ATHENA - Goals A set of best practice guidelines for LEAs, police, first responders and citizens for the use of new media, supporting tools and technologies in crisis situations A suite of prototype software tools to enhance the ability of LEAs, police, first responders and citizens in their use of mobile and smart devices in crisis situations How can we use big data to achieve these goals?
ATHENA and Big Data VOLUME - Social Media In a crisis real time information even more important: - Police - First Responders - Volunteers - Citizens Twitter 284 million active users 500 million tweets per day Facebook 864 million daily active users Instagram YouTube ATHENA uses social media crawlers to capture this data in real time and sent immediately for processing 300 million active users 30 billions photos shared 100 hours of video uploaded per minute
ATHENA and Big Data VELOCITY - Speed of Change 6000 tweets per second - on an average day In a crisis many more than that and more tweets focused on a single event. Data moving between multiple social media platforms, to and from the app and the command and control centre In a crisis multiple events are happening in multiple locations at different times ATHENA is filtering, monitoring, organising this data using carefully curated crisis taxonomies, sophisticated location detection, timestamping and categorisation to detect events
ATHENA and Big Data TEXT Unstructured Colloquial Brief Differences : Tweet Retweet Reply Source VARIETY Different data sources and forms IMAGES METADATA VIDEO Geo-locations Timestamps Popularity - retweets, favouriting, sharing
ATHENA and Big Data VERACITY Uncertainty in the data Can we trust what is written on social media? Filtering - remove the noise Rate the Credibility Sentiment Volume can help us corroborate Metadata Data Import Filter Categorization Concept Extraction Contextual Extraction Sentiment Analysis Data Export
ATHENA and Big Data VALUE - For LEAs Crisis Command and Control Intelligence Dashboard Deployed in police command and control during a major incident Crisis Map - location of all crisis events/ reports Filtering by validation/c ategories/ read/ priority/ credibility Reports verified by C&C before being posted to the public Crisis visualisations/ filtering/ querying/ monitoring Communication with the public via social media
ATHENA and Big Data VALUE - For Citizens and First Responders ATHENA Mobile Application
ATHENA and Big Data ATHENA integrates large amounts of social media data with data from a dedication mobile application to create value for police, first responders and citizens during a crisis Challenges in collecting, filtering, processing and presenting the data to users whilst maintaining validity Empowering citizens to get involved in the response effort - digital volunteers - through mobile application and social media Providing the police and LEAs with real time situational awareness of on-going crises
