I encourage you to respond formally, conceptually, and emotionally during the class critique or in one-on-one work discussion. I strongly believe in the importance of originality and creativity to express one s graphic work showing individual expressions, and unique ideas. As a student wanting to learn about the field of graphic design, it is your responsibility to read the textbook, submit assignments on the due dates, study for the exams, participate in classroom activities, critiques, attend class, and enjoy yourself by being creative and inventive Be Original. Online Assignment Online assignments is one of the 25% of your final grade, utilize your time wisely and make time to do them. They are not difficult to do and check for each Grading Criteria because that is how you are graded and points deducted. Assessments General, Online Assignments & Quizzes... 25% Midterm and Final Assignments & Exams... 50% Class Review Participation (Rough Drafts), Working in Class, Class Critique Participation... 10% Attendance Presence in Class... 15% TOTAL GRADE... 100% Instructor Requirements As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to: Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derived Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, critiques, and lectures Description of any special projects or assignments Inform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness and make up Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any special projects or assignments Arrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required To be successful in this class, it is the student s responsibility to: Attend class and participate in class discussions, critique and activities Read and comprehend the textbook Complete the required assignments and exams Ask for help when there is a question or problem Keep copies of all paperwork, including this syllabus, handouts and all assignments Attendance A. Attendance is critical. Your success in this course will be the direct result of your attendance for each class and your participation throughout the course. B. In this class participation is measured based on the following criteria: arriving to class on time; paying attention during lecture; attentive watching and listening to ARTC 1317 page 5
instructional videos; respectful listening when I or your peers are speaking; your ability to be fully engaged in your learning without texting, checking your phone or email, or participating in other digital distractions; your ability to stay awake, etc. If you are unable to meet the above criteria, participation points will be subtracted throughout the semester. Keep in mind you start the semester with ALL your points, so don t lose them! If you are distracting others in your lack of participation, you will hear from me via email or in a short face-to-face conference before or after class. C. No longer attending or participating in this class does not constitute withdrawal from this course, nor does the student s notification to the instructor that the student wishes to be dropped. It is the student s responsibility to fill out a schedule change form at the registration desk to officially drop this class. Failure to do so may result in the grade of F. D. If you are going to be absent and miss class for one or more class meetings, please let me know by email. Only use HCC email account or use Eagle Online email to contact me, not your personal email (e.g., Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.). And this applies to any email you send me concerning the class. Student Assignments A. It is your responsibility to read and comprehend the textbook B. Complete the general/online assignments, midterm and final projects. C. All assignments and lecture notes are posted on Eagle Online. Every assignment will have a critique. It is critical to participate in all online graphic design critique discussions, because your critique participation and feedback will be considered when assessing your final grade. D. Assignment deadline dates will be announced or posted in the assignment sheet. Assignments turned in late will automatically lower your grade, one grade down for each day missed, from 1 st day missed - an A grade to B, 2 nd day missed - B grade to C and so forth E. You must create and do your own work to receive a grade. Any graphic design assignments or projects that are aided or helped by someone else are considered a Plagiarized work / assignment considered Cheating. F. Be honest Original and be inventive in all your design assignments. Do not copy or use existing photos/graphic designs/paintings/sculptures/online images that preexist as finished graphic design or art published work online or any hard copy publications created by someone else (e.g., books, magazines, ads, posters, t-shirt, etc.). G. Grades on each assignment or a group of assignment will be posted on Eagle online. Any missing works that are not submitted will be graded as an F submit all assignment/project you do in class. H. The student is responsible for obtaining the information about the class work missed due to absences or being tardy if you are absent for one day, check online for assignments posted. Late work is accepted (except Midterm/Final Projects), whether or not your work appears finished and complete when critiqued will be factored into the grade. To avoid problems, do not miss deadlines for rough drafts, homework assignments, or projects. Do not let your ARTC 1317 page 6
work pile up so that you are compelled to create something the night before or work that utilizes less than desirable artwork. I. Check Grading Criteria on each assignment handout for specific requirements. J. Ask the instructor for clarification if you do not understand the assignment or project. K. Again, Do not copy graphic design created by someone else or create similar work. Plagiarism/Cheating is inexcusable and will result in an F for the assignment and possible expulsion from the class. If the graded artwork is discovered later by the instructor to be a copy or look similar to other work, the grade will be changed to a failing grade even after the end of the semester.
