ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES CENTER (ERC) MISSION: The ERC works in collaboration with UW System and UW- Extension, Cooperative Extension county based colleagues to extend the University to local residents so that they may ensure vibrant, sustainable communities with opportunities for growth and development that are equivalent or greater than those of today. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities to make conscious, well-informed decisions about their environments and the social processes involved in caring for those environments. WORKING TITLE: Marketing Communications Specialist (100%) OFFICIAL TITLE: Marketing Specialist title series (title prefix to be determined) GEOGRAPHIC AREAS SERVED: Statewide OFFICE LOCATION: Environmental Resources Center, 445 Henry Mall, Room 202, Madison, Wisconsin TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: This position is a fixed-term terminal/no intent to renew academic staff appointment in Cooperative Extension, a division of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The position is anticipated to begin December 1, 2014 and end December 31, 2016. Reappointment beyond the initial period is dependent upon performance and funding, and is not intended. POSITION PURPOSE: As an academic staff member of the University of Wisconsin-Extension, the Marketing Communications Specialist identifies, develops, and evaluates marketing opportunities, and assists in the design, development and maintenance of promotional materials to reach conservation audiences and increase participation in educational programs that address natural resource management. Responsibilities also include profiling and pinpointing target audiences for programs and marketing materials, direct outreach to target organizations and members, tracking and calculating promotion response rates, and other duties as assigned. A strong understanding of underlying marketing strategy should guide all efforts, along with clearly defined success metrics. This position does not require previous experience/knowledge of agricultural conservation programs, though knowledge of natural resource-related disciplines is a plus. PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Conduct communication needs assessments for the North Central Region Water Network, Conservation Professional Training Program and other Environmental Resources Center programs as appropriate, primarily focused on water resource management and agricultural conservation - Develop communication plans based on needs assessment using an optimal mix of traditional and new media tactics - Create/gather content and develop and distribute e-newsletters (no graphic design required)

- Manage web-based communications - social media platforms and program websites, including basic knowledge of WordPress and other simple content management systems - Use web-based analytic tools including social media trackers and Google Analytics - Represent the North Central Region Water Network and Conservation Professional Training Program at meetings and conferences - Provide leadership for marketing and branding of the North Central Region Water Network, Conservation Professional Training Program and other ERC programs, including national, multi-state, and state outreach and training efforts - Create a plan, provide oversight and assistance for a collaborative outreach/marketing strategy to stakeholder and partner organizations - Work with project staff to develop messaging, ensure appropriate communication outlets, and ensure consistent application of branding across all project communication and products - Develop and implement continuous feedback and improvement strategies for responsibilities associated with this position - Participate in relevant UW-Extension and regional teams - Ensure that programmatic and administrative position responsibilities are conducted in a manner that enables all potential employees and clientele to have equal access to program and facilities OTHER REQUIRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Contribute to the Conservation Professional Training Program and Environmental Resources Center on directionsetting related to communications and marketing - Prepare a personal annual accomplishment report, including a description of work priorities for the coming year - Develop and follow a plan for professional development in the areas of communications, marketing, and natural resource management - Design and use databases for maintaining records of program communications - Perform other responsibilities as indicated by the needs of the Conservation Professional Training Program, the North Central Regional Water Program, and related ERC initiatives - Other responsibilities as delegated WORKING CONDITIONS: - Make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibility and essential job functions - Travel regionally and nationally a few times per year - Work during the evening and on weekends occasionally REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position is accountable to the Environmental Resources Center Water Outreach Program Manager on all matters related to: (a) program performance and job responsibilities, (b) developing effective external working relationships with clientele groups, other agencies, departments and organizations, (c) continuing professional development, (d) reporting and evaluating programs to state and federal governments, as appropriate, (e) vacation, leave of absence, salary and promotion, and (f) administration, office management and performance development. PROGRAM RELATIONSHIPS: This position will work directly with the North Central Region Water Network, Conservation Professional Training Program and related ERC programs. In Wisconsin, this position is administratively located within Cooperative Extension s CNRED program area, but may routinely work with colleagues in CNRED, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANRE), and the UW-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
