Mansions Iconic summer cottages not to be missed No summer in Rhode Island is complete without a tour of Newport s storied mansions. Put The Breakers, the sprawling 13-acre estate that is the grandest of the summer cottages, or the French-inspired The Elms (its façade was inspired by the 18th-century Château d Asnières, with furnishings and interiors by Paris-based Jules Allard et Fils) on your list if you favor the grandiose. Marble House, constructed of some 500,000 cubic feet of marble, and Rosecliff, with its Chinese Tea House, are must-sees for those who prefer something beautiful and elegant. Rough Point, the rambling Gothic-style mansion where tobacco heiress Doris Duke spent much of her later life, boasts sweeping ocean views and expansive grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Looking for a place that s a little more, um, homey? The Isaac Bell House is an easily overlooked gem. Built in 1883, the house is a masterpiece of American Shingle Style architecture. And Chepstow, an 1860 Italianate villa that predates the Gilded Age building boom, is one of the few Newport mansions to retain most of its original furnishings. JOURNAL STAFF Details THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL / KATHY BORCHERS Astop in Newport wouldn t be complete without a visit to one of the famed mansions. Rosecliff, left, plays host to the Newport Flower Show each year. The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-Sur-Mer, Kingscote, the Isaac Bell House and Chepstow are Preservation Society of Newport County properties. For more information, including tour times and ticket prices, go to newportmansions.org. Rough Point is owned by The Newport Restoration Society, which was founded by Doris Duke in 1968. Classical music Chamber festivals and Music on the Hill By CHANNING GRAY JOURNAL ARTS WRITER NEWPORT MUSIC FESTIVAL Hungarian pianist Gergely Bogányi returns to The Breakers July 11 to kick off the marathon Newport Music Festival, which presents 68 chamber concerts before it winds to a close July 27. Bogányi has made several stops in Newport, including in 2010 when he performed the complete piano works of Chopin in 10 recitals from memory. The Newport Music Festival holds three and sometimes four concerts a day in the city s lavish mansions. This year it will continue to test the waters beyond Aquidneck Island, staging a couple of concerts at Warwick s Aldrich Mansion. And as in previous summers, the event will zero in on composers with anniversary years. A series of concerts will salute Richard Strauss, born 150 years ago, while other concerts will feature the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, perhaps the most talented of Bach s composer sons. He turns 300. There will also be concerts dedicated to Mozart, Schubert and Brahms. The flashy Argentinean organist Hector Olivera will be back, along with pianist Frederic Chiu, who celebrates two decades with the festival. Swedish tenor Joachim Bäckström makes his American debut, and there will be an evening of world music. The festival holds its annual gala July 18 at Rosecliff, when patrons will dine in the ballroom while musicians from the festival serenade them. Two pianists and two percussionists will bring things to a close July 27, with arrangements of Ravel s Mother Goose and West Side Story. Tickets range from $25-$45. Call (401) 849-0700 or visit newportmusic.org. KINGSTON CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL The Kingston Chamber Music Festival gets under way July 23 on the campus of the University of Rhode Island with the first of eight concerts. The acclaimed violinist Hilary Hahn Violinist David Kim RYAN DONNELL performs the first week of the event, and founder David Kim, who is concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, returns for the second week. Getting Hahn to perform is a real coup for the festival, said manager Brian Mitchell. Hahn, who has toured with festival director and pianist Natalie Zhu, plays in the opening concert, performs a Mozart sonata July 25, and takes part in Messiaen s striking Quartet for the End of Time, July 27. There are six subscription concerts at URI with two additional concerts. Russian-born pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine will be playing Schubert, Chopin and his own arrangement of Stravinsky s Firebird Suite July 26 at the Fine Arts Center, and an evening of music by contemporary composer David Ludwig is slated for July 31 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 383 Old North Rd, Kingston. Tickets are $25. Call (401) 874-2106, or visit kingstonchambermusic.org. MUSIC ON THE HILL Meanwhile, the Music on the Hill series, which features Rhode Island-bred musicians who have gone on to careers elsewhere, opens at St. Gregory the Great Church in Warwick with more music of Richard Strauss. That will be followed by a June 