This assistance assumes many forms such as physical fitness training and education, exam study tips, and Officer Candidates School preparation. Those applicants and candidates who are truly dedicated will meet the standards and achieve their goal of becoming a Marine Officer. THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS Prospect Phase - During this phase, you gather information in order to make a well-informed decision. The Officer Selection Team will initially screen you, conduct an interview, and answer all your questions to ensure you are making a well-informed decision and that you are, indeed, Marine Corps Officer material. (Married Prospects are encouraged to bring their spouse to the interview.) Information can be gathered in a variety of ways. The best source is the Officer Selection Officer and their Assistants. There are other resources such as publications and literature handouts, current and former Marines, Marine Corps Officer Opportunities CD ROM and Marine Corps Officer web-sites: http://www.marineofficer.com ;http://www.lamarineofficerprograms.com (Marine Officer information); http://www.ocs.usmc.mil (Officer Candidates School information.) During this phase, the goal is to make a well-informed decision to apply for selection. Therefore, it is imperative that you understand the information in order to make a well-informed decision. Applicant Phase - During this phase, you begin to execute the application process. The process consists of different steps such as a medical physical, physical fitness test, and any mental testing examinations, if required. This phase can be accomplished in a short period of time for applicants who meet the standards initially. That said, at times an applicant will not initially meet the standard in a particular area. Through dedicated time and work, they rise to meet the standard of qualification. We are looking for the applicant who is willing to demonstrate dedication, hard work, professionalism, and determination. This phase culminates with the Marine Officer Candidate Selection Board. The Board convenes several times throughout the year to select the most highly qualified applicants. Once selected, you become a Marine Officer Candidate and have been officially accepted into our program and offered the opportunity to attend Officer Candidate School. Candidate Phase - This phase is broken down into three parts: pre-ocs, OCS, and post-ocs. During the pre- OCS period, you continue to learn what will be expected at OCS and prepare yourself to meet those expectations. The Officer Selection Team will continue to assist in your preparation to be both mentally and physically tougher for the rigors of OCS. The OCS period starts when you ship from the Officer Selection

Station to Quantico, Virginia * (Pay Entry Base Date starts here important date concerning pay). You will attend six-weeks or ten-weeks of OCS that is designed to screen and test you, ensuring that you possess the physical, moral, and leadership potential required of Marine Officers. As stated previously, upon completion of OCS you will return to school for the fall semester. Approximately four to six months prior to earning your Baccalaureate Degree, you will make the decision to accept or decline your commission. If you accept your commission you will be promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant and be assigned to active duty (ground officers and lawyers 3.5 years; aviation six to eight years depending on the type of aircraft you fly.) Freshman timeline: Complete freshman school year attend PLC (junior course--6wks) Complete sophomore school year no OCS Complete junior school year attend PLC (senior course--6wks) Sophomore timeline: Complete sophomore school year attend PLC (junior course--6wks) Complete junior school year attend PLC (senior course--6wks) Junior timeline: Senior timeline: Complete junior school year attend PLC (combined course--10wks) Complete senior school year attend OCS (10 weeks) then decide to accept or decline commission. *Note: For pay purposes, it is beneficial to enter the PLC program as a freshman therefore starting your Pay Entry Base Date early. This means you will be building up your longevity pay while you are attending college for three years. Some people have spent an entire lifetime wondering if they have made a difference in this world. The Marines don t have that problem. -Ronald Reagan Marine Officer Initial Training Phase-Your first assignment will be to attend The Basic School (TBS) for a period of six months. You are a commissioned officer during this training and are treated as such. This is not Basic Training. This is a leadership development course. TBS will give you the basic skills needed to serve as a Company Grade Officer in the Fleet Marine Force. The common denominator for all Marine Officers is leadership. Marine Officers must lead and are selected based on their potential leadership qualities. After selection and commissioning, the Marine Corps spends approximately one year training all officers to become leaders prior to taking charge of enlisted Marines. Our training is tough. It has to be. Marine Officers take on responsibilities well beyond their years. Here you will learn to be a Lieutenant of Marines. Upon completion of TBS, you will be assigned to your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) School. Aviation guarantee Officers will begin flight training in Pensacola, Florida. Judge Advocate (Law) guarantee Officers will attend Naval Justice School in Rhode Island. Ground Officers will attend their assigned MOS school. Ground Officers are assigned their particular MOS near the completion of The Basic School. The decision is made by taking into account your personal desire, performance at TBS, and the needs of the Marine Corps. With this said, ninety-five percent of all students get one of their top five choices. Upon completion of your MOS school you will be assigned to the Fleet Marine Force.

PAY AND BENEFITS Candidate Status: You will be paid as an E-5 while attending six or ten weeks of OCS -Approximately $ 2,800.00 (six-weeks) -Approximately $ 4,700.00 (ten-weeks) -Financial Assistance Pay: $ 1,575.00 for each semester for candidates who have completed their first training increment at OCS. This is money paid directly to the candidate to spend on whatever he/she desires. -College Tuition Assistance Program pays up to $5,200 per school year once you have completed one summer of training at OCS. This payment goes directly to the university. Marine Officer Status: Your salary as a Second Lieutenant could exceed $ 45,500.00 per year with pay increases annually, which includes monthly housing allowance. After three years as an officer, your salary with housing will average at roughly $65,000 per year. Full medical coverage for you and your family. Full dental coverage and family plan. 30 days paid vacation yearly (in addition to federal holidays). 75% of off duty education paid. Postgraduate educational opportunity programs. Retirement after 20 years. Adventure and challenges daily. Transferable and marketable skills and leadership experience. Sense of camaraderie, pride, and esprit de corps that you will not find anywhere else. WHAT IS A COMMISSIONED OFFICER? As a Commissioned Officer, there is special trust and confidence that is placed in you by the President of the United States. You distinguish yourself as one who possesses the moral, physical, and leadership traits to serve as a Commissioned Officer. On the premise of that commission, you, as an officer, are granted special privileges; on that basis, you are subject to certain responsibilities and obligations. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the area whose face is marred by dust, sweat, and blood a leader who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause who, at best if he wins, knows the thrills of high achievement, and if he fails, fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat. Theodore Roosevelt
