Walnut Hills High School Association NEWSLETTER Editor: Patti Newberry, patti@irisavenue.com Summer 2014 The Senior Issue Letter From The President Walnut Hills Parents and Staff, Time really does fly by and this special issue that focuses on our Seniors and graduation proves that! One of my last responsibilities as President of the Walnut Hills High School Association was to have the honor to congratulate seniors as they received their diplomas during graduation. It was an unforgettable afternoon, not only because Russ and my daughter Audrey graduated, but also because the event really symbolized Volunteering is a wonderful way to get involved at Walnut Hills, so don t be afraid to raise your hand. so much of what is special about Walnut Hills. The WHHS Alumni Foundation and Walnut Hills Administration spent many, many hours attending to all the details. The faculty was impressive, proudly standing by the students; our own students provided beautiful music; and the families cheered, respectfully, for their graduates. Most of all, students themselves, every one of them, were so happy to be part of the Walnut Hills community and to have accomplished so much. What a special day and a special community! What a couple of years, too! It has been a privilege to work with so many dedicated volunteers who have given tirelessly to continuously improve Walnut Hills for our students. Fundraising, collaboration, communication, volunteer opportunities, and community service opportunities for students have all improved because of the efforts of the WHHS Association s volunteers and the leadership team. Visual Arts, Campus Beautification, Parent Liaisons for every high school grade, and After Prom were all new committees or positions with active volunteers. Student events were supported in big ways including...the Costume Dance, Twilight Ball, Frosh, Homecoming Carnival, Tailgates, Class Fundraisers, After Prom, and Senior Send Off! Volunteers welcomed current families to meetings and Open Houses and welcomed new families in their homes and during orientations. Parents hosted a staff appreciation luncheon and volunteered at the College Information Center. Staff liaisons represented parents on the ILT and the LSDMC. Our website got a facelift. Under the Dome let everyone know what was happening at school every day; beautiful, interesting newsletters were distributed; and organized emails with helpful information were provided to families. Fundraising has been a big focus, too, and the Legacy of Excellence Annual Fund has grown substantially through the hard work of the committee and the generous small and large donations from many families and staff members. Collaborating on fundraising has been an important goal and WalnutFest was a wonderful FUNdraiser that brought together almost 500 parents, staff members, and friends of Walnut Hills from WHIP, Athletics and the WHHS Association to raise money for Walnut Hills! It was a great night of community. Walnut24 brought students together with help from parent leaders so students could help raise money for all the wonderful clubs and teams offered at Walnut Hills. Because of these amazing fundraising efforts, just this year, the WHHS Association will have distributed more than $200,000 for needed communications, student socials, WHIP, Athletics, Schedule E (clubs and teams), college counseling, the College Information Center, technology support, and textbooks! I am really excited that Beth Ewing will be the new WHHS Association President and know that she will do a great job working with you to make improvements that benefit Walnut Hills students. Thank you to all of you who make such a difference to Walnut Hills. Volunteering is a wonderful way to get involved at Walnut Hills, so don t be afraid to raise your hand. It is when you work shoulder-toshoulder that friendships are born. Parent volunteers I met when Audrey was in 7th grade are my friends today, and that has been a gift. WHHS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 2 Walnut Hills Principal Jeff Brokamp offered the following remarks at the Walnut Hills High School graduation ceremony at the Cintas Center on May 29. Good evening, and welcome to the 2014 commencement exercises of Walnut Hills High School. Each year, as principal, the day after graduation marks the beginning of my year-long deliberation regarding the message I would convey in this welcome address for the next year s graduation ceremony. You see, it s my ambition to collect ideas for 12 months and then boil them down to what I hope will be the perfect message to bestow upon the following year s senior class. Typically, my words in this message include topics such as the importance of applying your immense talents to a life of service, or working to find commonalities with people you meet in the journey of life. During the months of summer and fall, I simply open my mind to inspirational concepts that I may use for graduation from completely unsuspecting people such as my minister, my wife, friends, family members. I have this notion that if I allow enough time for the ideas to percolate I will land upon just the right ones. So, during the winter months I remain ambitious and light-hearted knowing there is plenty of time to select from my collection of inspirational artifacts. By the time spring rolls around there are napkins, church bulletins, ticket stubs, and concert programs that carry the notes that represent the flashes of inspiration that I experience when I least expect it. I am thankful for my wife who is fully aware of this obnoxious process I go through. This morning, she quietly walked by and dropped this quote from A.H. Wilson in front me that reads, No one should make the claim of being educated until he or she has learned to live in harmony with people who are different. With that quote alone I could end here and I would have said enough. The fact is that it s rare when anyone remembers much that it is said