Global management and Governance mba business administration and Honourable leadership mba corporate management (from 2014) mba shipping cooperative doctorate programme (Phd/dba) at claussen-simon Graduate centre at Hsba High-quality education for specialists and executives, applied research and advice round off Hsba s offering. excellent ranking results, the course accreditations by the FIbaa (Foundation for International business administration accreditation) as well as the institutional accreditation by the German council of science and Humanities testify to the high quality of our university. With our scientifi c approach, we would like to mould the students into ethical, cosmopolitan people with strong professional and methodological expertise and soft skills. In the cosmopolitan city of Hamburg with its global orientation, the focus is also on developing students international skills in particular. Hsba is strongly infl uenced by the model of the honourable merchant, whose entrepreneurial dealings lead to success in business and who also assumes social responsibility. accordingly, we have undertaken to observe the six Principles for responsible management education (Prme) of the un, which aim to train responsible future managers.hsba summarises its actions under the motto of excellence commitment Fairness. Our Values. Your success. With the claussen-simon Graduate centre at Hsba, we have created a top-class training tool. The intensive and structured support provided to the doctoral students by the 25 Hsba professors under our dissertation Plus concept as well as the structural additions for the candidates to provide support to each other will raise the quality of the conditions for completing a doctorate hugely compared with other programmes. Prof. Dr. Christoph Niehus, Managing Director of the Claussen-Simon Foundation Hsba stands for the duality of business and science. With this core competency, we fi rst created our dual bachelor s study programmes and then developed the part-time master s programmes. For us, a doctorate is the pinnacle of academic achievement and we are proud to have three experienced and renowned cooperation partners at our side with Jacobs university bremen, andrássy university budapest and edinburgh napier university. Dr. Uve Samuels, CEO of HSBA 3

Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA Profile In business and academia, a Doctor title is seen as a sign of expert excellence that is also associated with qualities such as a high level of motivation, an ability to be enthusiastic about a topic and a large degree of stamina. As a result, successfully completing a doctorate generally has a direct impact on one s professional success. For example, around two thirds of the board members of the DAX 30 companies hold a doctorate, and specialists and executives with a Doctor title are paid 15 to 20% more on average each year than colleagues who do not have a doctorate. In the case of consultants and the self-employed, the title is often the ticket to acquiring new clients. But completing a doctorate is also a huge challenge, in particular when doing so alongside a career beyond the realms of academia. In addition to the academic quality of the doctoral student, the supervision of the project is a central factor in its success. In recognition of this fact, HSBA has joined forces with the Claussen-Simon Foundation to set up the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA, which will provide support and systematic supervision to selected doctoral students as part of cooperative doctorate projects with HSBA partner universities. Profile of the doctorate programme The Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA offers excellent conditions for part-time doctorates. This is thanks in particular to the intensive supervision provided to the doctoral students by HSBA professors as well as to a high-class programme of academic seminars. The academic title is awarded by HSBA s cooperating partner university. Napier University Edinburgh awards a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), while Jacobs University Bremen and Andrássy University Budapest both award a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The topics for doctorates at the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA should be related to business or economics. There is a special focus on taking into account aspects related to business ethics. As the university for business in Hamburg, HSBA also attaches great importance to a good balance between the practical and academic perspectives when defining doctoral topics. Supervision of doctoral students Each doctoral student is allocated two supervisors who oversee the doctorate project. The doctoral students and their supervisors enter into a dissertation agreement at the outset, and reflect on the quality of the collaboration on a monthly basis using an IT-based reporting system. Neither person can see the assessment entered by the other person. However, if the assessments differ considerably from each other or if a low number of points is awarded, the Graduate Centre will provide support to raise productivity again. Target group The study programme is open to graduates with degrees in business and economics who have good or very good grades in their master s or diploma degree. Course organisation The mandatory seminars at the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre are organised on a part-time basis. Additionally, roughly two full-time weeks per year or three weekend modules must be completed at a partner university. The part-time study model means that the doctoral students remain integrated in their companies. Extensive support from the employer in internal company projects or reduced working hours are necessary for successful completion of a doctorate. The expectation is that doctoral students should be granted an average of 20 hours per week to work on their doctoral topic 4

