Course title: College Algebra Course : Math 1314 Course Outcomes: You will be able to solve quadratic, rational, and absolute value equations. You will be able to graph functions and their inverses. You will be able to work with applications of exponential and logarithmic equations. You will be able to solve systems of linear equations. Prerequisites: College Algebra(Math 0310) or placement by test. Department contact info: Kingwood College Mathematics Department. 1

Required 1) Textbook: College algebra, 11 th ed., Gustafson/hughes. Brooks/Cole a) Bundle: Textbook + Webassign Access Code ISBN: 9781133537403 b) Textbook: ISBN: 1-111-99090-5 c) WebAssign E-book: ISBN: 1-285-85831-X 2) Student Solutions Manual: ISBN: 9781133103479 3) Graphing Calculator: I suggest the TI-82, 83, or 84 for this course. 4) WebAssign Access Code will be required after the first two weeks. WebAssign allows you access to the first two weeks quizzes free. You will be prompted to purchase the Access Code when you login to take quizzes. (You can purchase printed materials from the College Bookstore or online at www.cengagebrain.com. You can also purchase or rent from Amazon. You can purchase the E-book w/access Code from WebAssign when you login during the first week.) 2

WebAssign: You will be required to enter a Class Key to get on the WebAssign class roll. The Class Key is provided at the top of the D2L lesson for Week 1. You can take all quizzes during the first two weeks without purchasing a WebAssign Access Code. It is important that you login and take quizzes during the first two weeks. Failing to do so may result in your being dropped from the course. You will need a valid Access Code to take quizzes after the first two weeks. If you purchased a textbook with the code you do not need to purchase another one. You will be prompted to purchase the Access Code when you login during the first two weeks. System Requirements for WebAssign Browsers: Mozilla Firefox seems to work best with the WebAssign software and Google Chrome seems to work best with D2L. Browser Settings: Allow cookies from www.webassign.net Allow Pop-ups from www.webassign.net For security, do NOT allow your browser to store your WebAssign password. 3

Browser Plug-ins Required: (Load the latest version) Adobe Acrobat Reader, free Download. Adobe Flash Player, free Download. Adobe Shockwave Player, free Download. Java, free Download. Apple Quick Time You can check your system requirements at lonestar-online and also when you login to the WebAssign homepage. Schedule: The course will cover the textbook sections listed below. Week 1 Sections 1.1 & 1.2 Week 2 Sections 1.3 & 1.4 Week 3 Sections 1.5 & 1.6 Week 4 Sections 1.7 & 1.8 Week 5 Sections 2.1 & 2.2 Week 6 Sections 2.3 & 2.4 Week 7 Sections 3.1 & 3.2 Week 8 Sections Test #1 Week 9 Sections 3.3 Week 10 Sections 3.4 & 3.5 Week 11 Sections 3.6 & 3.7 Week 12 Sections 4.1 & 4.2 Week 13 Sections 4.3 & 4.4 Week 14 Sections 4.5 & 4.6 Week 15 Section Test#2 4

WebAssign Homework: Go to http://lonestar.edu/kingwood and select LSC-ONLINE to login to D2L and see weekly assignments. The learning management system used by the college is called Desire to Learn(D2L). Each week the software will open the assignment at 5pm on Monday and close the assignment at 5pm on the following Monday. The new assignment will be visible as the previous weeks assignment closes. You can contact me seven days a week via D2L mail if you have questions. If you are having trouble with a textbook problem, you can refer to the Student Solutions Manual or send me an E-mail. Testing: Each week you will be required to take an online homework quiz on the assigned textbook sections. You have 7 days to submit the assigned quizzes using the WebAssign software. Each quiz will be about 5 problems similar to the assigned homework. You will have 45 minutes from the time you login to the quiz with two(2) submissions When you are ready to take a weekly quiz you can login at http://www.webassign.net/login.html. There will be 2 WebAssign tests that must be taken at one of the Lonestar College testing centers listed below. There are no exceptions. The mid-term test covers homework from the first half of the course and the last test covers material from the mid-term. You will have two(2) hours with two(2) submissions for each test. Cy-Fair(CASA 104) Montgomery(C 208) Kingwood(SCC 223) Tomball(L 201) North Harris (SSB 105) 5

Evaluation: The Webassign software only allows for fill-in-the-blank submissions of answers. Each submission will be counted as one point by the WebAssign software. If a question has three parts, it will be valued at three points. The WebAssign homework quizzes will count 50% of the course grade. The two tests will count for the other 50% of the grade. The course is not setup for extra credit or make-ups. Course grade: The WebAssign software will sum all points earned on the weekly homework quizzes and the two tests. You will be able to see your grade by clicking the Grade tab at the top of the homepage and then Raw Scores at the bottom of the page. Your final course grade will be determined by multiplying the percentage on the WebAssign homework by 50 points and your test percentage by 25 points. For example, if you scored 80% on WebAssign homework you would receive 0.80 x 50 = 40 points. If you scored 90% on test 1, 0.90 x 25 = 23 points. If you scored 80% on test 2, 0.80 x 25 = 20 points. Adding these you have 40 + 23 + 20 = 83. Thus, you score of 83 % would result in a B in the course. The grading scale is shown below, (A) = 90% - 100% (B) = 80% - 89% (C) = 70% - 79% (D) = 60% - 69% (F) < 60% 6

Withdrawal Policy: If for some reason you need to withdraw from the course, send me a request through Mail or my office E-mail at lee.j.topham@lonestar.edu. You may be dropped from the course if you fail to login to WebAssign for more than two weeks. It is important that you login during the first two weeks. If you enrolled as a first-time student during the Fall of 2007 you are limited to a maximum of six(6) dropped courses at Texas public institutions of higher education. Academic Integrity: The college has taken a zero tolerance policy on plagiarism, collusion, cheating, etc. Do your own work and contact me if you need help. Anyone found cheating can be disciplined from a zero on an assignment to an F in the course. Computer Virus Protecton: The college has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place protect its computers. It is your responsibility to protect computers under your control to ensure that each diskette has been scanned with anti-virus software. Keeping backups is extremely important. Helpdesk: It is important to understand that as the teacher I can help with course content but I am limited to help with computer hardware and software problems. Contact me for Math help and contact the college Helpdesk at 1-866-614-5014 (24/7) for help with the D2L software.if you are having trouble with quizzes in WebAssign, call their Helpdesk at 1-800-955-8275 or E- mail support@webassign.net. 7