at these affairs by any presenter over the age of 18. But my message to the senior class is simple and sincere. Through your many endeavors you have touched my heart. From the unprecedented academic accomplishments of our senior class, to the masterful musical renditions of our vocalists and instrumentalists, the compelling theatrical productions, the victories on the field of competition and the Nuthouse on Friday nights, the lyrical writings of the Gleam staff, the fabulous creations of the Chatterbox and yearbook, the patience and grace shown by the entire class while trudging through the mud, dust and noise of the construction, the competition winners from JETS, Overture Awards, essays contests and others, the passion of our resident Banducci rockers and the genius that was the falsetto branding of the Ping Pong Club. Know that you have earned your place amongst the most legendary classes of Walnut Hills High School and we will remain always steadfast in support of your endeavors. WHHS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 3 Sun shines on 2014 graduates Thanks to good planning, good luck and good weather, Commencement Day for members of the Walnut Class of 2014 went off without a hitch. No one got too silly on stage. No one s family whooped and hollered too loudly. No one posted notes on their graduation caps or disregarded other instructions of the day. Well, OK, a few girls wore shoes that were a wee bit high, but hey, you only graduate once, right? Representing the senior class were class officers Jo Ellen Pellman, president; Alice Hospitel, vice president; Elliot Lamewona, treasurer; and Alina Tashjian, secretary. Kat Cheng, valedictorian, gave the commencement speech. Jeff Brokamp, principal, offered congratulations. Hunter Phifer belted out the National Anthem. And two different instrumental ensembles, under the direction of John Caliguri and Kerry Kruze, provided ceremonial music. Finally, 14 juniors served as Daisy Chain girls, following a tradition introduced by Vassar College in the 1800s and adopted by Walnut in the 1940s. The girls, all dressed in white, carried a 150-foot chain of daisies to celebrate the graduates, with 15 junior boys in sports coats serving as ushers. WHHS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 11 Seniors make most of their Send Off A Walnut Hills tradition on the last day of school for seniors, Senior Send Off was a huge success this year due to the overwhelming generosity of Walnut Hills families. Thank you to the many senior parent volunteers who donated their time, food and monetary donations. Listening to the sounds of the Walnut Hills Steel Drum Band, the senior class enjoyed a great lunch grilled by Dads Gone Nuts and cooled off with Shaved Ice treats. Seniors also played a variety of field games, took pictures and went Nuts playing on the various inflatables. I know I speak for the entire senior class when I say that the Senior Send Off was one of the highlights of the year! We are so grateful to have a dedicated team of parents who are willing to put so much of their own time into these events. Thank you for making our last day the best we ve had. WHHS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2014 13 WHHS Association WalnutFest brings in $50K plus WalnutFest Co-Chairs Janet Huston and Jan-Michele Kearney and the entire WalnutFest Committee pulled out all the stops raising more than $50,000 for Walnut Hills! Everyone worked so hard to make this February FUNdraiser a success. A big thank you to the almost 500 guests who were in attendance and to the amazing sponsors, food donors and auction donors. The theme was The Eagle Has Landed after the exciting end to many years of construction at Walnut Hills. A fun time was had by all, and many positive comments were received from guests. People were mingling, bidding, eating; the food was outstanding; and competition over auction items got almost fierce. Walnut students provided fantastic music and emcee Joe Ross was extraordinaire. Thanks to the WHHS Association, WHIP and Athletics for collaborating, raising much needed funds, and creating a night to remember! Twilight Ball a glittering success On April 18, the WHHS Association hosted the annual Twilight Ball for the 7th and 8th grade students. 420 students attended the event and a great time was had by all! It takes a huge number of parents to make such a successful event Big thanks to the 80 parent volunteers who brought baked goods, sold tickets, registered students for the event, decorated the gym, served food, chaperoned, manned the coat check area, cleaned-up including recycling, and supervised the dismissal process! Legacy of Excellence continues Thanks to all who gave generously of their time and gifts to support the Walnut Hills High School Association Legacy of Excellence Annual Fund and the Walnut community. Donations totaling almost $100,000 were used to help with text books, technology, and college counseling benefitting Walnut students. After Prom a second-year success Many smiling faces roamed the Walnut Hills halls past midnight for a second year in row on a recent April night. Juniors and seniors were treated to a Night in Hollywood for the April 13 After Prom event. Students were greeted by flashing lights of the paparazzi and our Walnut Hills Master of Ceremonies Jeff Ayers for a quick interview. Once inside the doors, one student said she did not even recognize her school. Emcee Jeff Ayers greets students at After Prom. With the help of a team of many creative and dedicated volunteers the new gym and music lyceum was transformed into an exciting atmosphere with dozens of activities for students to enjoy. Students were also treated to plenty of their favorite foods including Chipotle burritos, BW3 wings, and sushi! The highlight of the night was the extensive Raffle Prize give-away. Many students were thrilled to be going home with prizes including Bunbury Music Festival passes, Kings Island tickets, and the top prize of $500 cash! Alumni Office Class of 46 honors faculty More than 400 students jam at the annual 7th-8th grade Twilight Ball. The Alumni Foundation and the Walnut Hills High School Association annually join forces to recognize and honor two outstanding faculty members. The monetary portion of this award is made possible through the generosity of the Class of 1946 by their establishment of the Faculty Enrichment Fund in honor of their