for the duration of their time at the Graduate Centre. Consequently, students must talk with the employer before they start the project about how to combine their doctorate plans with their job. Language The seminars at the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre will be held entirely in English. The seminars are mandatory and are delivered by highly respected speakers. Course start and duration The doctorate programme will generally commence on 1 October of each year and is designed to take three years in total. Alternative start dates are possible in individual cases. Qualification State-certified and internationally recognised Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Both titles entitle recipients to use Dr. before their name (see page 8/9). About the Claussen-Simon Foundation The Claussen-Simon Foundation was set up by the then chairman of the supervisory board and CEO of Beiersdorf AG, Georg W. Claussen, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the company. The Foundation started its work in 1982. Contributions to fund the Foundation were made by members of the founder s family (in particular Ebba Simon) and by Beiersdorf AG. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote science, research, education as well as art and culture. There is a special focus on promoting science and up-and-coming scientists in the Hamburg region. Events organised by the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA take place regularly in the rooms of the Claussen- Simon Foundation. 5

Structure and types of seminars Doctorate programme of the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA Qualifi cation: PhD (Andrássy University Budapest), PhD (Jacobs University Bremen), DBA (Edinburgh Napier University) Three years Supervision of the doctorate project by HSBA professors as well as professors at the partner university Range of high-quality academic and methodological seminars at Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA in Hamburg (part-time) Range of high-quality academic and methodological seminars at the partner university (Andrássy University Budapest, Jacobs University Bremen or Edinburgh Napier University) Internationality Business ethics Network Completing a doctorate at the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA: three pillars Types of seminars In addition to the seminar offerings of the respective partner university, the claussen-simon Graduate centre at Hsba offers three types of seminars held in english. The entire seminar offering is carried out in small groups of no more than 24 participants. national and international experts from academia hold guest lectures exclusively for the group of doctoral students. These are referred to as Expert Seminars. In Moderated Case Discussions, the individual projects and topics are discussed in a structured manner within the group of doctoral students. This form of group work allows for particular project progress. at the Member Presentation, the doctoral students present their interim fi ndings to representatives from academia and from industry. With their excellent reputation, international gearing and tried-andtested applied approach, edinburgh napier university, andrássy university budapest and Jacobs university are perfectly suited to Hsba. Prof. Dr. Goetz Greve, HSBA Vice President Research and International Affairs, Academic Head of the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA 6

Guiding principles Doctorate programme of the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA Across all disciplines, HSBA promotes an international gearing, an education in business ethics and a network for its students and university members. Internationality At Edinburgh Napier University, Andrássy University Budapest and Jacobs University, the doctoral students are part of an international group. The supervising HSBA professors also have a range of varied international experience and backgrounds. The seminars at the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA take place entirely in English, are enhanced with guest lectures from international experts and address topics relating to the globalised economy. Business ethics In its guiding principles, HSBA has committed to observing the values of the honourable merchant and has also undertaken to observe the PRME Principles for Responsible Management Education. For HSBA, its motto of Excellence Commitment Fairness. Our Values. Your Success. forms the basis for sustainable corporate and professional success. Business ethics is taught as an overlapping topic, and thanks to the Dr. Jürgen Meyer Chair of International Business Ethics the topic is also one of HSBA s research focus areas. Doctoral topics related to business ethics are to receive special support, and business ethics aspects will be discussed in the seminars at the Graduate Centre. Network In many cases, a personal and professional network can make an important contribution to overcoming professional challenges. This is why there is a special emphasis on networking at HSBA. The group of doctoral students in Budapest, Edinburgh or Bremen and Hamburg as well as the supervising professors form the basis for the successful development of the doctorate project. But the doctoral students and later graduates also obtain access to the extended network of the university and the Foundation: HSBA has excellent links to its more than 220 partner companies. Further opportunities for making contacts are offered via Hamburg Chamber of Commerce with its roughly 170,000 members and 700 engaged entrepreneurs, as well as the closely affiliated 1,000 members of Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg. The Claussen-Simon Foundation s outstanding links to Hamburg s industry and to the scientific community will also benefit the doctoral students and later graduates. Our objective is to promote science and up-and-coming scientists in the Hamburg region. With the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA, we are consistently pursuing this path and are expanding our Dissertation Plus funding programme, which we have already used successfully to help students on scholarships to continue with doctoral studies. David Athey, Programme Head at the Claussen-Simon Foundation 7

