Military or College Recruiter Opt-Out Requires Response by September 13, 2014 The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires all public school districts to provide Junior and Senior students names, addresses and phone numbers to military and college recruiters, upon request. It also requires that the district notify parents of their right to request that the district not release their student s information without their consent. Parents may choose to exercise this right by submitting a WRITTEN request to remove their student s name from such lists. These letters should be sent to Hampton High School Guidance Department and will be made part of the student s file, and the student s name will be removed from such lists as requested. Unfortunately that written notice must be obtained each year so even if you opted out last year, please send in another note if you want to opt-out. Please note that schools are not the only source of this information so even if you opt-out, your family or student may receive calls or contacts from military or college recruiters. If you ask them not to contact you, they should not continue to call. PSAT - Wednesday, October 16, 2013 The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is a student s first official step on the road to college. It encourages students to start planning for life after high school by either jump-starting their college search process, or for some, introducing them to the concept of attending college. The PSAT is broken down into two (2) Critical Reading sections, two (2) Math sections and one (1) Writing Skills section. The PSAT Score Report gives students personalized feedback on their test performance, including suggestions on how to improve specific academic skills, plus complete answer explanations so students learn from their mistakes. This year the PSAT will be given on Wednesday, October 16 th. All students in grades 9 and 10 are required to take the test. Since the test is mandatory for all 9 th and 10 th graders, the district will cover the cost of the test and those students will be automatically registered. All juniors are encouraged to take the test as this is the year that based on your selection index score, you can qualify to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Since it is not mandatory for juniors to take the test, the cost of $16.00 will be imposed. Cash, checks or money orders should be made out in that amount to Hampton Township School District. Registration, for juniors only, begins Monday, September 23 rd and concludes on Friday, October 11 th, in the guidance office. There is no registration form students will sign up on a registration sheet with the secretary in the guidance office when they turn in their payment of $16.00. With the test being given during the school day all 9 th, 10 th and those 11 th graders opting to take the test will report to school at their regular time. For those 11 th graders not taking the test and all seniors, your day will actually begin at 10:30 am. Buses will only run during their regularly scheduled times in the morning so any juniors not taking the test and all seniors will be expected to either come on the bus or find alternate transportation for that day. Students in the building but not taking the test will be assigned to study hall on that day.
ASVAB Wednesday, December 4, 2013 The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be administered at Hampton High School on Wednesday, December 4 th during periods 1-5. This program is designed to help students learn more about themselves and the world of work, identify and explore potentially satisfying occupations, and develop an effective strategy to realize their goals. Students in grades 10-12 can register for the ASVAB between November 12 and November 27 by stopping in the Guidance Office and signing up with the secretary. Registration is limited to the first 60 students. There is no cost to take this test. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled once test results are in for parents and students to go over the test results. NEWS TO KNOW Attention Seniors! Seniors - the hectic pace of your Senior year has begun! Time management is essential in balancing schoolwork, extra-curricular activities, college visits, SAT and/or ACT s and college applications. Your counselors can help in guiding you through the college selection and admission process. In addition to meeting with students one-on-one, the Guidance Department sponsors visits from college representatives, works in conjunction with the national testing programs and the NCAA, and assists in the completion of applications for admissions and scholarships. Counselors met with all seniors in their English classes on August 28 and August 29, to go over the college application process particularly using Naviance and the Common Application. If students have questions, they should stop in Guidance or the College and Career Center during lunch or study hall. COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER and NAVIANCE FAMILY CONNECTION The College and Career Center at Hampton High School is open for the 2013-2014 school year. This room, located in C308 near the cafeteria, is a resource for students to focus on post-secondary planning. The room is available for student use throughout the day. It is staffed full-time by our guidance paraprofessional, Mrs. Sondej, and on an alternating schedule by the counselors during the lunch periods. Students have access to a variety of resources in the College and Career Center, including college catalogs, scholarship information when available, and reference books regarding career and college opportunities. The latest addition to the College and Career Center is Naviance a new, more extensive web-based college research and planning tool for Hampton High School students, parents and school counselors. The website helps to guide individual students through the entire college planning, application and decision process. Students can search for scholarships, explore careers, take interest inventories and investigate their learning style. Students will also be able to review academic and admission data for colleges across the United States. Through the Family Connection section of Naviance, the counseling department will be able to share information with parents and their students about upcoming meetings and events, local scholarship opportunities, summer classes and events, and other Web resources for college and career information. As different features are added or activated in Naviance Family Connection, we will let you know.

There is a lot of information posted for reference and news items are updated on a regular basis. Information available includes SAT and ACT dates, the Post-Secondary Planning Guide, local scholarship information when it becomes available, the guidance newsletters, and the Program of Studies. Reminders for upcoming events are added as necessary. Some things are re-posted by the webmaster to the main page of the high school but not everything can be re-posted there so you should check in on the Guidance site frequently. COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES VISIT HHS Attention: Juniors and Seniors Representatives from a variety of colleges, vocational schools and military branches are scheduled to visit Hampton High School. The college visits occur during September and October with a few in November, and typically last one class period. An informational session followed by a Q&A period provides an opportunity for students to gain greater knowledge of the school and make important contacts. The vocational schools and military branches typically set up tables during the lunch hours rather than schedule formal visit sessions. How to attend college visits during class time: 1. Sign up with Mrs. Sondej in the College and Career Center, and obtain a pass at least one day prior to the scheduled visit.
2. Ask the appropriate teacher for permission to be absent from class by signing your college visit pass. (Teachers have the right to refuse due to previously scheduled tests, assignments or if they believe you cannot afford to miss the class.) 3. Bring the signed pass to the College and Career Center as your admission ticket at the time of the visit. Mrs. Sondej will direct you to the location of the visit. Remember to check the Visit List posted outside the guidance office and outside the Career & Counseling Center and listen to the announcements for additions and/or changes.
