Scholarship fund=$160.00 C. Only Coral Springs, South Broward, and West Pines has paid D.$100 $110 (Corrected at 9/13 BCASC meeting) for high schools, $30 for middle schools, due by November 1st. V. Officer s Report A. Introduction-All officers introduced themselves B. VP report-no chairs for committees for BCASC, each committee needs a chair but we need the advisors approval. Advisor needs to CAB Nova High School s advisor if they want to. 1. Leah named all the projects up to chair 2. Leah needs the info from each school so it will make her life easier C. Student Advisor s to the board Spencer-He reviewed what has happened over the summer. He talked about now Mr. Notter is gone and now we have five choices. They will be announced soon. Two members stepped down and there is an election in November. Class sizes have changed because of the Legislature. 1,400 teachers were cut. End of course exams are now starting in Biology, Chemistry and Geometry. Laura-She talked about District committees and what they are. She talked about how we need to step up and make a difference. We need spots filled so they can make a difference. D.SFLTC Delegate Juanita-She talked about how she went to camp and what a great experience she had. She remembers it like it was yesterday and how she made great friends that are always in her heart. Now she feels that she is a better leader than before.

VI. Student Activities Liaison, Mr. Mike Roland-We took an oath about never using the term extracurricular and now they are co-circular. It is more true now, especially since end of course exam. All schools are going to be tested on the same thing and creativity is gone. Be aware that Student Council is not a club. Second, no matter what you are you are not members you are representatives. Some schools should be nervous about their schools size and how well they are doing their jobs. Student Government has three jobs A. Engage Kids -Get them more involved instead them just coming to events B. Become involved in civic engagement -Utilizing student advisors to the board C. Be of Service We are student leaders because we want to stand out, so we always participate because we want to. Get kids involved that are not in student councils. D. We have major budget cuts Money is tight for everyone now for example, many homecomings in Broward are being held in the gym. E. Schools can buy silver chords is they can afford them 1.It was cut out of budget 2.$6.50 a cord when you order from Hurff Jones 3.Still have Gold Chords F. Staff needed for the Middle School Leadership workshop If there is not enough papers then advisors have the paper on their disc G. You should be involved in BCASC, FACS, and District 6 1.SASC is good 2.NASC, but you only get a magazine for $85.00 H. Kick-off Classic-Everyone is welcomed and talked about buses. Mike Smith is the keynote speaker. $75.00 per delegate and hotels are pretty cheap. Registration is up front and advisors have it. Deadline is September 16th I. No academic games-nhs has a Brain Brawl, no middle schools. There is still a dodgeball tournament but it is no longer at Lockhart and they need to find a new place. VII. Committee Reports Ethics Forum-Held on October 21 VIII. Jill Young, Director of School Boundaries 1. She explained how boundaries are chosen and how they work. She used a presentation hoping to cover all the questions we have. 2. Minutes The Secretary read the minutes from the August (8/31/11) Meeting The minutes were corrected to indicate that high school BCASC dues are $110. The minutes were accepted as corrected. IV. Treasurerʼs Report A. BCASC Dues must be paid by November 1 st. The dues are $110 per high school and $30 per middle school. $80 of the high school dues payment goes to the BCASC scholarship fund. Checks should be made payable to South Broward HS, BCASC Treasurer. B. The current balance in the BCASC Operating Fund is $3,464.61 C. The current balance in the BCASC Scholarship Fund is $790.00 V. Officerʼs Report A. The President had no report at this time B. The Vice President had no report at this time C. The Middle School Vice President had no report at this time D. Student Advisors to the School Board

