Welcome to the 2010 HCCY Karnavali Dance West River Event Centre Saturday, January 30, 2010
Message from the HCCY Board of Directors The Hellenic-Canadian Community of York Region (HCCY) was incorporated in 1980 to preserve and foster Greek culture and traditions among individuals residing in the 9 cities which make up York Region. The HCCY is celebrating its 30 th anniversary this year and we are planning a gala celebration to honour this milestone in our history. The HCCY organizes a number of events each year, including the Karnavali Dance, and was very proud this year to have participated in the Olympic Torch Relay when the torch made its way through Richmond Hill. Congratulations to our own Stephanie Parigoris, an HAY student, who held the Torch for 300 metres along Yonge Street near Highway 407 on December 17. On February 25, we will hold our first of a series of evening networking seminars for members to meet on a social basis and perhaps do business together. The first seminar will be on The Economy in 2010 and Tips for Investors by HCCY V.P. and board member Steve Demestihas, a Vice President and financial advisor with CIBC Wood Gundy. Thank you to all of you who support our community fellow community Hellenes, friends of York Region Hellenes, our sponsors, and all those who worked so hard to make tonight s event a success. We wish for you all to have a most enjoyable evening!! Hellenic Academy of York (HAY) The major program offered by the HCCY is our Saturday Greek school, known officially as the York Hellenic Educational Society, or as Hellenic Academy of York (HAY). The HAY is now in its 7 th year of operation and was incorporated as a registered charity in December 2008. The HAY is very popular among parents and boasts a wonderful staff of educators who are caring and inspiring to our students. The HAY has enjoyed tremendous success, growing from approx. 140 students in 2008/9 to 180 students in 2009/10. Tonight, students in Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 will entertain us with a small preview of traditional Greek dances. If you have questions about our school, please send an email to: info@hccy.ca or call the HCCY at (905) 313-1000. A Note about Apokries In the Greek Orthodox tradition, Apokries is the preparation period before Lent. The word, when divided in two is translated as from meat, or Apo Kreas. These three weeks before Lent, Apokries, are marked by wonderful celebrations including food, family and masquerading. On the last day of Apokries, which this year will be Sunday March 1 st, there are usually elaborate parades and balls; the most famous Greek carnival parades are in Patra, Peloponese, and in Rethymno, Crete. The following day, Monday March 2nd, is known as Clean Monday and most families in Greece enjoy this holiday particularly by eating Lent lunches and flying kites in parks, as it marks the arrival of springtime, as well. During the three weeks of Apokries, children dress in creative costumes and have people try and guess who they are. See if you can discover some of the masked guests tonight!