12 culinary concert, which opens with appetizers and wine and ends with dessert, after a performance of Bach s magnificent concerto for two violins. That s at SS Rose and Clement Catholic Church in Warwick. Noted pianist Joseph Kalichstein returns to Rhode Island College June 13 with a program of Beethoven and Schubert, including the popular Trout Quintet. And for a change of pace, there ll be a jazz from the Peg Delaney Trio June 21 at the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich. The Miami String Quartet joins a group of festival players June 26 at Warwick s new Ocean State Theatre for Mendelssohn s youthful Octet. Tickets are $20-$35. Call (401) 738-5632 or (401) 884-8172, or visit musiconthehillri.com. LYMAN REALTY,INC. Dining Dock your boat for waterfront meals with views that can t be beat Take in the scenery at Nautika restaurant in East Greenwich. To dock and dine, there s transient dockage at the East Greenwich Marina. By GAIL CIAMPA JOURNAL FOOD EDITOR The Boat House Waterfront Dining in Tiverton and @The Deck in Newport took the top two spots (numbers 1and 2, respectively) on Open Table s Top 10 list of restaurants for outdoor dining in New England. These two places have something else in common, too: At both, one can dock a boat and head out to dinner. The Boat House has its own dock, which is the ideal situation. The views there on the Sakonnet River are beautiful and the setting peaceful for dining indoors or out. Transient dockage is available at Newport s West Wind Marina for both @The Deck and Dockside nightclub patrons as well. You can even make a dinner reservation right from waiteswharf.com. That kind of convenience is nice when summer days are hectic. Details In general, the East Bay has plenty of choices when it comes to docking and dining. For convenience, you can t beat The Lobster Pot in Bristol. The restaurant has its own dock plus three moorings for larger crafts. Once off the boat, there is plenty of outdoor and inside dining and in the cocktail lounge, where there is live music. Bristol s DeWolf Tavern is easily accessed by boats docked at Thames Street Landing. The upscale restaurant in the 1818 DeWolf building is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. There is outdoor seating overlooking Bristol Harbor and Narragansett Bay. It s equally easy to dock alongside Thames Waterside Bar & Grill in Bristol. Give them a ring and they ll even talk you in. That s a unique service. Trafford in Warren offers great views, dining on several levels and al @ The Deck, 1Waites Wharf, Newport, (401) 846-3600, waiteswharf.com. You can just pull your boat up to Warren s Wharf Tavern for dinner and you ll find water views from virtually every table. The restaurant has a buffet brunch every Sunday. For a clam shack with a view, there s a small dock at Quito s Restaurant in Bristol. The views, however, are big. In Barrington, the Bluewater Bar and Grill sits across from the Barrington Yacht Club. The contact page on the restaurant s website gives the name and number to arrange docking a boat. This is the new restaurant from chef Brian Thimme, whose previous venture was Stella Blues in Warren. The site was formerly Tyler Point Grille. In Newport, Forty 1North is one amazing setting with a marina, a restaurant (The Grill at Forty 1North) and one of the busiest outdoor bars you ll find. You can motor in for a magical night of dinner and drinks. But you ll most likely be jealous of the exquisite yachts docked here that cost much more than a home. Marina Café and Pub offers easy docking there on Goat Island where the feeling is more like Key West with seating right on the water. Drinks, seafood and views of the bridge all make this casual spot a summer THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL/ SANDOR BODO destination. Back in town, diners can dock at Sayer s Wharf, where the Newport Harbor Corp. owns the docks and the adjacent restaurants: The Mooring Seafood Kitchen and the seasonal Smoke House out front. The Mooring is elegant and Smoke House casual as can be. If you are a West Bay boater, head to Greenwich Cove, where there s transient dockage at East Greenwich Marina for Nautika and Blu on the Water. Nautika is owned by Mario and Cheryl Micheletti, who owned the former Tyler Point Grille in Barrington. Blu is from the folks who own the Chelo s restaurants. Finn s Harborside also offers customer docking at its marina. This restaurant opened last year with new owners and a renovated design from the former Harbourside Lobstermania. Dockside dining is more elusive in Narragansett and Galilee, with the many working docks how else to get all that fresh fish? Jim s Dock in Wakefield is the seasonal place for recreational boaters. It s also BYOB and welcomes dogs. gciampa@providencejournal.com (401) 277-7266 On Twitter: @gailciampa The Providence Journal Friday, May 23, 2014 77
