Basic Windows NT Server 4.0 Installation and Configuration Windows NT 4.0 (English version) Installation The first step of the installation is to install the English Windows NT Server 4.0 to the file server following the normal Windows NT 4.0 installation procedure with several additional points to be noted: 1. The SAMS & CDS Server must be installed as the PDC. Use the same Domain name and Server name of the old server for the new server. 2. Service Pack Version 6.0a for Windows NT 4.0 must be installed after all setup and configuration being completed. 3. Single system partition (drive C) for hard disk that is 4GB or below. For Hard disk size greater than 4GB, the first partition (drive C) must be 4GB and the rest will be the drive D. There is no limitation on the size of drive D. NTFS Compression feature should not be used for the whole file system. 4. The formatted C: drive must be NTFS format. 5. Do not install IE 4.0 or later 6. During the Windows NT 4.0 installation, the setup program will prompt you to select the Windows NT components to be installed. The "Install the most common components (recommended)" option should be chosen. 7. Moreover, when you are prompted for installing Microsoft Internet Information Server, uncheck the check box and DON'T install the Microsoft Internet Information Server in SAMS and CDS server. The Windows NT 4.0 Setup program will guide you for the rest of installation. After the installation, carry out the following addition step to complete the setup: 1. Go to Services in Control Panel to disable the "Remote Access Autodial Manger". Stop this service and change the Startup type to "Disable" 2. Add the "File Manger" to start menu with the following steps: Click right mouse button on the "Task Bar" and select "Properties" Select "Start Menu Programs" tab and click "Add" to add shortcut to Start Menu Enter "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\WINFILE.EE" in the "Command Line" box Choose the Folder Programs to place the shortcut Enter "File Manger" as the shortcut's name 3. Install the anti-virus software immediately after the Windows NT Server 4.0 installation. Version 2.2 I- 1
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 configuration Hard Disk Partitioning Single system partition (drive C) for hard disk that is 4GB or below (partition size should be 540MB, 1, 2 GB or 4096MB depending on the hard disk size). NTFS Compression feature should not be used for the whole file system. Paging File Paging file size of Windows NT servers should be double of the size of physical memory. For example, set paging file size to 512MB if physical memory size is 256MB. Disk Volume Name Do not assign Drive C with any volume name. File system The formatted C: driver must be NFTS format. License granted No matter how many the Access License purchased, choose per server license with 20 concurrent user. Time Zone Set Time Zone to GMT+8 hrs. Network Protocol Only install TCP/IP network protocol in server Video Display Setting Select 800x600 screen size in server and install the appropriate Video driver. Internal DAT Tape Drive If the server is installed with this tape drive with 4mm DAT driver, the source of driver must be from NT 4.0 server, do not install this driver from other vendors media. Material DAT Autoloader Drive For school with DAT Autoloader Drive, install the bundled backup software or other backup software the school purchased additionally. Services Version 2.2 I- 2
Install Network Services shown in the following screen. Note : If school use the static IP assignment to workstations, the Microsoft DHCP Server should not be installed. User Account Setting The properties of NT Server administrator user account User name = administrator Default password = password (Inform School user to change the password after the installation) Administrator is under local group 'Administrators' It has full control access right for all directories and files It has full control over all share out directories. (For example, APPS directory) Account policy setting Maximum Password Age:Expire in 60 Days Minimum Password Age: Allow Changes Immediately Minimum Password Length: At least 8 characters Password Uniqueness: Remember 5 passwords Forcibly disconnect remote users from server when logon hours expire. Security policies The User Rights Policy (manage in the User Manager) on the domain is described in the following table. The administrative alerts, generated by the system and relate to server and resource use, will be sent to the user 'Administrator'. For example, the warning may be access problem, printer problem, low free hard disk space, etc. TCP/IP Printing Server This server is depending on Microsoft TCP/IP Printing service. This service must be added manually for each server from Network of Control Panel. By default, this service is manually started. As a result, you must set it start automatically. Modem Before configure Remote Access Service, delete all modem driver installed(i.e. check Control Panel Modems and remove all modem in the list). Note : For the successful CDS connection, the installation of modem should be done only in configuring Remote Access Service. Remote Access Service It can be installed from Network of Control Panel. During configuring this service, it will also configure modem. Please make sure you already connected the modem into server s COM port and configured the RAS as the items below. 