utput channel mdeling in the angular dmain and statistical mdels, smart antennas techniques, multiple-input/multiple-utput cmmunicatins systems, spatial multiplexing, space-time prcessing and cding, multiuser detectin and receiver designs, multiple access and interference management, cperative relaying, pprtunistic cmmunicatins, and multiuser water-filling. This curse prvides cmprehensive and advanced knwledge f bradband wireless cmmunicatin systems. It includes the areas f: Diversity: Time diversity, Space diversity, Frequency diversity Cding and decding Equalizatin Smart antennas techniques Multiuser detectin and receiver designs Aims: This curse aims t: a. Make the student familiar with the theries f infrmatin transmissin in wireless channels. b. Make the student familiar with bradband techniques and their applicatins. c. Enable the student t cnduct analysis and design multiuser detectin algrithms. Relatin t ther curses This curse prvides advanced knwledge f bradband wireless cmmunicatin techniques t enable students t design advanced wireless cmmunicatin systems. It includes the tpics f diversity techniques, multiple access and interference management, cding and decding, equalizatin, antenna arrays, multiple-input/multiple-utput cmmunicatins, spatial multiplexing, space-time prcessing and cding, multiuser detectin, pprtunistic cmmunicatin, and multiuser water-filling. It serves as an excellent basis frm which t cmmence research in the area. Varius aspects f the curse bring students up t date with the very latest develpments in the field, as seen in recent internatinal cnferences and jurnals, and sme f the labratry wrk is designed in the style f an empirical research investigatin. TELE9753 is als well cmplemented by ELEC9754 Cding and Infrmatin Thery, which gives an insight int advanced knwledge f errr cntrl cding technique and theries f infrmatin transmissin mainly at the physical layer. It is recmmended fr future study. Pre-requisites: The minimum pre-requisite fr the curse is TELE3113, Analgue and Digital Cmmunicatins (r equivalent). Knwledge frm TELE4651 and TELE4653 is highly desirable. Assumed knwledge: It is essential that students are familiar with digital cmmunicatins, mdulatin/demdulatin, channel cding/decding, matched filter receiver, cherent and nn cherent detectins, randm signals and prcessing, fading channels, bit errr rate analysis. Students wh are nt cnfident in their knwledge frm TELE9753 Advanced Wireless Cmmunicatins 2
previus digital cmmunicatins curses (especially the tpics mentined) are strngly advised t revise their previus curse materials as quickly as pssible t avid difficulties in this curse. Previus curse cde: The curse replaces previus curse TELE9353 Cellular Mbile Cmmunicatins. Learning utcmes On successful cmpletin yu shuld be able t: 1. Understand f the principles, algrithms and technlgies, including diversity, interference averaging, interference management, successive interference cancellatin, superpsitin mdulatin, etc, used in transmissin infrmatin in wireless mbile channels. 2. Derive expressins fr errr perfrmance and capacity fr varius transmissin schemes cvered in the lectures, such as space-time cding, MRC, OFDM, CDMA. 3. Explain the peratin f example algrithms cvered in lectures, and discuss the effects f varying parameter values within these (water-filling, channel inversin, MMSE, ZF); 4. Apply the principles and technique t cmmunicatin systems design r undertake further research (case study based n allcated pwer, spectrum and users, QS) The curse delivery methds and curse cntent address a number f cre UNSW graduate attributes; these include: a. The capacity fr analytical and critical thinking and fr creative prblem-slving, which is addressed by the tutrial exercises and labratry wrk. b. The ability t engage in independent and reflective learning, which is addressed by tutrial exercises tgether with self-directed study. c. The skills f effective cmmunicatin, which are addressed by the viva-style verbal assessment in the labratry. d. Infrmatin literacy, which is addressed by the hmewrk. Please refer t http://www.ltu.unsw.edu.au/cntent/userdcs/gradattreng.pdf fr mre infrmatin abut graduate attributes. Teaching strategies The curse cnsists f the fllwing elements: lectures and tutrials, and hme wrks. If pssible we will intrduce sme lab sessin based n MATLAB sftware. Lectures TELE9753 Advanced Wireless Cmmunicatins 3
During the lectures, techniques fr the analysis and design f the varius transmit and receiving scheme will be presented. The lectures prvide yu with a fcus n the cre material in the curse, tgether with qualitative, alternative explanatins t aid yur understanding. Varius examples will be given, t enrich the analytical curse cntent. The lectures materials distributed in class will give a basic guide t the curse syllabus, but yu will need t supplement them with additinal reading, f the recmmended text bk and/r ther materials recmmended by the lecturing staff. In particular, yu shuld nt assume that attendance at all lectures (even with a glance r tw thrugh the ntes), n its wn, is sufficient t pass the curse. Hme wrk and Prblem sheets The lectures can nly cver the curse material t a certain depth; yu must read the textbk(s) and reflect n its cntent as preparatin fr the lectures t fully appreciate the curse material. Hme preparatin prvides yu with the backgrund knwledge yu will need. The prblem sheets aim t prvide in-depth quantitative and qualitative understanding f wireless cmmunicatins thery and methds. Tgether with yur attendance at classes, yur self-directed reading, cmpletin f prblems frm the prblem sheet and reflectin n curse materials will frm the basis f yur understanding f this curse. Assessment Hme wrk: 15% Mid-sessin exam: 25% Individual prject: 15% Final examinatin: 45% Hme wrk: The hme wrk tests yur general understanding f the curse materials. It will be given fr sme specific chapters. Grades will be assigned accrding t the understanding f each questin/exercise. This is related t learning utcmes 1, 2, and 3. Mid-sessin examinatin: The mid-sessin examinatin tests yur general understanding f the curse materials, and questins may be drawn frm any curse material up t the end f week 6. It is usually scheduled in Week 7, lecture time. It is clsed-bk test. Grades will be assigned accrding t the understanding f each tpic/questin/technical. This is related t learning utcmes 1 and 2. Individual prject: The prject examinatin tests yur general understanding f a particular technique and its perfrmance in wireless cmmunicatins, which yu have studied in the curse material up t the end f week 7. The prject is usually given in Week 6 r 7, lecture time. Yu need t hand-in befre week 11. Grades will be assigned accrding t the prject reprt, results, discussins, prgrams. This is related t learning utcmes 1, 2, and 3. TELE9753 Advanced Wireless Cmmunicatins 4
Final examinatin: The exam in this curse is a standard clsed-bk 3 hurs written examinatin, cmprising fur-t-six cmpulsry questins. University apprved calculatrs are allwed. The examinatin tests analytical and critical thinking and general understanding f the curse material in a cntrlled fashin. Questins may be drawn frm any aspect f the curse, unless specifically indicated therwise by the lecture staff. Please nte that yu must pass the final exam in rder t pass the curse. This is related t learning utcmes 3, 4 and 5.