1. A new superintendent to the school board has been chosen. His name is Robert Runcie. Even though he has never been a teacher or principal he has served in the third largest county, Chicago. We are really excited to work with him and waiting for him to come in. 2. The following students were appointed to School Board Committees Alexander Hidalgo (Flanagan HS) Workforce and College Ready Task Force Andrew Gallagher (Pompano HS) Attendance Committee Pablo Lapetina (McFatter HS) At Large Rep on the Code and Conduct Committee Luciano Arango (McFatter) Central Area Rep on the Code and Conduct Committee Natasha Dawkins (Northeast HS) North Area Advisory & Discipline Policy Committee Angeli Aguilar (Flanagan HS) ESOL Leadership Council Blair Hurt (Piper HS) Central Area District Advisory Committee Fahad Khan (Cooper City HS) South Area District Advisory Committee Jessica Maiz (Flanagan HS) South Area Advisory Council 3. Students are needed for the following School Board Committees Charter School Task Force Central Area Advisory Council Code and Conduct Committee (South and North Areas) Discipline Policy Committee Diversity Committee (North area Position) Environmental Technical Advisory Committee Literacy Task Force Technology Advisory Committee Wellness and Learning Support Committee Workforce and College Ready Task Force Nutrition Committee Policy 6000.1 (Pupil Progression and Graduation) Work Group 4. Laura emphasized the importance of student participation on these committees. They give the student a chance to give their opinions and influence board actions and policies before they are implemented. VI. Activity liaison Mike Roland Before your student government talks to the Student Advisors to the Board about a problem specific to your school, they must try to fix their problem first before they seek help. People need to get more involved with the county committees to have a

voice in the changes that these committees propose. Its important to pay attention to the minutes because once they are accepted, either by reading and corrections or by a motion to forego the reading of the minutes, they cannot be changed. The issue of silver cords is still up in the air. The discussion at the county is that however it is resolved it must be the same for all high schools level District 6 meeting is this Saturday. Please note that Mr. Roland announced that he trashed all of the applications to be a chair for a BCASC committee because the instructions were to send them to the Vice-president school. He said he did this to emphasize the importance of following instructions. VII. Committee Reports Ethics Forum Kenya from Nova High said sign up for Ethics forum. It is October 21st at Pompano. The Ethics Forum Planning Committee will meet again on October 5 at 3:30pm at Lockhart Stadium. VIII. Unfinished Business The following appointments were made to chair BCASC Committees: Ft. New Business There was no new business at this meeting

This will be corrected on future minutes XI Announcements The next BCASC Meeting will be held at Flanagan HS On Thursday, October 13 and will start at 1:30pm. District 6 of the FASC will meet at Plantation HS on Saturday. September 17. The meting will start at 9:30am. Mr. Roland announced that he received a donation to fund registration fees for Broward schools to send delegations to the FASC Kickoff Conference in Orlando. Schools wishing use those funds must contact him by Monday, September 19. XII The meeting was adjourned at 10:35am

Tonya Edwards Broward from the Broward County Election Office came to talk about voting. High schools are very important to voting. There are a number of high schools that are part of election process by be a holding center. B. She needs our help to get the word out to vote by passing out fans at football games at all the high schools in Broward County. She desperately needs our help to get the word out of voting! III. Student Advisor to the Board 1.Spencer spoke about the new superintendent, and the two new people that have been added to the board. After many speak up, speak outs have came to a conclusion that there are problems with guidance. They came up with an idea to put something online and make some guidelines to help. Graduations and schedule changes are the most important items to be worried about. Also put a place to put complaints. Spencer wants to know if you have any questions or anything to add, discussion follows. a) A student from Flanagan High School says there should be more specific with grades because there are different needs for different grades. b) Also another student said help with SAT and ACT and signing up 2.Laura says there is only 10 people signed up for committee reports. She needs more people to be there and help because we can change.