Edinburgh Napier University Partner university of HSBA in the doctorate programme In its doctorate programme, HSBA is cooperating with Edinburgh Napier University, one of Scotland s largest universities with almost 18,000 students from 109 different countries. The university s Business School alone has 4,000 students and covers the entire spectrum of business and economics subjects. Just like HSBA, Napier University greatly values a balance between theory and practise. The Business School at Edinburgh Napier University is one of the region s largest and most modern business schools. Craiglockhart Campus combines historical buildings with futuristic design and is located in the midst of a spacious park on the outskirts of Edinburgh. A cooperative doctorate at HSBA and Napier University results in the internationally recognised title Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Doctoral students take place in the doctorate programme of Napier University at the same time and are required to attend two weeks of tuition per year during the first two years of study. Background: Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) The title DBA is internationally recognised and equivalent to the German Doctor title. Pursuant to a resolution by the KMK [ Kultusministerkonferenz : Germany s Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs] dated September 21, 2001 as amended on May 15, 2008, the title entitles recipients to use Dr. before their name and without any addition. In its database of foreign qualifications (anabin.kmk.org), the KMK says the following about the DBA: This is an applied doctorate programme tailored to the needs of business and industry and is an alternative to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is considerably more research oriented. The target group includes managers in business and industry with professional experience who wish to extend and expand their knowledge and skills by means of applied research for the purpose of the management and running of companies. In cooperation with Edinburgh Napier University, HSBA is one of Germany s first universities to offer this qualification for particularly gifted master s graduates. In the English-speaking world, the DBA has become established alongside the PhD as an equivalent qualification that is equally valued at an international level. Some of the world s best business schools, for example Harvard Business School (USA), IE Business School (Spain), Manchester Business School (UK) or Fudan University School of Management (China) also offer this qualification. 8

Jacobs University Bremen Partner university of HSBA in the doctorate programme as GermanY s leading english-speaking campus university, Jacobs university bremen provides an academic education to students from all over the world. The profi le of the state-recognised private university inaugurated in 2001 is based on the highest standards in research and teaching, interculturality and systematic transdisciplinary collaboration. Its goal is to prepare the graduates as global citizens in the best possible way for responsible tasks in an increasingly globalised working world. Jacobs university offers bachelor s, master s and Phd qualifi - cations for a wide range of engineering, natural science, humanities and social science subjects. roughly 1,400 young people from over 100 different countries currently live and study on the campus, and a good 30% of those are doctoral students. Background: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) a Phd (doctor of Philosophy, or philosophiae doctor in latin) is the classical form of academic research doctorate in the english-speaking world. contrary to what the title suggests, a Phd is a qualifi cation not only in philosophy but also in almost all other subjects; the specifi c subject is usually added to the title using in (e.g. Phd in economics). according to the anabin country overview, a completed Phd testifi es to academic training at the highest level. For a Phd obtained in an eu country, the title dr. can be used without any further additions. doctoral students who complete their cooperative doctorate at Hsba and Jacobs university graduate with a doctor of Philosophy (Phd).

Andrássy University Budapest Partner university of HSBA in the doctorate programme ANDRÁSSY UNIVERSITY BUDAPEST (AUB) was founded in 2001 and is the only completely German-speaking university outside of the Germanspeaking world. AUB is an academic joint venture for Hungary and Europe, and is funded by the Hungarian government, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Austria, the Free State of Bavaria, the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Baden-Württemberg Foundation as well as the Swiss Confederation and the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige. Andrássy University Budapest has a decidedly independent and unmistakeable profile in research and teaching and enriches Budapest as an academic location and the European university landscape as a unique and innovative model project. Interdisciplinarity and a European focus characterise the research-based yet applied master s study programmes in history, political science and diplomacy, legal science and economic science. The four disciplines also work closely together for the structured PhD programme and in the Danube Institute for Interdisciplinary Research. AUB offers its students excellent study conditions and outstanding employability. In small international study teams, intercultural skills are not part of a separate subject on the curriculum but something that the students practise on an everyday basis. The excellent student-lecturer ratio allows for a targeted and fast course of studies. In addition to interactive lectures and seminars, simulations, case studies and classroom experiments establish the necessary link between academic theory and professional practise. market economies and the significance of macroregional strategies in the European Union. The structured study programme includes seminars for the respective discipline (history, law, political science, business and economics), interdisciplinary seminars and key practical academic competencies. Around 25% of AUB students are researching and studying as part of the PhD programme, which is closely integrated in numerous international networks. AUB s interdisciplinary PhD programme centres on regional and European topics ( The future of central Europe in the EU ). The business and economics part of the programme includes current research areas such as the competitiveness of companies, regions and countries, the institutional quality of 10

