MZUZU UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 ADMISSIONS Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to apply for studies in various faculties for Certificate, Diploma and Degree programmes listed below for the 2015/2016 Academic Year. The applications should reach the University by Friday, 26 th February, 2016. A. FACULTY OF EDUCATION 1 Bachelor of Arts Diploma in Education or its equivalent obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning and at least post diploma teaching experience 2 Bachelor of Arts Serving teachers with at least relevant teaching experience A full Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent with at least a credit in English (Language or Literature) and in any three of the following subjects: History, Geography, Social and Development Studies, Bible Knowledge, Chichewa and French. 3 Bachelor of 4 Bachelor of Diploma in Education or its equivalent obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning and at least Post Diploma teaching experience Serving teachers with at least relevant Teaching experience A full Malawi School Certificate of Education with at least a credit in English (Language or Literature), Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Biology, Physical or General or Physics and Chemistry. 5 Bachelor of Arts (Theology and Religious Studies) Diploma in Theology and Religious Studies or its equivalent obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning 6 Bachelor of Education (ICT) -upgrading Diploma in Education majoring in Mathematics or Physical or equivalent obtained from a recognized institution Bachelor of Arts (Education) and Bachelor of (Education) These programmes are aimed at producing professional teachers for secondary schools in the following majors: French, History, Geography, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Theology and Religious Studies plus Religious and Moral Education. Bachelor of Arts (Theology and Religious Studies) The programme is designed to provide students with professional knowledge, skills and values within the context of religious studies. The degree will provide job opportunities and advancement for the clergy and other ethically oriented careers in public, private and nongovernmental sectors. In an effort to meet the demand from Government for more teachers in science and language courses in public secondary schools in the country, the University will give more weight to candidates who meet the requirements and express interest to do science and language courses in Education. B. FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES S# Programme Entry requirements Duration 7 Bachelor of (Forestry) Certificate in Forestry, Agriculture or other natural resources related field obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning Not less than two years relevant work experience. At MSCE, they should have at least credits in Biology, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Physical or Chemistry and Physics or General, English (Language or Literature) and any other two credits obtained in not more than two sittings 8 Bachelor of (Forestry) 9 Bachelor of (Renewable Energy Technologies) Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture or other natural resources related field obtained from a recognized institution Not less than two years relevant work experience. At MSCE, they should have at least credits in Biology, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Physical or Chemistry and Physics or General, English (Language or Literature) and any other two credits obtained in not more than two sittings Diploma in Engineering or its equivalent, obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning Those with Diploma from recognised institutions of higher learning may be considered for a 2-year duration. Relevant work experience would be an added advantage 10 Bachelor of (Fisheries) Certificate in Fisheries /, Agriculture, Animal or equivalents, obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning MSCE with at least six credits in English, Biology, Mathematics, Physical /General or Chemistry and any other two science subjects Relevant work experience would be an added advantage 11 Bachelor of (Fisheries) Diploma in Fisheries, Agriculture, Animal or equivalents, obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning Relevant work experience would be an added advantage 12 Bachelor of (Land Surveying) Certificate in Land Administration, Land Surveying obtained from a recognised institution, Malawi School Certificate of Education with at least credit in English (Language or Literature) and with two credits in either Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Geography, Physical or Physics and Chemistry or General, and Relevant work experience 13 Bachelor of (Estates ) Certificate in Land Administration, Property Investment, Valuation, Estate Agency, Property, Property Development and Facilities obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning or any other subject related to real estate OR a Malawi School Certificate of Education with not more than 30 points and at least credits in the following: Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Geography, Agriculture and at least relevant work experience 14 Bachelor of (Physical Planning) Certificate in Land Administration, Physical Planning, Environmental, Development Control or Housing Studies obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning. OR a Malawi School Certificate of Education with not more than 30 points and credits in the following: Mathematics or Additional Mathematics, Geography, Agriculture and at least relevant work experience 15 Bachelor of (Land Surveying) Diploma in Land Administration, Land Surveying, GIS, Engineering, Hydrographic Surveying from recognised institution; At least relevant work experience and graduates from other professions 16 Bachelor of (Estates ) Diploma in Land Administration, Property Investment, Valuation, Estate Agency, Property, Property Development, Facilities or any other subject related to real estate; and At least relevant work experience graduates from other professions Page 2 of 6

