Why HRC You ve not even started your course yet, but have you thought about what you ll do when you finish? A course at Hertford Regional College can help you into work or get you into university. Our independent careers advisers are on hand to help you work out where you want to go and how you can get there. We ll even help you write your UCAS form or CV, and help prepare you for an interview. An Extended Diploma (Level 3) is equivalent to three A-levels Our range of courses means there is something to suit all levels - including going on to university if you want to - thousands of our students have gone on to degree courses after they finished at college. A different way of learning While in Sixth Form you mainly study theory with practical learning wrapped around it, Further Education (FE) is the opposite practical learning is at the core and theory is wrapped around it. It really suits those who like to learn through direct experiences as well as through books. I feel like I have been fully respected and treated like an adult, because of this I have listened more and paid more attention in lesson. I feel as if I have behaved a lot more during college than I did at school because I am treated more fairly. See more at youtube.com/myhrc HRC students have secured places with Russell Group Universities such as Bristol, Cambridge, King s College London and creative institutions such as Goldsmiths, University of London. They have gone on to study a range of subjects from Marketing to Psychology, Quantity Surveying and Law. 4
Experience Vs Book Smart A survey of 3,000 firms by the British Chambers of Commerce found 9 in 10 school leavers and more than half of graduates were not ready for work. Three-quarters of the companies surveyed put the situation down to a lack of work experience. Increase your chances of getting a good job: HRC differs from a traditional school and classroom environment. We have state-of-the-art facilities that reflect industry standards for you to learn in. You will be taught by industry professionals and work on reallife briefs to fully prepare you for employment and help you to determine where your real passion lies. Many of our courses offer work placements and we have strong links with over 400 local, national and international companies including Tesco, Johnson Matthey and GlaxoSmithKline. Avoid a wasted year Students who do not achieve at least a grade C in Maths or English GCSE are required by law to continue studying the subjects until the age of 18. This needn t mean a year of re-takes at school; at HRC you have the option to study Maths and English alongside your new chosen subject. The subjects are taught in different ways to suit those who may not have got on with them at school. We had our latest group of work experience students from HRC and were so impressed with one of them that we have employed him on a full-time basis. Lee Venables - Purdy Contracts Ltd 5

Made at HRC Think of someone you admire; somebody who has achieved what you aspire to achieve. There was a time when they were like you - on the way up and looking for inspiration. Our students don t study art to make fancy hand prints, they want their own gallery; they don t study hairdressing to get a cheap haircut, they want their own salon. Our entrepreneurs want to run a business and our sports students want to represent their country. Many HRC students go on to do just that! Here are just a few examples Chris Ford George Ezra Robert Blackham From music student to signed international artist with #1 debut album Wanted on Voyage George Ezra completed his Extended Diploma in Music Practice right here at Hertford Regional College in 2011. Went on to achieve First-class Honours Degree After finishing his GCSEs, Chris studied for his A-Levels and went on to work. Whilst working, his enthusiasm for marketing grew and he felt he would benefit from gaining a degree. The thought of going back into education was daunting. The Business Foundation Degree course at HRC sounded appealing but it was still a big step, especially as I had been out of education for two years. I met with the course tutor and her knowledge, passion for the course and promise of support reassured me that taking the Foundation Degree was the right thing to do. Chris felt small classes at HRC really helped with sharing ideas and made group work easier. The high standards set by the tutors at HRC prepared me for what is expected at university level and ensured that I excelled. Chris went on to the University of Hertfordshire to achieve a 1st in Marketing. When I started HRC, the thought of getting a distinction was just a dream, let alone going on to achieve a first-class honours degree! It may sound cliché, but my time at HRC ensured I could turn this dream into reality. During his time at HRC, George was recognised for his unique sounding voice; having performed at the official opening of the new Broxbourne Campus in May 2011, it was clear he had raw musical talent and stage quality. George s time at HRC gave him the confidence to perform, and the guidance to enable him to develop his skills in song writing. Having spent his childhood in Hertford, George later moved to Bristol to continue his passion for music. It wasn t long before his talents were recognised and he was signed to Columbia Records with the release of his debut EP Did you hear the rain? in October 2013. This was followed by his second track Cassy O in March 2014; leading on to his iconic release of Budapest which reached number 3 in the UK charts. The release of his debut Album Wanted on Voyage stormed the charts to reach number 1 in the UK Albums Chart! As well as performing on Radio 1 s Live Lounge, The Graham Norton Show, Later with Jools Holland, MTV, T in the Park and achieving a top 5 position on the BBC s Sound of 2014 list, George has now kicked off his European Wanted on Voyage Tour, with sold out venues in the UK and The Netherlands. The future sees George continuing his Wanted on Voyage Tour until the end of 2014, with live performances across Europe and more song releases in the pipeline. 10
Christina Kyriacou Matt Bishop From fashion student to internship with the UK s largest retailer Wanting to learn more about a subject she had a real interest in, Christina left school to study fashion and clothing at HRC; which opened up opportunities for her in design and fashion buying. After completing her course, Christina went on to De Monfort University to study Fashion Buying and Design. While at college, I was taught how to pattern cut at a professional level. If I hadn t had this training at HRC, I would have struggled in my first year of university. I feel that without coming to college, I wouldn t have been able to make the grades to get into university. The work experience that I gained whilst I was at college was invaluable and I wouldn t have discovered my passion for buying. Christina was selected for a 6 week internship with the design team at Arcadia, the UK s largest retailer which houses brands such as Topshop, Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins. Of her internship Christina says I loved my time there and it has opened up a new work pathway for me. I can t decide whether I want to be a buyer or a designer now. Arcadia were so impressed with Christina s fashion enthusiasm and commitment, that they offered her further work opportunities for the holidays during her university final year. Christina s work showcased at HRC Fashion Show, New Tribes, 2012 From Sports student to Professional Athlete for GB Canoeing Matt completed a Sport & Exercise Science Level 3 Extended Diploma course at HRC, after deciding he wanted to do a course he was interested in, instead of staying on at sixth form. A college trip to Snowdonia for a week was part of the practical side to the course that he loved. Matt sums up his time at HRC in three words as: Enjoyable, fun and educational. During his time at college Matt worked part-time at Lee valley White Water Centre, where he also trained as part of the GB youth rafting team; in preparation for the 2013 World Championships in New Zealand. The team, which also included Elliott Woodman a (former HRC Public Services student), fought off tough competition to win three medals. Matt describes this as his proudest achievement to date adding, the practical sessions and nutrition classes at HRC helped me prepare the correct food for my training. Matt is now a full-time professional athlete for Great Britain s Canoeing Team. He is training 3 times a day, 6 days per week in Nottingham, aiming to compete in the Rio and Tokyo Olympics. Our students go on to do great things; you can too. 11

Apprenticeships & Employment Service Apprenticeships Apprentices at HRC get real work experience and achieve accredited qualifications in exactly the same way that those do on a normal course. Apprentices work alongside experienced employees to learn the skills they need. You will need a job but if you don t have one we can help - we have strong relationships with many national and international employers looking to recruit apprentices. How else can we help? If you choose a full or part-time course the Employment service can support you in finding a part-time job to increase your professional experience whilst studying.