1. Install Hayes Optima 144 driver for any model of modem 2. Allow Port to dial and receive call 3. Dial out protocols must have TCP/IP 4. Server setting must be set to allow remote clients running TCP/IP and allow all authentication including clear text. Version 2.2 I- 4
UPS If UPS is to be installed for supporting the SAMS server, it should be compatible with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Advanced Server and be properly configured in the NT Settings. If the bundled software is PowerChute. make sure the version is 5.2.1. It is confirmed that version 5.2 is not compatible to CDS. Assign IP Address To TCP/IP 1. Select Control Panel Network 2. Select Protocol Tab 3. Select TCP/IP and press Properties Button. 4. Input the IP address that you planned in section 7.2 5. Input 255.255.255.0 as its subnet mask Install DHCP Service and create Scope for DHCP IP Range For Schools to use the dynamic assignment of IP address After school planned the IP Scheme, Add scope for DHCP IP Range 1. Select Control Panel Network 2. Select Service Tab 3. Add Microsoft DHCP server. (Note : you will be prompted for locating the I386 directory. To do so, please insert the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM) 4. Input the IP address for this server that is same as the planned IP in Section 7.2 5. Follow the instruction of Windows Setup to perform the other steps 6. Restart the server 7. After the server have restarted and re-logon as server administrator, select Administrator Tools(common) DHCP Manager 8. Select Server at menu bar and select Add 9. In Add DHCP Server to server list, Type the IP address for this server that is same as the planned IP in Section 7.2. 10. Select the DHCP server that you have just added 11. Select Scope at menu bar 12. Select Create will display the following windows Version 2.2 I- 5
1. In Start Address, type the Start IP address that you planned in Section 7.2 2. In End Address, type the End IP address. 3. In Subnet Mask, type 255.255.255.0 and press OK 4. Allow the system to activate the Scope that you added. Server printers and queues There are 3 printer series for SAMS / CDS printing at least, create 3 printers in NT4.0 Server. Please refer to the following table for printer drivers and dedicated printer names. For schools with HP LaserJet 5000, it can offer the substitution of NEC Dot matrix printer so that the HP LaserJet 5000 should be set to print A3 size as default paper.. For installation of Foxpro, please read the following cases. Case 1 Schools have old server and are running MS Foxpro 2.5b. The Appendix II (migrate SAMS/CDS File from old server) should be done first and then copy the revised files of Version 2.2 I- 6
Foxpro 2.5b from SAMS V4.1 and CDS V4.0 CD-ROM to the directory FOPROW under C:\APPS (Copy all files under CD-ROM's Foxprow directory) and create new share for this directory Case 2 Schools have old SAMS server and will run the version of VFP in new server that same in old server. For this case, The Appendix II (migrate SAMS/CDS File from old server) should be done first and then create new share for this directory Case 3 Schools have old SAMS server but the version of Visual Foxpro in new server is different to that in old server. For this case, you should run Server-base setup of Visual Foxpro. To do this, logon server from workstation by workstation local administrator and then map F: to C:\APPS from workstation, run Visual Foxpro setup with administrative installation of Visual Foxpro from into F:\VFP. Case 4 Schools have no old SAMS server. For this case, you should run Server-base setup of Visual Foxpro. To do this, logon server from workstation by workstation local administrator and then map F: to C:\APPS from workstation, run Visual Foxpro setup with administrative installation of Visual Foxpro from into F:\VFP. NAV Install NAV into server with proper settings. Service Pack 6.0a Install the service pack after the whole basic installation of NT Server 4.0 being completed. Version 2.2 I- 7
