Double click on the icon SSH Secure Shell Client or SSH Secure File Transfer. If you cannot see at least one of those icons on the desktop please talk to the lab assistant. b. File Transfer window (copying files from and to the server space): Click on Quick Connect c. The following window will pop up: Type in 134.74.84.6 in the field Host Name Type in your User Id in the filed User Name. (Your User Id is the first letter of your first name, the first letter of your last name and the last 4 digits of your SS#.) Click on Connect In the next pop-up window put in your password and click Ok. Please ask the student assistant in NA 4/221 for the initial password when you log in for the first time. You should change the initial password at this point. Your personal password has to be at least 6 characters long, consisting of at least 2 letters and at least 2 numbers. If you see one of the following windows you are successfully logged in: This window represents a telnet session, e.g. you are logged on to a server and the computer in front of you is a remote terminal. Terminology: - Server: a computer on the network storing files. - Terminal: a device that allows you to communicate with a computer. A remote terminal uses a network to do so. OR This window allows you to transfer files to and from the server space, e.g. you can upload and download files. For your Website you need to create a folder called public_html (all lower case, underscore between the words public and html ) in the main folder of your server space. The main folder in this example is gd6789. 2. How to create a new folder on the server space In the File Transfer Window select where you want the new folder and click on Operation You will see this pop-up window: Click on New Folder Type in the new folder name and hit enter. 3. How to Transfer Files Click on the icon for the File Transfer following File Transfer window: on the tool bar. You will receive the You opened an ftp session, e.g. a file transfer protocol session to copy files from (download) and to (upload) the server space. a. Uploading files (copy files to the server space) File Transfer Window Select the folder (e.g. public_html) you want the files to be copied on the left side of the File Transfer window. Click on the upload arrow looks like this: on the toolbar. You will see a pop-up window that Select the folders and/or files you want to upload in this window and click on Upload. b. Download files (copy files from the server space) File Transfer Window Select the folders or files you want to download on the right side of the File Transfer window. Then click on the download arrow that looks like this: on the toolbar. You will see a pop-up window In the field Look in: select the storage media (Floppy drive, Hard Drive, ) and the folder you want the files to be saved and click on Download. 4. How to access your Website on the Internet After you created the folder public_html you have to upload your Website (HTML files, pictures, movies, sound, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) in this folder. The first page (homepage), which should appear when somebody looks at your Website, has to have the name index.html or index.htm. You have to change the permissions for all uploaded files of your Website. Per default the content of your server space cannot be accessed by anybody else than you. To change the permissions select all uploaded files of your Website in the public_html folder (You will have to do this for all subfolders belonging to your Website) and click on the right mouse button while the mouse pointer is on the highlighted files. You will see a similar window: Click on Properties In the section Permissions of the Properties window you should see the following check marks: If you don t see those check marks click on them and click OK. You have to change the permissions each time you upload files for your Website to give the other Internet users the permission to see your work! Where to download SSH - Go to the URL http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/education/mmcenter/eportfolios.html - Scroll down till you see Click here to download SSH and click on it to copy the application to your computer. - If you have problems installing SSH please read the instructions How to install Secure Shell 3.0 for Windows (SSH) at http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/education/mmcenter/resources.html 6. General Information about the Server Space - You will have 20Mbytes available for your Website(s) and other data. - This server space will be available for one year after graduating from City College. This gives you some time to find a different provider for your Website(s) while you can still use your created Web activities with students in your school.
