Our College of Hospitality, which has been accredited by the University of Gloucestershire, Chelthenham in the UK, is located in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. SHML will teach and train exceptional students in the arts and science of personal service, fine foods and beverages, efficient front of house operations and business management proficiencies that luxury boutique hotels and resorts demand. Board of SHML Robert Arnold, a Swiss national, is a graduate of the world famous Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1998 he was awarded International Hotel Manager of the year by his peers in Australia. With 35 years experience in senior executive hotel management positions such as CEO, VP, GM with international companies such as Hilton International, Oberoi International, Intercontinental Hotels, and Leading Hotels of the World. Robert opened and managed many new 5 star hotels and resorts of the world. Peter Eberhardt, a Swiss national, is a graduate of the World famous Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne and has 25 years of opening and General Management experience in Hotels and Resorts in Switzerland and French Polynesia such as Hyatt, Accor and Movenpick. Peter is currently the joint owner of Sirius Hospitality, a company specialising in Hotel, Restaurant ownership, Hotel and Resort Management, Hospitality Consulting and Executive Search for the Hospitality industry. Urs Eberhardt, a Swiss national, also a graduate of Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, has had over 20 years of Senior General Management experience in several countries of the world. After consolidating his experience in Switzerland, he moved to Asia where he has successfully contributed to several top class hotel openings. His profession took him to places such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Mauritius. During his career he was privileged to work in hotels as the Gstaad Palace, Montreux Palace, Badrutt s Palace in St. Moritz, The Fullerton Singapore, Park Plaza Hotels International and Pansea Angkor, currently known as La Residence d Angkor, an Orient Express Hotel. Urs is currently the joint owner of Sirius Hospitality Services.
Facts of the Destination Lenk is located 1050 meters above sea level benefiting of a very mild climate in summer with a lot of sunshine and perfect snow conditions in winter. Situated at the end of magnificent Simmental, where the cows are said to be majestic, Lenk is also a popular destination for its natural mineral sulphuric sources. Here, the Wildstrubel massif forms one of the most beautiful valley closures in the Alps, and the perfect setting for the varied Bernese Oberland walking and winter sports paradise with its many natural attractions. Lenk has also established a reputation for itself with festivals and courses in the fields of culture and music. Summer The Simme originates from several white-foaming rock clefts the so-called seven sources beneath the Plaine Morte Glacier on the Rezlialp. United with water from the Wildhorn massif, which plummets down 100 m over the impressive Iffigen-Falls, the young Simme is born. A circular walk leads past the Iffigen-Falls to the seven sources and to the Simmen-Falls. Winter The ski areas around Lenk aren t dauntingly large, yet, with 50 lifts and a network of slopes extending to 185 kilometres, are still extremely varied. The Metschbahn cableway provides access to the entire Adelboden Lenk ski region with numerous simple to medium-difficulty slopes, wide carving slopes, interesting snowboard parks as well as a permanent race slope. A short ride with the romantic MOB train takes you to St. Stephan, the gateway to Gstaad Mountain Rides, where the rich and famous mingle and jingle. Throughout the year many Highligths and Top Events take place in Lenk and surroundings. How to get there By Plane There are three major international airports in Switzerland Geneva, Zurich and Basel. The nearest to our College is Geneva followed by Zurich. Flight reservations need to be made well in advance of your starting date, especially during the high seasons of Swiss tourism i.e. December, January, February June, July, August. By train Both Geneva and Zurich Airports have their own railway stations. For assistance about where and which train to take we encourage you to go the SBB counter who will guide you and where you can pay for your fare. By train from Zurich, you can travel comfortably via Bern-Spiez to Zweisimmen, or from Geneva you travel by train to Lausanne, Montreux, Gstaad and finally Zweisimmen where we will pick you up by the school bus. Train schedules normally change once a year, eventhough changes are not that significant, however you should check out their website at www.sbb.ch By car If you are coming by car: please take the Autobahn Bern A6, exit Wimmis/Zweisimmen; from Bern it is 40 km to the entrance to the Simmental valley, and 90 km up to Lenk. Academic Program All our courses, which are adapted to the requirements of the Education Board of the Canton Berne, have been designed by professional hoteliers who have had over 80 years combined operational experience in executive management of international hotels and resorts, and supported by exceptional academic teaching standards of the University of Gloucestershire, UK. SHML offers Students the possibility of 2 unique Swiss Diplomas and a BA (Hons) Degree in Strategic Hospitality Management. Successful completion of years 1 and 2 provides the Student with 2 certificates and a Swiss Diploma of Food and Beverage Management. Students successfully completing year 3 will graduate from SHML with a Swiss Higher Diploma (or as it is commonly known outside of Switzerland - an Associate Degree) in Hotel Management. Students successfully graduating from year 4 will receive a BA (Hons) Strategic Hospitality Management degree. Diploma of Food and Beverage Management This professional program prepares students for the Swiss Higher Diploma of Hotel Management Associate Degree program. Food and Beverage