1. Relationship management to build capacity and create an enabling medical education environment Working in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Training and the Awhina Education Manager Builds strong internal and external partnerships to enhance and enable effective, efficient and impactful medical education at Waitemata DHB and across the region Actively engages with the Medical Council accreditation process to ensure WDHB meets their requirements Engages with the WDHB placement coordinator for the medical school to ensure the best possible learning experience for medical students on placement at WDHB (includes orientation for years 4 & 5) Understands and helps support the work of the various professional colleges that operate within Waitemata DHB and to support the continuum of medical education Practically supports the vision and work of NoRTH whereby each year 1 and 2 House Officer may become a fit for purpose practitioner Works in conjunction with WDHB nursing and allied health leaders to enhance the effectiveness of the work RMOs do alongside other clinical leaders and their teams Liaises with WDHB clinical, operational and service managers in regard to education delivery, assessment and reporting for medical students and RMOs Works with NoRTH, other regional providers, Waitemata DHBs Workforce Development Team and WDHBs Career Development Consultant on career and capacity building initiatives, e-portfolios and career planning Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Medical Education Coordinator Page 2
2. Education programme design and management to support the achievement of fit for purpose medical practitioners Ensures education and learning programmes provided by METU meet MCNZ requirements for PGY1 and PGY2 training, HWNZ funding specification for PGY1/2 and where possible strategically aligned these programmes to NoRTHs vision, the Awhina Health Campus Plan. Works in conjunction with Awhina Research and Innovation to strengthen evidence-based and innovative education and learning initiatives to enhance and strengthen medical education at Waitemata DHB. This includes liaison regarding the production and updating of the RMO handbook Applies a contemporary understanding of medical education theory and best practice principles to influence and strengthen the quality and accessibility of formal and informal learning for medical students and RMOs at Waitemata DHB Develop, deliver, monitor and evaluate high quality education and learning programmes and initiatives that that meet MCNZ requirements that are innovative and practical, assesses competence, meets identified learning needs and employs a blend of learning approaches. Support Intern Supervisors and consultant supervisor in their role. 3. Contribute to the development of skills, simulation training at WDHB and the use of videoconferencing Work with the Waitakere Simulation Centre to develop and enhance the use of videoconferencing links to bridge the gap between North Shore and Waitakere sites Ensure that an effective ACLS and Acute care programme is provided as required by MCNZ in coordination in conjunction with the Simulation Center and the Resuscitation Coordinator. Contribute to the development and coordination of a Skills Unit at WDHB to ensure that skills training is available that maps to MCNZ requirements Understands the links between patient safety and simulation and skills training and quality and can incorporate this in training design and delivery. 4. Influences and co-develops interprofessional education at WDHB Working in conjunction within the Awhina network to weave exposure to other professions into the teaching programme to ensure contact and of the roles of other professional groups Develop training that contributes to the development of team work and collaborative practice at WDHB 5. Evaluation, research and reporting resulting in measurable gain in knowledge, skills and attitudes Contribute to the co-development of Interprofessional education initiatives at WDHB (In relation to programmes delivered through METU) Evaluation practice, consistent with MCNZ accreditation requirements and quality specification attached to HWNZ funding Working with the Director of Clinical Training and the Awhina Education Manager, develops and monitors the implementation of mechanisms and tools for measuring and reporting on the effectiveness of RMO education delivered through METU and the Services at Waitemata DHB Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Medical Education Coordinator Page 4
Gathers, analyses and reports on data that enables Waitemata DHB to achieve effective, efficient and impactful medical student and junior doctor education and learning Ensures that other groups (NoRTH, WDHB Services) provide timely and excellent reports as per commitments and service level agreements. This will involve the provision of educational activity and attendance details to inform the reports for these groups Ensures services are either meeting the performance targets for high quality medical education (as per WDHBs contractual commitments for HWNZ funding) or plans are in place for corrective action; escalate issues as appropriate 6. Fostering an enabling working environment at Waitemata DHB Identifies causes of difficulty for RMOs & medical educators and acts on, refers to others for action or recommends/implements systems-wide initiatives (eg peer-to-peer mentoring) to address In conjunction with the Director Clinical Training work with the services to ensure that RMOs are able to access appropriate education and professional development including protected teaching time In conjunction with NoRTH, ensures appropriate support is provided to international recruits & works alongside the services to support orientation occurring; escalates any issues as appropriate 7. Operational leadership to ensure the effective functioning of METU Ensures the effective functioning of the Medical Education and Training Unit including the development of an annual plan of work, policy overview and budget oversight aligned to MCNZ requirements and the Awhina Health Campus Plan Ensures the RMO intranet site is maintained, provides relevant information and the education programme and resources are upto-date Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Medical Education Coordinator Page 5