Benefits of the cooperative doctorate at HSBA For doctoral students and companies Benefits for doctoral students a student who is accepted into the claussen-simon Graduate centre at Hsba has signifi cantly better chances of a qualifi cation and of better-quality work. In particular, the doctoral students benefi t from intensive accompaniment of the doctorate process by a Hsba professor on site who is specialised in the respective topic; a group of doctoral students that meets regularly to exchange views and provide mutual support; contact to national and international experts of high repute who meet with the group of doctoral students to discuss current topics from the fi elds of management science and economics; access to a vibrant network from business and academia. For my doctorate, Hsba with its great service and personal atmosphere was the only choice. I particularly like the fact that the professors are very dedicated and are always there to listen. Thomas Paul, doctoral student at HSBA Benefits for companies supporting the dba or Phd programme is also a sensible investment for employers. as an alternative to a management consultancy fi rm, an employee may examine in detail a strategic issue that is relevant for the success of the company. This allows the doctoral student to generate valuable knowledge for the company and to become an innovation driver. Furthermore, supporting employees doctorate projects is an important component of employer branding in the competition for the best executives. For us as a company, practise-based doctorates are leading to real added value. From process optimisation to the development of new products every company has a suitable topic. Dr. Jochen Hausser, KPMG Accreditations: FIbaa Foundation for International business administration accreditation 11

Completing a doctorate at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics remain integrated in their companies while completing their doctorate and can feed back the findings from their work to academics and to experts on the ground on a continuous basis. Learn theory and methods Discuss and understand Apply in company Reflect theory Principle of focusing on values Success through performance responsibility fairness: HSBA is geared to this overarching motto. In our guiding principles, which are adhered to by all university members and our partner companies, we have agreed to observe the values and the model of the honourable merchant. Issues concerning business ethics form an overlapping topic at the university. Principle of duality HSBA s academic approach follows the basic principle of duality, which combines a challenging theoretical study programme with practical professional experience. Based on this approach, which characterises the bachelor s and master s programmes at HSBA, the doctorate programme at HSBA is also designed as a part-time course. We are convinced that the intermarrying of practical professional experience and the theoretical examination of a business or economic topic leads to the best results possible also and in particular at a high academic level. Our doctoral students thus Principle of internationality Internationality is an essential component of a balanced study programme, particularly in Hamburg, a city that sees itself as the gateway to the world. HSBA thus attaches great importance to the international nature of the programmes, and offers a wide range of study programmes and events in English as well as encouraging study abroad. Principle of networks HSBA maintains close connections with a large number of institutions in Hamburg and around the world. Our more than 220 partner companies are at the core of our strong corporate network, flanked by Verein der Freunde und Förderer der HSBA e.v., the HSBA Alumni Association and our international partner universities. 12

Completing a doctorate at HSBA Basic principles and characteristics Excellent study conditions The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best possible conditions for learning. Our small study groups facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the (compulsory) literature, databases and journals relevant to the courses are available in the HSBA library. Students benefit from the location of HSBA in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall, the Chamber of Commerce and the ZBW [ Deutsche Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften : German National Library of Economics]. Studying in Hamburg As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Germany. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addition, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle construction and is an important location for the health sector and has well-developed basic industry. This mix of economic potential and a good quality of life makes Hamburg one of Europe s most dynamic business regions. With the Inner Alster lake in the centre of the city, countless parks and green spaces, its proximity to two oceans, a large range of diverse leisure activities and excellent shopping, Hamburg is one of the top ten city destinations in Europe and a popular place to live and study. The high quality of life is also due to the fact that Hamburg is one of the safest cities in the world. 13

Funding Course fees and funding possibilities Every year together with HSBA, the Claussen-Simon Foundation awards up to seven places for acceptance into the Graduate Centre. The funding from the Claussen-Simon Foundation funds the supervision of the doctoral students by HSBA professors and the seminars in the Claussen-Simon Graduate Centre at HSBA over a three-year period. Course fees The applicants pay the course fees of the partner university. Depending on the partner university, the course fees vary between EUR 5,000 and EUR 8,500 per year. In addition, there are travel expenses for taking part in the seminar weeks of the partner university. Scholarships and funding programmes Funding is possible from other providers of scholarships (e.g. in the case of a doctoral topic with a link to business ethics). Student loans are also available with special terms and conditions from banks cooperating with HSBA. There are also numerous scholarships for students available from foundations and other institutions. HSBA will be happy to provide advice on these programmes. Assistance from the employer HSBA s doctorate programme is geared to training doctoral students for challenging management tasks in companies. This is attractive to the doctoral students and companies alike, which is why many employers support their employees both in financial terms and by granting additional free time for the doctorate project. 14