The Walnut Hills High School Association enhances the award with crystal engraved Golden Apples, serving as permanent reminders of the winners achievements. Nominations are received from students, faculty, administrators and parents. On May 12, during the last faculty meeting of the year, this year s distinguished winners were announced math and science teacher Laurie Cotton and art teacher Liz Smith. In nominating Mrs. Cotton, one student wrote, She is very organized and maintains order in the class, so that our time is very productive and we can remain focused. Students went on to describe her as kind and fair. Another student wrote, The class is always challenging and we are encouraged to try our best. Several students indicated that this was their hardest subject but with the patience of this teacher and their own hard work they achieved their goal and saw their confidence level rise which translated to other subjects. Clearly she has garnered the respect of her students. Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Cotton has also assumed leadership for Walnut s JETS team, whose level of competiveness has grown and propelled them to competition this summer on a national basis. Similarly, Mrs. Smith received thoughtful reviews from her students. One wrote, This teacher gives us her full attention everyday and encourages us to grow creatively as individuals. Another said, Students sometimes come with a notion that they cannot succeed in this class because they are not innately gifted in this discipline. Mrs. Smith works with every student, giving construction feedback to improve their work. She demonstrates to students that diligence and hard work can translate to success and foster confidence. In addition, she is the adviser for Art Club which students reflected was something they look forward to all week. One student wrote, It adds a dimension to our academics that relieves stress and allows our creative side to flourish. More than one student indicated that Mrs. Smith was generous with her time, resources and was genuinely kind. Modern World Languages & Cultures Maddox deemed outstanding Walnut Spanish teacher Mr. Keith Maddox was nominated by Cincinnati Public School Superintendent Mary Ronan for the 2014 Outstanding Educator Award. Mr. Maddox was the CPS honoree at the Hamilton County Education Foundation s recognition breakfast on May 16, where 24 school districts were represented. Mr. Maddox was recognized for his creativity, original thinking, along with his development of an educational service program in Guatemala, and for putting a smile on his students faces each day. Mr. Maddox has more than 20 former students who have chosen to become Spanish teachers. The Modern World Language department congratulates Mr. Maddox for this honor and recognizes his contributions to project-based language teaching. Walnut students collect language awards Congratulations to the Walnut Hills High School team of students of German, named champion of 2014 UC German Day, collecting 25 of 46 awards including the best short film and culture bowl trophy. For the second year in a row, the highest scoring individual was Walnut student Jillian Kavinsky. Congratulations, too, to their teachers, Mr. Jeremy Collins and Ms. Johanka Hart-Tompkins. Congratulations also go to the WHHS team of students of Russian who earned medals at the Regional Olympiada of Spoken Russian, held in Columbus.The Bronze Medal recipients were Isaac Hunter-Linville, Samuel Peterson and Kyle Wilbur (level 1), and Brittany Dodd (level 2). The Silver Medal recipients were Skylar Coleman and Thomas Lang (level 2). The Gold Medal recipients were Kelli Stewart (level 1) and Mark Dovich (level 2). Mark Dovich was named State Champion. Their teacher was Ms. Hart- Tompkins. In the 2014 national language exams, Walnut had the highest number of national winners in the state of Ohio in German and in Spanish. In French and Spanish, Walnut Hills had the individual Ohio teachers with the highest number of national winners. In the National French Exam, 23 Walnut students scored in the Top 10 ranks nationally, earning national medals and the Lauréat National Award as well as the Lauréat du Chapitre Award and copies of Le Petit Nicolas from the Ohio Chapter of AATF. Walnut Hills had Ohio s largest number of level 1A national medal recipients. Congratulations to French teacher, Mrs. Madeleine LaJeunesse, who was the individual teacher with the highest number of National French Exam Medal winners in the state of Ohio. Department of State/National Security Language Initiative for Youth Scholarship for Study Abroad. Ben will study Mandarin Chinese in China for six weeks this summer Veronica Victa will study Mandarin Chinese in China with the Where There be Dragons program, thanks to a scholarship from the Walnut Hills High School Alumni Foundation. Brittany Dodd landed a Wilkes Leadership Fellowship at where she will major in Russian and minor in French. Her award includes funding for study abroad. Brittany will work with a French and Russian interpreter at University Hospital this summer. Celeste Kearney will participate in the Rassias French Language Immersion Program in France and live with a family for an intense four-week immersion experience. Camille Gilbert will study French this summer with the Middlebury College French Summer Program. Zoe Schack, who will attend the University of Southern California, was awarded a full year NSLI-Y scholarship for a year of Arabic studies.
