1 Industrial Technology Kimberly Slacum 2005 graduate of Orangefield High School Major: Automotive Technology I chose Lamar State College-Port Arthur because of the Automotive Technology Program. I want to work in the automotive field, and I saw that the college offered the program on a commercial. It is a great program, and I will be well prepared when I enter the work force. Just like they say, Lamar-Port Arthur is a great place.

2 160 Industrial Technology Department of Industrial Technology The Industrial Technology Department is dedicated to providing the residents of Port Arthur, south Jefferson County and contiguous communities with the high-quality vocational- technical training demanded by the modern labor market. Accomplishment of this goal dictates that Industrial Technology programs endow students with extensive technical skills as well as the ability to solve problems, make decisions, adapt to change and communicate effectively. Each program monitors the employment skills needed by the labor force through close association with an advisory committee composed of representatives from regional businesses and industry. Curriculum, equipment and student competencies are adapted as necessary to the quickly-changing needs of employers. Associate degree and certificate programs contain carefully-sequenced courses designed around student outcomes and include general education components which foster problem-solving and communication skills. The department also strives to maintain a faculty that is knowledgeable in the latest technological advances in their field and committed to teaching excellence by providing opportunities for professional growth and development. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program offers a two-year course sequence leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. Also available is a Certificate of Completion that can be completed in one year or less. Both tracks provide education and training to help the student pursue entry-level employment in the field. The associate degree program incorporates a broader range of coursework and more extensive training to enhance a graduate s ability to compete for higher-paying jobs. Qualified students may be eligible for internships at area dealerships and independent shops. Interns attend classes part of the week and are paid to work at the local repair facility at other times. The intern is supervised by an experienced professional who acts as a mentor. This internship is governed by an agreement between the student and the employer. This program was reviewed and approved by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF), a division of Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E). A maximum of 27 semester credit hours may be awarded to students pursuing an A.A.S. degree in Automotive Technology who have passed all parts of the Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) Exam. See the Credit By Examination section of this catalog for more information. For students who require basic entry-level employment in the automotive service industry, the Level 1 Technology Certificate is a two-semester program with an internship. There also is a Level 1 Technician Certificate which has no internship and can be completed in a single semester. Industrial Technology
