Prgram Descriptin Save the Children Afterschl Prgram Cmpnent Literacy, Healthy Chices, Emergency Preparedness, and Family Engagement Save the Children s afterschl prgram has fur cmpnents: literacy, Healthy Chices (physical activity and nutritin), emergency preparedness, and family engagement. The daily schedule is a healthy snack, ne hur literacy blck, 30 minute Healthy Chices blck, and transitin time. The literacy blck cnsists f a ne-hur Develping Reader Literacy Blck fr children wh are able t read at least 100 wrds independently and, where applicable, a ne-hur Emergent Reader Literacy Blck fr beginning readers in grades K-1wh are nt yet able t read. The Healthy Chices blck cnsists f 30 minutes f mderate-t-vigrus physical activity (n all but ne day per week), and nutritin educatin (15 minute lessn fllwed by 15 minute nutritin-themed game) n ne day per week. An age-apprpriate emergency preparedness theme is integrated int the literacy prgram fr ne week per schl year. Family engagement is fcused n helping parents supprt their children s educatin, health, and well-being thrugh infrmatin, resurces, and events. The prgram is implemented by a Prgram Crdinatr (wh has respnsibility fr the verall prgram), Healthy Chices Crdinatr, and literacy tutrs. Save the Children s afterschl prgram is designed based n research and best practice t achieve the best pssible results fr children. As such, it is critically imprtant fr the prgram t be implemented as designed. Getting Started Site Respnsibilities: Develp and prvide yur Save the Children Prgram Specialist with a prgram calendar f a minimum f 110 ttal days f the schl year in a cntinuus frmat withut weeklng breaks except in the case f schl hlidays and weather clsings fr at least fur prgram days/week fr at least 1 hur and 45 minutes/day. Hire a well-qualified Prgram Crdinatr t crdinate and participate in the afterschl prgram as well as in-schl and SummerBst Camp prgrams where applicable. Fr sites that cnduct bth afterschl and in-schl prgramming, the Prgram Crdinatr typically wrks 35-40 hurs/week during the schl year. Hire a well-qualified Healthy Chices Crdinatr and literacy tutrs. Fr these part-time psitins, in additin t time spent delivering the prgram t children, paid weekly hurs must include at least tw hurs/week t prepare fr mnthly/weekly/daily activities and reflect n implementatin f thse activities and at least 30 hurs/schl year t participate in Save the Children s training and technical assistance. Ntes related t hiring prgram staff: Staff/child rati fr the literacy blck is 1:10. Staff/child rati fr the Healthy Chices blck is 1:20 (r less than 20). Suggested jb descriptins are available frm yur Prgram Specialist. Cmpetent paraprfessinals can fulfill the requirements and will be trained by Save the Children. Prvide apprpriate space t cnduct all f the activities. Fr literacy, each grup f 10 children uses a separate classrm. Typically, tw separate spaces are needed fr develping readers ne fr cnducting guided independent reading practice (GIRP) and anther fr the cmbined read-alud, vcabulary and fluency activities (RAvFL).

