VENICE Venice is one of the most interesting and lovely places in the world. This sanctuary on a lagoon is virtually the same as it was six hundred years ago, which adds to the fascinating character. Venice has decayed since its heyday and is heavily touristed (there are slightly more tourists than residents), but the romantic charm remains. This place may not seem huge but it is and is made up of different boroughs. The most famous is the area comprising the 118 islands in the main districts that are called "Sestieri" and they are: Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce and San Marco, where the main monuments and sights are located. Other main districts are Isola Della Giudecca and Lido di Venezia. Other important islands include Murano, Torcello, San Francesco del Deserto, Burano, and several others. 4
BARDOLINO Bardolino is situated on Lake Garda at the widest point half-way along the Verona side. Its mild climate allowsof the growth of typical Mediterranean plants: olives, cypresses, oleanders, laurels, and vineyards prosper on the hills which surround the centre, which stretches towards the lake with two characteristic projections, formed over the centuries by the two rivers. In recent decades tourism has developed to support the traditional farming economy. Bardolino boasts about sixty hotels with an overall total of 4000 beds. The typical local products of wine, oil and fish all go to create excellent traditional meals, which can be tasted in the hotels, refined restaurants and the numerous country inns. Wine is the protagonist of many celebrations: in May the Feast of Bardolino Chiaretto (Clear Bardolino), in October the Feast of Grapes and of Bardolino wine, in November the Feast of Bardolino Novello (new Bardolino) and from the middle of September to the middle of October the Grapes therapy. 5
GENOA A city rich in art and a major seaport, of flourishing trade and commercial exchange, Genoa is one of the most surprising cities in Italy. Long ignored by conventional tourist routes, Genoa offers its visitors incredible attractions and a stunning artistic heritage. Its medieval old town -- the biggest in Europe -- is an intricate labyrinth of alleyways, where among the shops, restaurants, and local stores, visitors can catch sight of the city's noble past in its 16th century palazzos, baroque edifices, and Romanesque churches, looming over the little piazzas. The Columbus Celebration of 1992 inspired a huge project of urban restoration and renovation, restoring to the city an ancient source of pride: the area containing the Porto Antico (Old Port), the Aquarium, and the museum-rich Strada Nuova. Today this area stands as a testimony to Genoa's lively renewal. 6
CAMOGLI Only 30 minutes from Genova, Camogli is a fishing village with magnificent decorated palaces. Here you can sample traditional cheese focaccia di Recco and spend the day relaxing in the beautiful beach overlooking the green hill or go hiking on the trails of the Natural Park of Portofino. The views of sea, sky, rocks and green are unforgettable, the light is bright and the scents of the Mediterranean intoxicated. 7
FLORENCE Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello, and the Accademia. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural genius. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the "newest" area of Florence, the Oltrarno. Be sure to set aside time to see the vast and varied art collection housed in the Pitti Palace. When you grow weary of museums and monuments, head outdoors. Spend a day at the Boboli Gardens or climb the hill to the church San Miniato al Monte to experience an enchanting view of Florence. 8
SIENA, SAN GIMINIANO, GREVE Tour visit to two highlights of Tuscany, the charming cities of Siena and San Gimignano. After traveling through the gorgeous Chianti countryside, visit the old town of Siena and the inside of the Basilica di San Domenico. Learn about Siena s famous 'contrades' neighborhoods on a visit to one of the city's contrada museums, and then head to San Gimignano. Visit San Gimignano 1300 Museum to see miniature models of the ancient city made, and sample local wine and sweets! Greve in Chianti (the old name was Greve; in 1972 was renamed Greve in Chianti after the inclusion of that area in the Chianti wine district) is a town and comune (municipality) in theprovince of Florence, Tuscany, Italy. It is located about 31 kilometres (19 mi) south of Florence on A1 highway, and 42 kilometres (26 mi) north of Siena. Sitting in the Val di Greve, it is named for the small, fast-flowing river that runs through it, is the principal town in the Chianti wine district which stretches south of Florence to just north of Siena. Until recently it has been a quiet, almost bucolic town because it was, and still is, well off the main roads. 9
SARDINIA Sardinia, as close to Tunisia as to mainland Italy and nearly grazing the French island of Corsica, is fiercely distinct and wildly colourful. This region of Italy is moored in the bluest waters of the Mediterranean. It boasts superb diving spots and a host of Roman ruins, as well as some of the most memorable cuisine in southern Europe. Sardegna no est Italia!, screams the graffiti, and you shouldn t underestimate how distinct Sardinia is from the mainland. With African-tinged flavours, a language all its own and a very peculiar take on cheese, Sardinia may be part of Italy, but ignore its independent spirit at your peril. 10
