Sales of commercial operational intelligence platform software will grow faster than 30% per year, annually, through 2017. Recommendations Offload event data capture, filtering, mathematical calculations and pattern detection to real-time operational intelligence software, to provide better situation awareness to business people. Where the cause and sequence of events are understood, use leading indicators to predict situations of threat or opportunity before they occur so that the response can be proactive. Where this is not possible, use the system to improve the outcome by reducing the time lag between events and responses. Business people should choose the key performance indicators that they will use; control the layout of the dashboards that they will see Specify the conditions under which they want to receive alerts and the channels to be used to notify them. 10
Many decisions require human judgment. 11
Decision management techniques Rule engines are relevant where business policies can be expressed in a decision table, decision tree or similar rule set. For example, scoring services that are generated by predictive analytics tools are often more appropriate when the decision model will be derived from historical data using statistical analysis of probabilities. Simulation techniques are used when an analytical model with an equation cannot be used; simulation models are run repeatedly with random input variables to see how the outputs vary. Case-based-reasoning decision tools are used when the results of a similar situation can be applied to a new situation. Optimization tools are used to automatically find the most feasible solution in the context of certain constraints. 12
Let computers make decisions that are structured and repeatable to conserve people's time and attention for the thinking and actions that computers cannot do. 13
What About the Question Marks? And Dogs? Gartner: Through 2015, 80% of businesses will fail to improve customer service costs due to the absence of a crossfunctional approach to creating an analytics framework that includes social media. 14
Beginning in 2013, the imperative will be to expand beyond providing obvious analytics and BI to also providing invisible analytics.this will be a gradual transition. 15