Service This course introduces learners to the central concepts of food service and to the skills, knowledge and responsibilities required for hotels and resorts. The knowledge and skills acquired in this unit will prepare learners for supervisory roles in the restaurants of international 5 star hotels and resorts. Culinary Arts and Sciences This course builds on the skills that have already been developed by preparing students to fulfil duties of different kitchen departments, such as Main Kitchen, Pastry and Bakery through theoretical learning and functional training within the college s kitchens. The courses join academic theory and trade based learning (practical classes) with specialized internships in the Swiss hospitality industry. It aims at providing students with excellent operational and supervisory skills, first-rate knowledge and admirable attitude in Food & Beverage Management. On completion of the SHML Diploma in Food and Beverage Management, students will continue their studies and complete the SHML Higher Diploma of Hotel Management (associate degree). SHML-Higher Diploma of Hotel Management (Associate Degree) This professional program prepares students for the BA (Hons) Strategic Hospitality Degree. This final hotel operations semester will prepare hospitality students to fulfil the managerial and supervision functions of the principal departments of a national or international hotel or resort. This training will incorporate operational details, but with an emphasis that will be placed on supervisory and managerial principles. The courses join academic
theory and trade based learning (practical classes) with specialized internships in the Swiss hospitality industry. It aims at providing students with excellent operational and supervisory skills, first-rate knowledge and admirable attitude in Hotel Management. On completion of the SHML Higher Diploma, students continue their studies and complete the BA (Hons) degree; however, Students have the possibility of starting their professional careers at this stage and returning later to complete their Degrees. BA (Hons) Strategic Hospitality Management During semesters 7 & 8, you will build upon your previously acquired technical and operational managerial competencies. You will also develop confidence and improve your ability in a range of vital management skills, including Informational Technology, Financial Management, Marketing and Human Resources. Upon completion of the program, you will be set for future success as you venture out into the global hospitality and tourism industries or post-graduate study. This honours degree program fully prepares students to enter the hospitality industry with confidence and particularly as it develops basic management theories and competencies using a range of teaching and learning processes and in-depth individual research. MBA & MSC, Post Graduate Together with our Education Partner we will offer a full range of MBA & MSC. Post Graduate Courses are available in various subjects, ranging from Environmental Sustainability to Spa & Club Management and Culinary Academy. Internships In Switzerland, internships are a very important part of the hospitality educational process as it offers students a wonderful opportunity to put into practice learning outcomes from the previous college semester. SHML follows this important practice and will help all students find good internship jobs in Switzerland. Internships allows the students to practice their language skills, allow discoveries of new destinations, provide a paid full work experience, increase employability with certificates of employment, and open the doors to a permanent job. All students are required to complete three internships, the first two must be done in Switzerland and the third can by special request be made overseas. Preparatory Course English is the official teaching and learning language at SHML. If your English knowledge is deemed insufficient you will be required to complete a 2 month English language preparatory course.
Life at the Campus A home away from home! The campus is a fully operational hotel that has been recently renovated and is located in the centre of Lenk. Facilities at the campus include: Rooms are either for single or double occupancy and have their own bathrooms with bath or shower, hairdryers, cupboards and natural lighting with heating. The bedrooms include flat screen TVs, new beds, carpeting, desks and good lighting. Lenk offers a large variety of summer and winter sports and activities: Depending upon the season, students can participate in such sports as volleyball, basketball or swimming. There is an on-campus gym and fitness centre, where they can use the equipment free of charge. In summer there are long walking and trekking trails, an 18 hole golf course (10 km), swimming, horseback riding, bicycle, mountain biking, tennis, paragliding, etc. In winter, students can ski, snowboard, heli-skiing, cross country, sledge, horseback riding, skating, paragliding, curling, etc. Sports & Activities Medical Facilities Public facilities include a library, lounge with fire place, bar and restaurants, gym, sauna, steam bath, outdoor swimming pool and gardens as well as an in-house laundry. Wireless Internet is available throughout the campus. We will ensure that you feel comfortable and are well taken care of. It is important that you are happy during your years in Lenk. A few minutes away is Gstaad, one of Switzerland s leading resorts where the rich and famous mingle and jingle. In summer it organizes a full calendar of events, including the Swiss Open a major tennis tournament on the ATP Tour, the FIV Beach Volley Grand Slam and the Menuhin Music Festival. So, if you are tempted by some sports you have never tried before, lessons and equipment rental can be easily arranged. Excursions to Gstaad (30 minutes), Geneva (2 hours), Bern (1.5 hours), Zurich (2 hours), Milan (3.5 hours). In case of emergency, ambulance-helicopter transfer to the University hospital in Bern takes less than 30 minutes.
