4. SCOPE AND RANGE Assists the senior technician purchasing and distribution in receiving, stock control and distribution within the pharmacy department. Involved in the provision of top-up services and other supply related visits to NHS Borders inpatient units, including BGH wards and departments, community hospitals and mental health units Distribution of pharmaceuticals to a wide range of NHS Borders units and services, including health centres, vaccine services etc Assists technicians with pre-packing and over labelling medicines for stock Assists technicians with aseptic and cytotoxic dispensing To undertake the dispensing of routine POD medicines following departmental procedures after completion of appropriate training programme, under the supervision of pharmacy technicians. 5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES To assist with the receipt, storage and issue of pharmaceutical products in line with departmental procedures. To assist in the stock control of products within the Pharmacy Department, including stock checking and expiry date checking. To undertake the dispensing of medicines where the prescription has been checked and interpreted for dispensing by a pharmacist or technician which includes entering patient prescription data and information onto Ascribe computer system. To carry out stock top-up and other supply related visits to wards, departments and community hospitals within NHS Borders, using agreed stock lists including checking expiries and drug recalls. To assist with medicine audits within the pharmacy department To issue and ready for dispatch pharmaceuticals to all units and services to which BGH Pharmacy provides a service, including BGH, community hospitals, health centres, vaccine service etc. To undertake labelling of medicines within departmental policies, including preparation of pack Downs. To undertake the return, checking and crediting or disposal of medicines returned to the Pharmacy Department in accordance with departmental procedures. To assist in the preparation of aseptically dispensed products including cytotoxics. To amend and update ward/department stock lists as appropriate To participate in the maintenance and filing of files and records.
To ensure adequate supplies of bottles, bags etc in dispensary To assist in answering the hatch and telephones in dispensary To undertake and record environmental checks, eg, temperature checking To ensure all work is appropriately documented and recorded To assemble Resus Emergency boxes To be responsible for the stocking and expiry checking of pharmacy shop To assist in ensuring the safe and secure handling of medicines and documentation To comply with the health & safety requirements of the department as defined by the departmental health & safety policy To train newly appointed ATO s as required. To assist in ensuring the security of the pharmacy department Participate in weekend/holiday/evening/late night rotas as required. Compliance with NHS Borders Policies Assist in the maintenance and update of departmental policies and procedures as appropriate. Participation in the generation of management information in relevant work areas To maintain a positive attitude towards development of post. 6. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS Follows written procedures and top-up lists Working as part of the team uses own initiative with regards to day to day decision making ie. prioritising workload, organising cover for absences to ensure continuity of service Assess and answer or refer incoming queries as appropriate Resolve and investigate medicine supply problems including medical gases and liquid nitrogen. PDP and Appraisals carried out annually by line manager. 8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS Liases with rest of work team Liases with clinical staff on ward/department level to resolve supply issues Liase with and refer to pharmacists and technicians to resolve issues and queries Communicating directly with: Delivery drivers Facilities staff re transport/deliveries etc Staff in community hospitals, health centres Outpatients/carers enquiries Communication will include face to face, telephone, written 9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Moving and handling of pharmacy stock, including unpacking and shelf and box filling with help from pharmacy porter. General keyboard skills Potential exposure to toxic pharmaceutical materials including cytotoxics Unpacking of returned containers from wards and hospital moving and handling and risk o exposure to unknown materials Disposal of expired and returned pharmaceuticals potential exposure to pharmaceuticals

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB In-house training in pharmacy Working knowledge of pharmacy computer programmes pharmacy systems. Knowledge of hospital policies and procedures and a detailed knowledge of pharmacy policies Competent in working within standard operating procedures Ability to work systematically and accurately Good organisational and communication skills Competency in numeracy and literacy skills.