When implementing emergent reader activities in additin t thse fr develping readers, additinal rms must be identified, ne fr each grup f ten children. Fr Healthy Chices, ideally there will be indr and utdr space available fr physical activity, and the indr space will be a gymnasium r large multi-purpse rm. The physical activity space shuld be large enugh that all children in a rtatin (maximum f 20) can be active at the same time in a safe manner. Prvide adequate space t safely stre prgram materials and supplies. Prvide adequate space t safely stre physical activity equipment. Prvide apprpriate space and a cmputer fr the Prgram Crdinatr and prgram staff t cnduct administrative duties. Prvide reliable internet cnnectin and access t a phne fr prgram staff t participate in Save the Children training and technical assistance. Ensure that children have access t the library during all guided independent reading practice (GIRP) sessins as part f the afterschl, in-schl, and summer prgrams as applicable. Fr each GIRP sessin, ensure a rati f at least ne cmputer fr every five children (e.g., if there are 20 children in a GIRP sessin, there need t be at least fur cmputers) t take AR quizzes and that access t the cmputers is in the rm where GIRP is ccurring. Utilize ne f USDA s child nutritin prgrams, such as Natinal Schl Lunch Prgram (NSLP) r Child and Adult Care Feeding Prgram (CACFP), t reimburse the cst f healthy snacks served in the Engage the schl fd service manager/staff in rdering and preparing the healthy snacks served in the Ensure that all prgram staff attend Save the Children trainings. Prvide access t a technlgy expert t supprt use f Renaissance Learning and ther prgram-related technlgy needs. With the assistance f yur Save the Children Prgram Specialist, purchase equipment, materials, and supplies as identified n the Afterschl Prgram Ordering Infrmatin frm. Purchase apprpriate Accelerated Reader (AR) bks t supplement an existing library r create a new ne with 50% f the bks purchased being nnfictin. Ensure that the AR bks purchased with Save the Children funding are available and accessible t children taking part in the Engage in recruitment effrts t attract children mst in need, with an expected minimum average daily attendance f 30 children. Cmmunicate t parents all district/schl plicies and practices that relate t children s participatin in a schl-spnsred Ensure that parents sign all necessary frms such as child participatin, agreement t abide by plicies and practices, and liability. Prvide a Save the Children Prgram Specialist t supprt yur site s prgram*. Prvide guidance in the rles and respnsibilities f prgram staff. Prvide necessary training fr prgram staff in-persn and/r in a distance training frmat. Purchase the license fr Renaissance Place sftware, including STAR Reading and Accelerated Reader fr each child in the schl, grades 1 and up. STAR Early Literacy Enterprise sftware will be purchased where deemed apprpriate by Save the Children. Prvide a parent cnsent frm fr children t be phtgraphed and the phts t be used by Save the Children. *Save the Children Prgram Specialists are als available t: Prvide supprt in the afterschl prgram staff interviewing and hiring prcess. STAR Reading Pre- and Pst-Tests We cannt emphasize enugh the imprtance f administering STAR Reading t every child wh is using AR and STAR Early Literacy Enterprise t every emergent reader. Because these assessments are prvided by Renaissance Learning, they mst clsely match ur prgram, thus they are the best placement assessments. In additin, we use them fr prgram evaluatin t analyze the results f the prgram and share successes with many interested parties, frm imprtant funders t state legislatrs. Site Respnsibilities: Administer the STAR Reading pre-test at the beginning f the schl year t all children wh are able t read at least 100 sight wrds t determine their reading range. (The Prgram Crdinatr can assist with the STAR Reading pre-test, but shuld nt be expected t d this fr the whle schl.) Administer the STAR Early Literacy Enterprise pre-test at the beginning f the schl, within 30 days f the prgram start date, year t all kindergarten and first graders wh are invlved with emergent reader activities in the Administer a mid-year STAR Reading assessment t all develping readers and mid-year STAR Early Literacy Enterprise assessment t all emergent readers wh participate in the afterschl prgram t mnitr prgress. Administer the STAR Reading pst-test t all develping readers and STAR Early Literacy Enterprise pst-test t all emergent readers wh participate in the afterschl prgram, in a quiet, nn-disruptive envirnment within 30 days f the