Cosmetology Associate in Applied Science Diploma Certificate

COSMETOLOGY Program Description Cosmetology The Cosmetology Curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills. Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics. Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses. Because the use of computers is integral to this curriculum, some courses are delivered in an online format for the A.A.S and Diploma programs. NOTE: The NC State Board has a time limit on multiple choice questions given to pass the licensure exam with no extended time allowed. Occupational Profile Cosmetology Cosmetologists focus on providing hair, skin and nail care services to enhance the appearance and image of consumers. These services include the shampooing, cutting, coloring, and styling of hair. They advise clients on how to select products to care for their hair at home. In addition, cosmetologists are able to give manicures, pedicures, and scalp and facial treatments; provide makeup analysis; and enhance wigs and assist with hair replacement. Unique Aspects of the Cosmetology Program Scheduling of Classes The Cosmetology program at Sandhills Community College can be taken as a day or evening program. New students are accepted fall and spring semesters. Each level of student has its own unique lab. In addition to being offered on the Pinehurst campus, Cosmetology is offered in Hoke County at the Hoke County High School. Facilities Cosmetology students enjoy a simulated salon environment which allows advanced students to offer services to the public for a minimal fee. Senior-level students have the opportunity to practice for the state licensing theory exam using on-line Distance Learning classes. Salon Services Advanced students offer a variety of services to the public on an ongoing basis. This allows students to become proficient in all types of clients and to be able to access the needs of each particular case. Students also learn to keep records, answer the phone, schedule clients and practice professional customer service skills. Internships The North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology allows us to offer an internship opportunity to students who qualify. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, students are allowed to complete five percent of their education in an approved salon. Once a student has enrolled in the SCC Co. Op. classes (COE 111 and COE 115) he/she can begin training in an approved salon. All forms and state board rules will be explained to the student and the salon owner, and both must sign the forms and submit them to the college for submission to the NC State Board of Cosmetology prior to beginning. Licensure Cosmetologists are required to be licensed to practice in North Carolina. Our graduates have a very high passage rate on the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Exam.
