and spending habits. They can sense when their Advisor cares about them as people, as well as investors. My client relationships tend to be enduring relationships, that extend to subsequent generations. I am committed to providing thoughtful and personalized service, combined with a common sense approach that encompasses the personal and financial sides of my clients balance sheets. Steven M. Swann, CFP 3

My Background Steven M. Swann, CFP Senior Portfolio Manager Senior Vice President Financial Advisor Much has changed since I began my financial services career in 1981. We were called stockbrokers back then. An electronic stock ticker snaked across the wall of our lobby, and my new silk tie was cut in two as part of initiation into the business. Ronald Reagan was President. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the year at 875. My wife and I were expecting our first child. I met a number of clients then who still are with me today. We are called Portfolio Managers and Financial Advisors now. My focus is on being able to help my clients develop strategies to retire as anticipated, care for aging parents without depleting their legacy, and bounce back from the loss of a spouse. My experience and professional credentials qualify me to offer sound financial advice and manage investments in even the most challenging markets. My clients and the trust they ve placed in me have brought me to this point in my career. A retired CEO walked into our office without an appointment during my freshman year in the business. He didn t look like a CEO with his plaid golf shorts and mismatched socks. He didn t introduce himself as a CEO, either. And so, as a new broker, it fell to me to meet with this person. That meeting marked the beginning of a decades-long relationship in which I learned never to make assumptions or take anyone for granted, and always to deal from a point of respect. The lesson served me well and has paved the way for a candid, caring foundation with my clients. I didn t grow up in Martin County, but I ve lived here since 1968. After graduating Martin County High School in 1970, I went on to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, then continued my education at the University of Florida and Florida Atlantic University. I have found great joy in my family and great fun with my dogs. I have found fulfillment in the community by volunteering with organizations including Little League, the YMCA, Hibiscus Children s Center, Peace Presbyterian children s program, JBHS Project Graduation, Treasured Lands and M.E. s Team Foundation. Steven M. Swann, CFP 5

Asset Allocation and Portfolio Planning I will work with you using a process that focuses on you and your goals, integrating investment decisions with your immediate financial needs and desired aspirations. This process encompasses four steps: 1 Personal review Before I can advise you, I must understand you and your goals. I will guide you through an extensive discovery process to identify your objectives, time horizon, tolerance for risk and other considerations that may play a role in shaping your investment strategy. 2 Asset allocation and portfolio planning Your input drives the development of a personalized financial strategy. Designed to help you meet your specific needs, it addresses areas such as retirement, education expenses, estate planning and tax minimization potential. When my analysis is complete, I will present to you an investment strategy that helps to identify appropriate diversification for your portfolio. 6 Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

3 Implementation After I have discussed and refined your strategy, I will work closely with you to bring the elements to life. Should we decide that outside money managers are appropriate for you, I will help you select from the hundreds of investment management firms available to you. If you prefer to invest in individual securities, I can help identify specific stocks, bonds and other securities that may be suitable for your portfolio. Whatever approach we decide on together, I will help you keep your strategy on track. 4 Ongoing communications and reporting I view ongoing communication as the foundation of our successful collaboration with you. I will make every effort to keep abreast of your changing financial needs and provide viable strategies to help you meet them. This means reviewing your portfolio together at your request. When your circumstances change, I will work with you to revise your strategy and reposition your assets to reflect your new needs and goals.

Creating Your Strategy Too often, people compartmentalize their financial concerns and address them individually without an overarching plan. As a Certified Financial Planner (CFP ), I will work closely with you, your attorney, accountant and other advisors to create strategies that work in concert. Typically, we focus on the following areas: Lifestyle Are you retired now, or still look forward to the day when you will be? Does the lifestyle to which you aspire differ from your current one? What are the financial implications? We ll talk about your cash flow and future spending requirements, as well as your plans for retirement, funding your children s or grandchildren s education, transferring wealth to heirs, and philanthropy. Liabilities The debt side of your balance sheet is no less significant than the asset side. Borrowing, when done properly, can help you realize possibilities that you might never have realized without it. Along with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney lending specialists, I can help you formulate strategies for funding your needs that don t require you to liquidate assets, incur tax liability or sacrifice investment income. Investments Asset management goes beyond comparing your investment returns to a specific market index. My investment philosophy employs a goals-oriented approach that involves: Determining your objectives and what returns are necessary to achieve them; assessing the statistical probability of reaching your objectives; evaluating whether the objectives are realistic. As a credentialed Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Portfolio Manager, I craft a personalized investment program that relieves you of day-to-day buy-sell decisions. 8 Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

Typically, I employ a value-based approach seeking stocks that are undervalued and overlooked in current markets. Depending on your risk tolerance, timeframe and other variables, we may allocate a portion of your portfolio to bonds, cash, commodities, currencies and alternative investments. Risk My investment approach features a variety of models with different riskreward characteristics. Only after carefully assessing your risk tolerance will I recommend an approach. Risk, however, extends far beyond your investment portfolio. We will discuss your retirement income plans to determine whether you have the ability to generate enough income for the rest of your life. We will also review your estate plan to protect your legacy from undue taxation and evaluate whether current trustees or executors are truly capable of making impartial decisions.

For Life s Most Important Goals With an experienced professional and the right resources, reaching your most important goals can be less challenging and more rewarding. I am ready to help you meet your goals, by combining my insight into your needs with the resources of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Setting a confident course Thorough, thoughtful planning planning that analyzes where you are as well as where you want to go is the most important step in establishing a path to your goals. I will work with you to explore and define your objectives and needs, and then structure a plan that is uniquely your own. Estate planning Managing the rewards of success Managing an investment portfolio should be a consultative, disciplined process that balances your attitudes and goals as an investor with careful analysis of the financial markets and the risks and opportunities they hold for you. You can rely on me for objective strategic advice in structuring your portfolio and for careful analysis of any investments we consider together. Shaping your retirement Together, we can work to make decisions that could help you move toward the retirement you expect. Whether you are building retirement wealth or making the transition to generating income from your assets, I can help you develop and implement a strategy based on your vision of retirement. Roth conversions Building a unique legacy Estate planning typically brings together the dimensions of life: personal, family, financial and charitable. I will work with you to understand the connections between your life and legacy goals, and work with your accountant and attorney to help you develop a strategy to position your portfolio appropriately. 10 Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

Educating new generations Helping to meet the education costs of children and grandchildren may be one of the most attractive and personally fulfilling investment opportunities available to you. I can help you access appropriate investment vehicles 529 plans and custodial accounts. Giving back through philanthropy Many successful individuals seek opportunities to support cultural and educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations and activities. Properly undertaken, charitable giving can provide planning flexibility and benefits for you. I can help you analyze and implement a strategy that rewards you while it benefits causes you care about. Strengthening your business The links between business ownership and personal wealth are many and complex. Whether your objective is to grow your business, realize its value through a succession strategy or sale, or maintain family ownership by the next generation, we can examine your alternatives in light of both business and personal objectives. And, should circumstance require it, we can use the access to banking services of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Protecting your wealth Insurance can play a critical role in virtually any comprehensive financial strategy, helping you to protect the value of your assets, protect your income and your family s financial security even perform important functions in a business succession or estate plan. I can help you analyze your current insurance portfolio and work to update your coverages to fulfill personal and strategic goals. Meeting current liquidity and banking needs Managing personal cash and securing liquidity for personal needs and opportunities are the day-to-day aspects of implementing a financial strategy.