prgram end date. Prvide supprt in using best practices t cnduct the STAR Reading and STAR Early Literacy Enterprise assessments. Math Pre- and Pst-Tests (fr 21 st CCLC-funded sites that implement a math prgram) Administer the math prgram pre- and pst-test t all children participating in the afterschl prgram at 21 st Century Cmmunity Learning Center-funded sites that cnduct a math prgram. Aerbic Capacity and Nutritin Knwledge Pre- and Pst-Tests Healthy Chices Crdinatr Respnsibilities: Administer the aerbic capacity and nutritin knwledge assessments as a pre-test, within tw weeks f the prgram start date, t all children in grades 4 and up wh participate in the afterschl prgram t have a prgram year baseline measure. Administer the aerbic capacity assessment as a mid-year test, between January 1-Feburary 15, t all children in grades 4 and up wh participate in the afterschl prgram t measure prgress. Administer the aerbic capacity and nutritin knwledge assessments as a pst-test, within three weeks f the prgram end date, t all children in grades 4 and up wh participate in the afterschl prgram t have a prgram year final measure. Enter aerbic capacity and nutritin knwledge assessment data int Save the Children s nline M&E System. Crdinate and cnduct a Save the Children Wrld Marathn Challenge event during a designated week in Octber t raise awareness f children s needs thrughut the wrld. Prgram Implementatin Literacy The ne-hur Develping Reader Literacy Blck (fr students wh are able t read at least 100 wrds) incrprates tw cre activities n a daily basis in ur afterschl prgram: guided independent reading practice (GIRP) (30 minutes) and read-aluds, vcabulary and fluency (RAvFL) (30 minutes). Fr children in kindergarten and first grade wh are nt yet able t read 100 wrds, the ne-hur Emergent Reader Literacy Blck uses authentic text t increase their backgrund knwledge, vcabulary, cncepts f print and fluent reading as well as enhance their understanding f emergent literacy skills such as phnemic awareness, letter recgnitin, sundsymbl crrespndence and beginning wrd recgnitin. Prvide Save the Children with weekly attendance recrds. Prvide guidance t children t ensure Renaissance Learning prgrams are used crrectly. Mnitr AR Diagnstics weekly t ensure that children are reading apprximately 1-3.5 bks weekly. Prvide supprt t children t achieve and maintain an average f 90% crrect r higher n AR quizzes.

Prvide supprt and resurce materials t ensure best practices. Prgram Specialist prvides in-persn and/r remte training and technical assistance. Mnitr weekly attendance and data recrds. Healthy Chices Healthy Chices Crdinatr Respnsibilities: Use the curricula, equipment, and materials prvided by Save the Children. Plan ahead fr all healthy snacks, physical activity sessins, and nutritin educatin lessns and games. Prvide snacks that meet U.S. Department f Agriculture s Natinal Schl Lunch Prgram (NSLP) reimbursement requirements. Wrk with the schl fd service manager/staff as apprpriate. Use best practices that keep all children mderate-t-vigrusly active during the 30 minute physical activity sessin. Cllabrate with the Prgram Crdinatr and literacy tutrs t ensure integratin f nutritin educatin thrughut the literacy blck. Prvide Save the Children with weekly data abut healthy snacks served and physical activities and nutritin educatin lessn and game cnducted. Prvide supprt and resurce materials t ensure best practices. Prgram Specialist prvides in-persn and/r remte training and technical assistance. Mnitr weekly attendance and data recrds. Emergency Preparedness Select ne week f the schl year fr the emergency preparedness theme. Ensure that emergency preparedness-themed read alud bks are available and tutrs have reviewed and are using the lessn plan fr each bk. Prvide the emergency preparedness theme. Identify the read alud bks and prvide the lessn plan fr each bk. Family Engagement Send hme a welcme letter/packet t each family with a child in the Send hme and cllect, at the beginning and end f the schl year, a cmpleted Family Survey frm ne parent per husehld f all children in the Send hme a family engagement newsletter mnthly that includes the ne-page Family Link prvided by Save the Children t families with a child in the Update a family engagement bulletin bard mnthly. Cnduct at least fur family engagement events during the schl year fr families with a child in the Prvide templates fr the welcme letter/packet. Prvide the Family Survey. Prvide the ne-page Family Link mnthly in English and Spanish. Prvide templates f infrmatin and graphics fr the bulletin bards. Prvide resurces fr develping and implementing family engagement events.