VII. Student Activities Liaison A. Some good news that high school principles will be paying for the silver cords! We are no longer going to have Lockhart. Most likely BCASC new home will be by Sawgrass. Mr. Roland needs help moving so contact him if you are interested in helping. No child left behind is handing out of a wavier, go online and say if we agree with it or not. Ask advisor for copy for the guidelines for the award book because it is a big deal. Start thinking about running for a BCASC position. Schedule a speak up speak out if you school has not done so yet because they are extremely helpful. FASC conventions registration is due. The fee is 75.00 dollars March 2,3,4 in Titusville. Broward County is offering a free charter bus. SFLTC information is going out and Mr. Roland might be able to reduce the cost! VIII. Committee Reports A. Ethics Forum-She is not here but it is on October 21st and starts at 8 o clock B. Middle School Leadership Workshop-It happened this past monday. Broward County Association of Student Councils December 8, 2011 Dillard High School, 8:30 XIII. Call to Order at 8:36 AM A. Katherine Wilson, the President from Dillard High School and Victoria Touson, the President from Boyd Anderson High School welcomes BCASC to Dillard. They introduced Dillardʼs Drama Club that would be performing monologues, solos, duos, and group numbers. XIV. Guest Speakers A. Superintendent Robert Resin thanked Dillard for such wonderful entertainment and said that public school can transform students lives. This was true for him as well. He told us how he moved to America from Jamaica when he was a young boy and that held back when he first moved here. After many years of being in school and working hard to be the first person in his family to attend any type of college he attended Harvard University for undergraduate school. Then he told us about the different goals that he has for public schools: 1. His first goal was to put as many resources into our schools to ensure our success in life 2. Next he wants to better market our schools because we have some really great schools but their not being shown they way that they should be. Also that we should have the best teachers and staff possible 3. Superintendent Resin wants to make sure that all operations are running the best that they possibly can. He noted that some things need to be changed to keep up with the technology that we have now 4. Finally he said that students have a tremendous amount of power and we are not using it to the best of its abilities. The county needs our opinion because we can make a huge change B. The presidents from Boyd Anderson and Dillard gave Mr. Robert Resin and plaque thanking him for coming today C. Jennifer Beyule from Joe DiMaggio talked about how they just opened their free standing, four story childrenʼs hospital. She told us how each floor has different theme. She needs our help to complete the fourth floor by taking in part in the Glove Challenge again because the money that BCASC donates helps in a big way! Finally she told us about Tour da Broward on February 26th that includes a walk, a run, and a a bike ride. XV. President-Megan asked the schools that did not write down their schools SGAʼs presidents email at this meeting they need to do so at this meeting B. Vice President-no report C. Student Advisor to the School Board 1. Laura-She really needs BCASC to step up and be a part of the District Committees because we can make a big difference! For example, students helped out to make the Student Code of Conduct what it is today. If you are interested in joining then email Laura. 2. Spencer-He told BCASC that there are many resources that we can use that do not cost anything like online websites for SAT help. We can sue these if guidance XIX. Student Activities Liaison-Mr Roland stared by telling him not to contact him until winter break is over! There is too much going on with the move. The Outstanding Leaders Banquet is moved to April 4th. There is a slight problem with Broward Student Leaders Day because it is the Wednesday after we come back from FASC, but if you are interested in helping fill out the packet and the meeting in January 2nd, 2012. Buses to state convention will be free of charge but you need to tell Mr. Roland how many people you are bringing. There is some good news! He will be able to help out schools with SFLTC by being able to send one delegate from each school free of charge. Finally he showed us a video about how student involvement can help keep students in school. It really impacted BCASC. XX. Committee Reports A. Cure Finders-They are getting all their stuff together and will have more at the next meeting B. Destination Diploma-They are excited to chair this committee and when you do something make sure you ket them know what you have done C. Ethics Forum-No report D. Glove Challenge-Westglades told us they are very excited to chair this and they canʼt wait to do it! E. Holiday Cards-They thanked all the schools that took part in the Holiday cards and mailed them to seven different hospitals throughout the state. F. Senior Citizen-They came up and told us how their school is doing a Senior Prom where they go to a Senior Citizen home and put on a mini prom for them. School Beautification-Ft. Lauderdale G. Wacky Olympics-Monarch came up said they started getting everything together and that an email should be sent out shortly. They will have a theme by the next meeting

Broward Student Leader Day committee sign up is on the disc and should be ready after winter break XXIV. At My School We... A. Shelton Welodge from Ft. Lauderdale High School told us how his school did dancing with the staff, which is like dancing with the stars They pair up with a staff member and make up a dance routine, the winner gets a prize B. Eddie from Boyd H. Anderson High School told us how his SGA works with the ESC kids and plays games with them C. Dillion from Stranahan High School is hosting a talent show. He told BCASC that they should come by! D. Johnny from Ely High School does Holiday for Tigers which benefits Toys for Tots E. Chandra from Deerfield High School has RAK random acts of kindness and where they give out rewards to students who do good things F. Delia Smith from Northeast High School made a time capsule for all the students in her class G. Danny Seagul hosted a student vs. teacher soccer game to raise funds for their school XXV. Laura and Juanita from Flanagan came up and told BCASC that Broward County is the leading county in AIDS/HIV. They are doing a project in their school to raise awareness and they think that other schools should as well. D. Mr. Roland wanted to give Superintendent Robert Resin either flowers or a donation in his motherʼs name because of her death. He wanted to vote to spend $100.00 on either 1.
