Whisky & Soda vs. WISKI & SODA Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 1

Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI With Your Neighbours Christine McClure, Quinte Conservation Gord Mountenay, Mississippi Valley Conservation Session T3G AD Latornell Conservation Symposium November 21, 2013

OUTLINE Brief History of CA data management / polling programs What is WISKI SODA MNR s Pilot Project with WISKI The creation of the Hub Quinte/ Mississippi Costs Associated with the Hub Current Status of the Hub Challenges and Benefits of WISKI Christine to provide examples of what has been done to date. Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 3

HISTORY Discussions back in the early 1980 s between CA s and MNR to create a common polling program and database for compiling and storing data MNR couldn t share their program for accessing gauges CA s couldn t afford products on the market so they developed in house capabilities with varying degrees of success Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 4

WISKI Around 2005, KISTERS presented WISKI SODA to the Provincial Flood Forecasting Workshop SODA data acquisition program that polls many different types of loggers, pushes the data to WISKI, WISKI the software program which compiles, stores and allows the user to analyze the data in a variety of ways, many of which have already been developed In 2007 MNR purchased WISKI SODA Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 5

WISKI MNR Pilot Project In 2007 MNR along with the Provincial Flood Forecasting Committee began a Pilot Project with 3 CA s (Ausable Bayfield, Grand River and Mississippi Valley) There were technical difficulties and IT issues that limited the effectiveness of this pilot project In 2009, the Rideau and South Nation CA s also joined the pilot group but the technical difficulties persisted Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 6

Eastern Region Flood Forecasting Committee In early 2010, KISTERS made a presentation to the ERFFC on WISKI Most CA s were interested but could not afford the cost to purchase on our own so approached KISTERS with the idea of a joint venture (10 CA s) to split the cost KISTERS response was positive and the framework was proposed with the support of the MNR Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 7

The Options We Host it They Host it Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 8

Creation of the HUB Late 2010, Quinte Region CA and Mississippi Valley Conservation committed to purchasing WISKI SODA and decided to host the solution at Quinte s office KISTERS offered the 1/10 th shared cost to both CAs even though only two joined at first Quinte and Mississippi shared the cost of SODA and training and KISTERS split it over 3 years WISKI Training November 2011/ SODA December 2011 WISKI SODA in production as of January 1, 2012 Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 9

Current Status 4 CA s Over 300 stations Over 180 parameters 1000 s of Time Series June 2013 Rideau Valley CA joined the hub October 2013 South Nation CA joined the hub December 2013 Lower Trent CA will join the hub Cataraqui and Ausable Bayfield CA s have indicated that they will join in January 2014 Millions of data points Current costs to join the group $8,650 for SODA and WISKI License and $3,000 annual Limited to 10 named CA s in the hub Discussions with other CA s about providing a backup system or creation of another hub Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 10

Challenges of WISKI SODA Entering historical data is a daunting task but getting easier with each CA that joins Primary data storage in Quinte data could be lost. Quinte has established offsite backup of all data to reduce the risk. Connectivity If server or Internet goes down, the system is not accessible. CA s still have access to historical approach for obtaining the data to ensure redundancy in the program Lengthy learning curve but excellent support from KISTERS and a North American User Group helps offset it Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 11

Benefits of WISKI SODA This addresses the requests of CA s to provide a consistent approach to polling, compiling, storing and using data across the eastern Ontario and a large portion of the province. Excellent support from KISTERS in all aspects of this project Now an affordable solution and pays for itself in time savings very quickly Shared costs going forward for additional modules Expanded resources workload shared among CA s and provided to each other Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 12

Benefits of WISKI SODA Water quality module included with the program is a significant program on its own In house training and documentation creating our own how to guides and organized Hub Wokshops North American user group and a world wide user group updates created can become part of the next release version Instant access to adjacent CA precipitation data for forecasting or storm tracking purposes Most data loggers supported by program so changing the gauges is no longer the issue it was Eastern CA Collaborative Sharing WISKI with your Neighbours 13

How Does WISKI Make our Lives Easier?

Current Data within WISKI Automate gauge polling within SODA Trigger additional polling at any time using SODA Data automatically populates the WISKI database

Current data readily available Trends apparent with visual representation of the data

Upstream Downstream Relationships Time lag between peaks Magnitude of peaks Integration tool to determine runoff volume