17 Bachelor of (Physical Planning) Diploma in Land Administration, Physical Planning, Development Control, Environmental OR Housing Studies from a recognised institution of higher learning and At least relevant work experience Graduates from other professions 18 Bachelor of (Water Resources and Development) Diploma in Hydrology, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Agriculture, or other water resources related fields obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning Not less than relevant work experience Bachelor of (Forestry) The aim of this programme is to produce professional graduates with a mix of professional, scientific knowledge and transferable skills in technical, economic and social aspects of forestry, natural resources and environmental management. Main areas of training encompass forest science, forest resources management, forest products and utilization, forest engineering and social forestry among others. Graduates of the programme are expected to work in key areas of research, forest management, conservation and participatory forest resources management initiatives in private, public and non-governmental sectors. Bachelor of (Renewable Energy Technologies) The programme is aimed at producing engineering specialists in renewable energy technologies ( RETs) and in energy policy formulation and planning. Students are equipped with scientific, technical and theoretical skills in designing, installation, operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems such as hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, wave, solid biomass, biofuels and biogas. Furthermore, they are provided with skills to carry out energy supply and demand assessment, energy planning and policy analysis, environmental impact assessment, environmental auditing and addressing issues of environmental degradation, waste management and climate change. Graduates from this programme are expected to work in government, industry and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the fields of energy generation, transmission and distribution; energy consulting and contracting; energy regulation, planning and policy formulation; waste management and also in services such as health, housing, water supply, social welfare and community development. Bachelor of (Fisheries) Graduates of this programme will be equipped with scientific knowledge and technical and transferable skills to manage, restore, conserve, explore and utilise both capture and culture based fisheries. The programme covers courses in limnology, ichthyology, fisheries management, fish processing and quality management, fisheries and aquaculture economics, and general aquaculture. Bachelor of (Land Surveying) The programme aims to produce graduates specialised in land surveying. It combines scientific knowledge and technical skills to address land management challenges related to land surveying and therefore incorporate units that address land registration, cadastral surveying, hydrographic surveying, engineering surveying, remote sensing, and land information systems among others. The graduates of this programme are expected to practice as land surveyors with full recognition of local and international professional institutes. Bachelor of (Estates ) The programme aims to produce graduates specialised in estates management. It combines scientific knowledge and technical skills to address land management challenges related to real estate and therefore incorporate units that address property management, property valuation, property investment, estate agency, facilities management, and development among others. The graduates of this programme are expected to practice as estates management officers and valuers recognised by national and international professional institutes. Bachelor of (Physical Planning) The programme aims to produce graduates specialised in physical planning. It combines scientific knowledge and technical skills to address land management challenges related to urban, regional and rural planning; housing and land tenure security; environmental planning and management; population dynamics; local governance; transportation planning among others. The graduates of this programme are expected to practice as physical planners in government, city and districts councils, parastatals, NGOs or as planning and environmental consultants recognised by national and international professional institutes. Bachelor of (Water Resources and Development) Graduates in this programme will be equipped with professional, transferable skills, scientific and technical knowledge in water resources management and development, planning, engineering, environmental management, sanitation and hygiene. Opportunities await graduates of the programme as planners, consultants, managers and entrepreneurs in the private, public and non-governmental sectors. Page 3 of 6

C. FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES 19 Bachelor of (Biomedical s) Diploma in Biomedical s or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning. at least relevant work experience. Previous academic records (transcript) Malawi School certificate of Education or its equivalent with at least credits in English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and any other science subject. 20 Bachelor of (Optometry) Diploma: Optometric Technician or its equivalent obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning Relevant work experience will be an added advantage Placement and length of program will depend on departmental and selection committee review of qualifications and program curricula 3 - Bachelor of (Biomedical s) The programme provides students with scientific and practical knowledge and transferable skills in biomedical sciences in order to prepare them for a wide range of career opportunities and further training in health-related professions. Bachelor of (Optometry) This is a SADC Region programme designed to develop professionally and technically competent optometrists who will provide appropriate refractive and low vision services to clientele in a variety of settings. The graduates of this programme will provide promotive, preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative ophthalmic eye care services within the principles of primary health care. D. FACULTY OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT 21 BSc (Tourism) 22 BSc (Hospitality ) Diploma in Travel or Tourism and any related field obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning. MSCE with at least a credit in Mathematics, English and any other subject. A minimum of two years working experience will be an added advantage. Diploma in Hospitality or Hotel and any related field obtained from a recognized institution of higher learning. MSCE with at least a credit in Mathematics, English and any other subject A minimum of two years working experience will be an added advantage. Bachelor of (Tourism) Graduates in this programme will be equipped with professional, transferable skills, scientific and technical knowledge in tourism planning, management, research and development. Opportunities await graduates of the programme as planners, consultants, managers and entrepreneurs, in private, public and non-governmental sectors. Bachelor of (Hospitality ) Page 4 of 6

CENTRE FOR SECURITY STUDIES 23 Certificate in Security Studies Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent with at least six credits including English and Mathematics, At least work experience in recognisable defence or security service 1 year 24 Diploma in Security Studies- Certificate in Peace and Security Studies or its equivalent, obtained from a recognised academic institution, and At least work experience in recognisable defence or security service 1 Year 25 Degree in Security Studies- Diploma in Peace and Security Studies or its equivalent, obtained from a recognised academic institution, or A degree in social sciences obtained from recognised academic institutions, and relevant work experience in recognisable, defence or security service 2 Years Security Studies Graduates of these programmes will be equipped with professional knowledge and transferable skills in security sector management that will enable them respond to emerging challenges in the security sector with regard to such areas as conflict prevention and resolution, international humanitarian law, counter-terrorism, migration and development, diplomacy and international relations, intellectual property rights, public policy analysis, financial management, security and development, gender and security, and national security management among others. The programmes target middle and senior management from Defence, Police, National Intelligence Services, Immigration, Correction Service, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Revenue Collection Authority, Fiscal Services, Media, the Judiciary and civil society organizations working in the field of peace and security. F. INTERPRETATION OF INTERNATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Qualifications comparable to O-Level/IGCSE shall be interpreted as follows for purposes of admission: A*= 1; A = 2; B = 3; C = 5; D = 7; EFG = 8. G. TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS 1. students taking certificate, diploma and degree programmes are required to pay K250,000.00 tuition per academic year 2. Fees for Non-Malawian undergraduate students Fees General Programmes Optometry Programme SADC USD 1,500 USD 1,500 Non-SADC USD 3,000 USD 3,500 The above fees do not include costs for board and lodge, Candidates selected for studies in education, library and information science, biomedical sciences, optometry, tourism, and in hospitality management have additional requirements such as uniform (where possible), upkeep during practical/attachment period. Most programmes also require students to do research projects and other academic related requirements. Candidates should therefore prepare for these additional costs. Detailed costs will be available to the successful students at a later stage.. All candidates will be admitted on self-sponsored category. H.
