Pedestrian Circulation Master Plan Skywalk and Utility Integration Guidelines Project Mission This document describes the existing, planned, and future skywalks and utility routing on the campus of the Texas Medical Center (TMC).This document provides guidelines for the integration of skywalks and utilities.the intent of the integration of these two systems is to create skywalks that: 1) Extend the availability of TECO (Thermal Energy Corporation) and other utilities to member institutions, 2) Protect utilities from flooding hazards, 3) Provide expanded maintenance opportunities for utilities, 4) Provide cost-sharing opportunities for an expanded skywalk network, and 5) Assist TECO and other utility providers to access the buildings of TMC member institutions. The guidelines are for use by institutional planners, architects, and engineers involved in the expansion of the Texas Medical Center s skywalk system. 1

Skywalk Cross Section and Utility Design Information Utility design guidelines and notes: - Dimensions show minimum required clearances. - Section shows 30 chilled water pipes. Actual pipe dimensions and arrangements may vary based on location. All final layouts and dimensions must be coordinated with TECO and other utilities. - Structure to be designed to meet all TECO dead and live loads, thrust loads, and expansion forces. - Allow space for expansion elbows or expansion fittings as required by TECO. - Allow for pipe cross-under at utility intersections. Cross-under will require a deeper skywalk structure. 16-6 clear must be maintained over roadways. - Structure to allow for pipe replacement and service access from below. - Utility vents should be located on the side panels of the structure. - Structure to provide complete pedestrian protection from utilities. Note: The above chilled water and steam information was provided by TECO. All utility arrangements shown are for general information only and are not to be used for engineering purposes. 10
