Contact Information 6 The School The University was founded in 1943 by a group of Mexican businessmen. Shortly after, similar associations were created to expand the campus and form new campuses in other cities. Today, 33 campuses independently exist across Mexico having never received public funding. Tecnologico de Monterrey aims at aspiring student s needs and education within a society. The hope their students will become internationally competitive with integrity, ethical standards and a humanistic outlook in their professional fields. Grading scale The grades you get in Mexico do no affect the G.P.A. If a student fails, S/he doesn t get credits for that, but still the grade is not transferred. All exams are scheduled during the exam period and will be made available once the student registers for the courses. People and culture Mexico is a traditionalistic country, where the hierarchies between social positions, age, sex and cultural level are observed. The people of Monterrey tend to be very warm and welcoming to tourists especially those who are not fluent with the Spanish language. Their culture is one that values hard-work and self-reliance. Cost of Living Housing There are three common housing options for international students, they are: Residence Halls There are 7 buildings on campus and 9 buildings off campus opened to both men and women however none of the buildings are co-ed. Host Family Housing Generally, the fee for living with a host family includes a shared room with another international student, three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry facilities and utilities. It is a great way to experience the Mexican culture and kind nature. Off-Campus Housing A wide variety of apartments are available for Campus Mazatlan International students. Costs for the regular school year and Summer semester are estimated from US$270 to US500 per month and students may share with other international or Mexican students. Grocery prices are usually about 70% of what international students are used to in their home countries. An estimated cost for books and materials is US$250 per semester, and they may be bought in Campus. Though in most classes students are required to get photocopies, so it is actually very cheap to buy those materials (it s about US$20).
Transportation Campus Mazatlan is located in the suburbs of the city and is around 20 minutes from downtown and from the Golden zone. Students have the choice of using either private or public bus service or a taxi. Admission Process The student must be nominated by your exchange program office. Then it is necessary to send by a type of courier mail (please don't use any regular mail) the following documents: 1. Tecnológico de Monterrey Admission Application Form. That can be found on the website or be requested via e-mail at ip.mty@itesm.mx. 2. The most recent School Transcript with a minimum average of 80 (Mexican system) or GPA of 2.5 (USA system). Cases of average between 70-79 (GPA 2.0-2.5) will be considered at length. If the student doesn t speak Spanish, s/he can take a beginners course in Spanish. In order to make sure the student is registered for courses that meet his/her language skills, the university provides an online Spanish Placement Test to asses the right level. With those results, the academic adviser can help the student to plan an appropriate course of study based on his/her proficiency in Spanish.
