1 Beaufort College Academy The Beaufort College Academy is a unique opportunity for area high school students to earn a significant amount of college credit, tuition free, through Beaufort County Community College s Huskins and Dual Enrollment programs. The goal of the Beaufort College Academy is to maximize the instructional offerings at both the secondary and post secondary levels to provide the greatest educational benefit to the citizens of our area. A key benefit for students planning to pursue four year degrees and beyond is the opportunity to complete (tuition free) the 44 SHC General Education Core in the Associate in Arts program required by the UNC System while still enrolled in high school. A parallel benefit is to provide students planning to pursue technical careers in areas such as Nursing, Computer Science, Industrial Technology or Cosmetology with the opportunity to complete a sizeable portion of their course work (tuition free) while in high school and be prepared academically to transition into the appropriate AAS or diploma program at BCCC with no remediation. All BCCC Associate Degree programs recommend that students complete a math sequence that includes a minimum of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students planning to participate in any of the Beaufort College Academy options should complete these courses by the end of the 11 th grade. Academy courses are available to students from public, private, and home schools. Students must meet all BCCC admission requirements and course prerequisites, take the college s placement tests, and be approved by their school administrator. Placement tests are given to all tenth graders in the Beaufort County Schools at their home school in the spring. Students will have to buy their own textbooks unless purchased by their school or school system. Students will receive grades at the end of each semester and all coursework will be included on an official BCCC transcript. College credit is earned for all courses completed successfully. The awarding of high school credit is determined by the administrator of each school or school system. Students should consult with their individual school for details concerning high school credits for Academy courses. Course Offerings Planned for Note All courses are taught on the BCCC instructional calendar. Fall semester begins on August 18 and runs through December 17. Spring semester begins on January 6 and runs through May 12. All students participating in the Academy will be required to begin their coursework when college classes begin on August 18. Information For additional information about enrollment in the Academy, please contact Mrs. Crystal Ange, Dean of Student Services, at [email protected] or call For specific information on the academic programs offered through the Academy, contact Mr. Wesley Beddard, Dean of Instruction, at [email protected] or call
2 College Transfer Option All courses taught as a part of the College Transfer Option are included in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement with the UNC System. If a student completes the entire course sequence, he/she will meet the 44 SHC General Education Core in the Associate in Arts program as required by the UNC universities. All of the classes included in the College Transfer Option will be offered on the BCCC campus and are scheduled to be broadcast to Northside, Southside, and Washington high schools. Science classes have a lab requirement on the BCCC campus. Classes with fewer than a total of 12 students at the receiving sites may not be broadcast to the high schools, but will be available to students on the BCCC campus. 3 To complete the requirements of the General Education Core, students will also need to take one additional Humanities class, which may be taken online, at night, or during the summer between the junior and senior years. Students should consult Dixon Boyles, Division Chair for Arts and Sciences at BCCC, for appropriate courses. Students may also elect to take just the first period offerings or the fourth period offerings and earn hours of college transfer credit with no tuition costs. This may be appealing to student athletes or students who do desire to take fewer college level classes while in high school. Pre-Nursing Option Students in the Pre-Nursing option should take the same course sequence as the College Transfer Option outlined above with the following exception: BIO 168 and BIO 169 (Anatomy and Physiology I & II) should be substituted for BIO 111 and BIO 112 during the senior year. These classes are available to high school students at the following times on the BCCC campus on a space available basis: Fall Semester: Monday 6:30-9:20 PM BIO 168 Anatomy and Physiology I* Spring Semester: Monday 6:30-9:20 PM BIO 169 Anatomy and Physiology II* *Students must also attend a lab session on the BCCC campus each week at one of the times below: Wednesday 6:30-9:20 PM Saturday 9:00-11:50 AM Saturday 1:00-3:50 PM Note: Admission to BCCC s nursing programs is very competitive. Completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to the programs. Candidates for nursing programs should take chemistry in high school. All courses included above will count toward the AA or AS college transfer programs at BCCC; however, BIO 168 and 169 do not count towards the General Education Core required by UNC System institutions. All courses listed in the College Transfer and Pre-Nursing Options are included in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement with the UNC System. Career Skills Options All of the courses in the Career Skills Options are taught on the BCCC campus. Please note meeting times/days as some are offered in the evenings.
