Updated information will be sent by the International Office. Masters Courses: NOTE: At Nova we have a limited number of places in each course. In this way the enrolment is done within a Bidding system. The bidding system for enrollment is a system that several universities across Europe are using in order to allow students to enroll in the courses they want due to the limited places. In this way, each student is given a certain number of points and distributes the points by the courses. In this way, students who really want to take a certain course will much probably give more points to that one than to another they want less. It works like a bid. In the end, the students who offered the highest bids will get a place in the course. This system does not guarantee, however, that all students are placed according to their first preferences: in this way, one is advised to have alternative choices approved by the home university. We have a period of changes where students may change their options, pending availability of places. Enrollment is done online on a platform to which the student will have access with a username and password. Workload The Nova Masters Programs are full time programs offered from Monday to Saturday during working hours. Exchange students make their choice from a list of available elective courses for exchange students. A typical Nova SBE student takes 30 ECTS credit units per semester. Workload and Assessments: Type of courses offered: Full courses take 12 weeks of class work and are worth 7 ECTS; Short courses take 6 weeks of class work and account for 3,5 ECTS each). The courses can be lectured once a week with the duration of three hours in a row OR be lectured in 2 sessions of 1,5 hours per week. Besides these classes, faculty also provides open office time for individual consultations. Exchange students can enroll up to a maximum of 32 ECTS. Assessment Course assessment lies entirely with the course instructor and which may include group projects, weekly assignments, quizzes and presentations. The course instructor will provide details on information on the first day of class. Course syllabi will also be made available through course instructors. All courses have a final exam which takes place after the teaching period has ended. Grades are given on a scale of 0 20 (10 is considered the threshold pass grade). To pass a course students must obtain a grade of 10 or higher. Examinations for Full courses are scheduled at the end of the semester during which they are offered; for short courses the examinations will be offered at the end of each half (please see the calendar section). There is no procedure to improve a grade. There is no possibility to re sit an exam or enroll in a course for a second time, once a student obtains the credits of a course, by obtaining a grade of a least 10. The student must keep the grade obtained in the course, which will be included in the transcript. Grading scale Results are awarded on a local grading scale from 0 to 20, and the minimum mark required for approval is 10. A mark of 20 points is the highest possible mark obtainable and corresponds to outstanding performance. Any mark below 10 is a fail. School also adopts the ECTS grading scale (see table below). This is based on the class percentile (similar but not identical to the class rank of student cohorts of the previous three years) of passing students in the overall assessment of a given course. ECTS grades do not have a direct fixed correspondence to the local grading scale.

Classes are held at the Humanas venue, located at Av. de Berna, n. 26 C, P 1050 LISBOA. More information at: The International Office will send the students detailed information regarding Portuguese Language courses. ILNOVA (Universidade Nova de Lisboa s Language Institute) also offers a large number of language courses. For more information please visit Student Nominations: Students looking to spend a semester at Nova SBE must be nominated by their home institution. Nominations must be handled directly by the home university to Nova SBE s International Office (exchangestudents@novasbe.pt). An exchange agreement must be in place prior to any mobility commencing. Nominations for the Fall semester must be received by 15 May. Nominations for the Spring semester must be received by 30 September. Accommodation: There is an active market in Lisbon for rental housing where exchange students can find a nice place to stay. The university holds only a very limited number of vacancies in the student residence which is on campus student (Residência Alfredo de Sousa). The International Office provides assistance students in finding suitable accommodation upon arrival in Lisbon. Contact: exchangestudents@novasbe.pt for more information. Living Expenses: Student expenses in Lisbon will naturally depend on their living situation and on their own spending habits. 4 In order to have access to public health care, E.U. citizens, who are not residents in Portugal, must bring their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) issued by their home countries. The EHIC is valid Health Insurance: in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries. Facilities: Other students are strongly recommended to have a health insurance with international validity covering the entire duration of their stay in Portugal. Library/documentation centers, computer facilities (including e mail accounts for all exchange students), wireless internet access throughout the main building, catering facilities, study areas. Several student organizations and clubs are available to exchange students.
